We all have busy lives, so its not always easy to plan ahead, but so far we manage.

2.You have a new album coming out in march, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

For this album we have made some changes to our sound in comparison with our previous releases. We started of as a ‘standard‘ thrash band, but through the years we became more influenced of other genres. I think the focus in our music now is to create a more dark and evil atmosphere while in the past it was more about aggression en ‘beer loving‘ thrash madness. One of the biggest changes is that we used subtle synths to create that atmosphere.

3.This is also your first release in 7 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

Well, there was of course corona, but that didn’t stop us. That gave us time to work on this album. We have spend more time on pre-production and fine tuning than we ever did before. It had to sound exactly as we wanted. We went to the same studio where we did all of our previous albums. Oakwood recordings knows how we work and knows what we want.

4.Some of your lyrics cover Occultism themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this topic?

I guess as an adolescent you think anything dark and brutal is cool and kind off reflects your ego at that time. But it was still in a more superficial way I suppose, like you’re already into the heavier genres of metal and idolized cult horror movies, but the meaning behind it didn’t matter much at that time.

That did change over the years, I became more interested in the background of the occult stories and especially if they have a true historical or cultural background (such as “Wild Hunt”). Of course the cult horror movies and books weren’t forgotten, and “Necronomicon” is a homage to that.

As a band, and our evolution to Black Thrash, the music that we created also pronounces a more occult feeling. In a way it’s interest and inspiration perfectly blended in one album.

5.What are some of the other lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

The first album (which we made when we were very young) can lyrically be seen as a punk album. Meaning that we had a lot of pent up aggression, frustrations and hormones that translated in topics of bashing society, politics and church. That, and of course booze and drinking stories. These topics remained, but gradually throughout the second album and latest Ep transitioned more and more into darker occult and historical themes.

6.Origianlly the band was called 'Black Fuel', what was the cause of the name change and also the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Devastation'?

In 2004 we started this band. We played more heavy metal with a setlist consisting of own song and covers of Metallica, Motörhead, Danzig,... After 2 years we decided to play a little bit faster and evolving more towards thrash metal. Our goal was to play as fast and hard as we could and we needed a more suitable name. I think Devastation was perfect for what we were doing. Later we placed an umlaut on the ö to avoid the confusion with the American Devastation.

7.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The artwork was done by Mörtuus art. I don’t know much about him, but he is great artist. Our label has worked with him before and this is what it has become. Most of our songs are our about darkness, sorrow, death and beyond death, so it fits perfect with the music.

8.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We have played some great shows in the past. For me, the most memorable is when we supported Hobbs, angel of death (R.i.p.). I’m a great fan of his work, so getting the change to be support act was a great moment. I can describe our stage performance as aggressive and energetic. We are not the most technical musicians, so it not always easy to stand out between bands that are, but we always try to give the best of ourselves.

9.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?

We have some excellent shows scheduled. The greatest is Huginns awakening fest. We play on Saturday on the same day as Sodom, Tankard, Hellripper and Italian legends Bulldozer! Also some great bands the same day from our home country, Evil Invaders, Schizophrenia, Cobraside and Death fury. Touring has always been hard for us because of our busy lives. We do want to make changes in that.

10.The new album was released on 'Empire Records', how would you compare working with this label to other labels you have been a part of in the past?

Empire records is a great label for bands like us. He puts our release on the maps. That’s what our previous label didn’t do. They helped us financially, but that was all they did. We are still thankfully for that, but Empire records does much more effort. They also believe in what they are doing and they do it with passion for the music.

11.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and thrash metal?

Pretty good, but we‘re still a small band from Belgium and its not easy to become known outside Belgium. We hope this release will change that.

12.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

I think we are still evolving and that‘s a good thing. We always try to set the bar high for ourselves and we aren’t thrash out yet. As long as it’s interesting for us, we’ll keep on going and explore new challenges.

13.What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are currently listening to nowadays?

I myself listen to a lot of different genres from 70s rock to Black metal. In my car today it was Uriah heep and at home it was the Mexican Mortuary. So you can see, enough variety, haha. I listen mainly to 80s speed, thrash and heavy metal at home because that’s what the wife and children tolerate, haha. Our drummer is a professional saxophonist and plays in non metal bands also. Our bassist is a very big Motörhead and rock ‘n roll fan and our vocalist listens a lot of extreme genres. He also plays in the grind core band ‘Loathsome‘.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

First of al, thanks for doing this interview with us. Its good to see that the underground scene and metal in general is still alive and kicking. We hope you like the new album and lets keep the underground alive!

https://youtu.be/Ak8XLDhHkDs
OccultBlackMetalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16453435838224106929noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6886976189405523051.post-8661978677948775432024-03-03T20:31:00.000-08:002024-03-03T20:31:30.322-08:00Malicious/Merciless Storm/Invictus Productions/2023 EP Review

Malicious are a band from Finland that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays a blackened form of death metal and this is a review of their 2023 ep "Merciless Storm" which was released by Invictus Productions.

A very fast and aggressive sound starts off the ep along with a great amount of tremolo picking and blast b eats. Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams while the solos and leads bring in more of a mid 80's to early 90's death metal style and all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them.

At times the music also gets very brutal sounding while a lot of the songs also sound like they could of easily been recorded and released more then 30 years ago. To fulfill his plans, he recruited Davo to play guitar (with whom he played in Disperxión, a punk rock band from Madrid) and me as a bass player. Almost immediately, we started to jam and to compose some tunes. After some time, Alex, from the metalcore band Deymos, joined the project as a singer. In 2023, we released our first EP Sin juicio, el hambre acaba con todo principio (Without judgement, hunger kills every principle) and here we are, about to release our second one.

2.In March you have a new ep coming out, musically how does it differ from your previous release?

Both, the first EP and this one, are two self-produced works. We share our rehearsal room with a friend, el señor Lobo, that give us a hand on the technical level, but he is no producer; there is no artistic input on his side, so all the decisions were made by us. With the recording the first EP, we learned a lot about what we want our band to sound like. None of us are professionals, but we all have a bunch of years of experience playing music in different projects and, after getting a glimpse of what we were capable of, in Erebus we have dared to be more ourselves and to include elements that maybe were not that present in our first reference: from black metal, Scandinavian high energy rock or post-rock. I am also convinced that, although the first EP had a thematic element that condensed the songs, in this case this element is more present both in the sound and in the spirit of the EP.

3.So far lyrically you have covered Franklin's Lost Expedition and Apocalyptic Tales, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?

We really like the thematic albums, and this is just a personal opinion, but from classics like Tommy by The Who to more modern stuff like Wildlife by La Dispute, Leviathan by Mastodon, The Alchemy Index by Thrice, Defeater's discography, even in the crust and sludge realm, Lightbearer albums (a project by the Fall of Efrafa people, which I think went rather unnoticed), I love the concept of an album that revolves around a theme. Either because it follows the adventures of a character, or because it elaborates a unique world throughout the songs, or simply because the tone of the songs takes you to a unique place.

On the first EP, we had the songs composed before we had lyrics or anything, but the thematic element was useful when it came to unifying the artwork, the title, and the lyrics, so we thought it might be interesting to repeat on this second EP.

How the Franklin Expedition theme came about it was all my fault. I studied History at university and I'm very fond of reading about maritime history and the history of the Age of Exploration (Shackelton and Amundsen and all that), so just as we were writing the songs I was reading a book called Erebus by Michael Palin, which just tells the incredible story of this ship that I knew nothing about and I was struck by its tragic ending and the bravery of those involved in the expedition. So, when Alex asked if we wanted to do something thematic for this second one, I proposed this theme and they found it interesting and seemed to like it… so I went all in and immediately after they said maybe, I showed them the painting for the cover, that I´ve already spent hours looking for and located the museum where it is held (evil laugh).

It is true that this is an unusual thematic choice for a hardcore/metal/crust (whatever you wanna called it) album... and it's something that's getting a lot of attention from the media, maybe because it's unusual, they're asking us a lot about it and it might be something that plays in our favor in helping us to find an identity and a place in our small scene.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'La Menäce'?

I could tell you it's because we are fans of French cinema and the 1977 film La Menace with Yves Montand was the great inspiration, bla, bla, bla… but I would be lying to you.

The truth is that it's a name that Luis, our drummer, proposed (I don't know why it came to us with the name in French, since none of us speaks any French) and we liked it. It seems more sophisticated than calling us La Amenaza in Spanish, which sounds more like street punk and such...

In the end, the name is just the name. We like it and people don't seem to dislike it, although everyone pronounces it completely and outrageously wrong, even ourselves!

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?

Mario C. Vaises is the designer of the artwork for this EP and the first one, as well as our logo. He is also a pretty lwell-known frontman in the underground scene in Spain, as he has sung in mythical bands like Another Kind of Hate, El Ego or Khmer. He is currently the vocalist of the best neocrust band in Spain, Svdestada, who this year have released a great album, Candela.

Besides being a singer, Mario is a great artist and has designed all the artwork from a classic painting HMS 'Erebus' passing through the chain of bergs, 1842 by Admiral Richard Brydges Beechey. Apart from the fact that the painting already existed, all the design work, the typography, the watermarks, the interior is all the result of Mario's work, who has always supported us and given us a hand in everything we have needed.

6.has the band done any live shows or open to the idea?

We love playing live and, for a new band without much experience and with some logistical issues (not all our members live in the same city), we have already played a few gigs. It's true that it's not easy to find venues that program this music live, but we try to be part of an underground networks and hopefully we will be getting out on the stage more and more with the help of colleagues to try to play as much as possible.

7.The new ep is going to be released on 3 different labels, can you tell us a little bit more about the labels you are working with on this release?

7 Lamentos Records is our own imprint. As the first EP was self-released, we designed a small logo to make it look more professional and not just the result of four crazy people in a rehearsal room. But I don't rule out releasing something else from any band that we like in the future. Violence in Veins and Hombre Montaña are two small labels form the north of Spain, run by people who have been in the underground scene for a long time and who put out records by bands we love. We proposed to them the idea of participating in this project and they've really got behind us, so we're very happy. We hope to keep this collaboration with them alive in future releases, because La Menäce doesn't end here!

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of extreme metal and crust?

Unbelievable. Just to be doing this interview in English is amazing. It's never happened to me in any musical project I've been involved in before, so we're very happy and very grateful that you're giving us this opportunity for people outside our country to get to know us a little bit more.

9.Are any of the band members currently involved with any other bands or musical projects these days?

Yes, all members are involved in other bands. Luis plays in a surf band called Lee Cantinas and gets asked everyday by half of Madrid musicians to be the drummer in their bands, therefore we get very jealous. Our guitarist, Davo, plays guitar or drums in about two hundred hardcore bands, one of my favorites is an anti-fascist hardcore project called Cantona. They have a couple of EPs out and they sound awesome. Sadly, I am pretty sure they are not playing live anymore, but their releases are great.

Alex, meanwhile, sings in a band called Lluvia Rain, which I've never heard because they haven't recorded anything or played any gigs, but it must be eclectic and a little bit mental… I imagine it's like Prince and Stevie Wonder covers on Meth with a RAT pedal full on.

And I have a solo instrumental post-rock project called Fujiwhara, that I embarked during COVID. I released an EP in 2021 and sometimes I think I would like to release another EP, but it is a lot of work since it´s me by myself spending countless hours turning knobs and mixing the whole thing… It was quite a mental experience because I never have done anything like that, but I´m glad I did it. If you're into soundtracks, Explosions on the Sky, and bass guitar (all the sounds on the EP were produced from an electric bass), is there on Bandcamp so you can listen to it.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Well, I think we have a long way to go and interesting plans ahead of us. I think there is a lot to explore in our music and that the road has just begun for us. I'm very excited about this project.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Within the band, we have quite eclectic musical tastes, but all of us are into bands like Kvertelak, Turbonegro, At the Gates, Svdestada, Tragedy or Iron Reagan. I think that's where the band´s sound is rooted... but each one of us tries to bring their own identity and tastes into the band and that yields something in our sound as a band.

Lately I've been listening to the latest Idles album, they're playing March 2nd in Madrid and I'm really looking forward to seeing them live. I'm also listening a lot to bands like Svalbard, High Vis, Fiddlehead, The Chisel, Drain or Drug Church... who I think are giving a new twist to hardcore and heavy music as we know it and incorporating different sounds and influences. I´ve also want to mention a couple of Spanish bands as Viva Belgrado, screamo post everything from Córdoba and Sklylines, a punk rock band a la Hot Water Music from Madrid who are about to release an album soooo good, I cannot talk enough about it.

Outside the world of hardcore and metal, I'm listening like crazy to Hans Zimmer's Dune soundtrack, which I'm also looking forward to the sequel film (isn't Shai Hulud the best name for a band? Too bad there was already a great band with this name, or I would had pick it for us!) and Brian Eno's Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks, which I think is the best album to listen while being lost in the deep space.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

I would just like to thank you for your time and for the platform you give us to talk about our music. Without fanzines, independent radio stations, indie promoters and the public, our work would be incomplete, because hardcore is nothing without those on the other side of the stage.

Be safe, get in the pit, jump on the back of one of your mates, grab the mic, sing from the bottom of your lungs and be happy. Enjoy the music, we don't know how much longer it will last.

https://www.facebook.com/LaMenaceCrust
OccultBlackMetalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16453435838224106929noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6886976189405523051.post-11281878470097887622024-02-26T19:41:00.000-08:002024-02-26T19:41:06.456-08:00Summoner's Circle/Cult/Black Lion Records/2024 Full Length Review

Summoner's Circle are a band from Knoxville, Tennessee that has had music reviewed before in this zine and on this recording plays a progressive and epic mixture of black, doom and death metal and this is a review of their 2024 album "Cult" which will be released in may by Black Lion Records.

A very dark sounding intro starts off the album while also introducing keyboards and operatic choirs onto the recording before going into a heavier direction. However, we have built on the old material rather than completely reinventing ourselves.

3.This is also your first album in 5 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what was going on during that time frame?

After "The Grand Slam" we had a few gigs and were able to play outside of Germany until Covid came along. The material was largely finished before the pandemic, but we didn't want to release it during the lockdowns. That's why we only went into the studio after Covid and dedicated ourselves to our families and jobs in the meantime.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

We thought it was time to include children's series. Everything else has actually become a bit stale. Maybe we're all just coming to terms with getting older.

As far as writing music is concerned, we're always pushing our own standards upwards. There are elements that always have to be included in a song. That's how we set the framework and feel our way forwards. Whether a song is finished or goes on the album is decided unanimously.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'In Demoni"?

The name has an Italian touch because on the one hand we are influenced by Italian Brutal Death and on the other hand the sound of the name was also an influencing factor. On the other hand, we never thought about it because demons don't care about that haha

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

You know that short sequence from The Simpsons where Bart Skinner puts a burning paper bag outside the door?

This image in combination with the songs and the album title simply represented the perfect symbiosis and symbolism for us. So we simply had to realise it.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stag performance?

Best shows so far were at Nice to eat you, our first show in Poland (shout out to Astarot) or at Metal Frenzy Festival. Our stage performance consists of dancing genitals. Have a look at Youtube :D

8.Do you have any touring or show plans for 2024?

Shows are in the works. We are also happy to accept enquiries

9.The last album was self released while the band has worked with a label in the past, are you open to working with another label again in the future?

We are open to all deals. In the end, it has to be worthwhile for both sides.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of extreme metal?

It can always be more, but we also have to invest more. There are lots of fish in the tank :)

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We are not going to reinvent the wheel. But you will find us in a niche between blast beats, slam, grind, brutal death Asian sounds and stupid intros.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Necrophagist, Cytotoxin, Atheist, Cryptopsy, Suffocation, Cattle Decapitation and many more

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Spread love and be happy

<a href="https://s7728672.sendpul.se/sl/MTg2MzEwODI=/f497364edbb3402f2c5964a711c66e4c7b700s6" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" style="background-color: white; color: #0089bf; font-family: Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; outline: none !important; text-align: center; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/@InDemoniofficial
<a href="https://s7728672.sendpul.se/sl/MTg2MzEwODM=/f497364edbb3402f2c5964a711c66e4c7b700s6" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" style="background-color: white; color: #0089bf; font-family: Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; outline: none !important; text-align: center; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">https://open.spotify.com/intl-pt/album/1svMgKyVpeS9b6vGyPVbvT
<a href="https://s7728672.sendpul.se/sl/MTg2MzEwODQ=/f497364edbb3402f2c5964a711c66e4c7b700s6" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" style="background-color: white; color: #0089bf; font-family: Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; outline: none !important; text-align: center; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">https://indemoni.bandcamp.com/album/stupid-jokes-for-brutal-folks
<a href="https://s7728672.sendpul.se/sl/MTg2MzEwODU=/f497364edbb3402f2c5964a711c66e4c7b700s6" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" style="background-color: white; color: #0089bf; font-family: Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; outline: none !important; text-align: center; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">https://www.facebook.com/InDemoni
<a href="https://s7728672.sendpul.se/sl/MTg2MzEwODY=/f497364edbb3402f2c5964a711c66e4c7b700s6" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" style="background-color: white; color: #0089bf; font-family: Arial, "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; outline: none !important; text-align: center; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">https://indemoni.de/
OccultBlackMetalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16453435838224106929noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6886976189405523051.post-49188342804031377042024-02-18T20:43:00.000-08:002024-02-18T20:43:06.728-08:00Samael/Passage - Live/Napalm Records/2024 Live Album Review

This is a review of a live album from Switzerland's Samael which was released in February, 2024 by Napalm Records which showed them playing their whole 1996 album "Passage" live which also was the first album where they also started bringing in elements of industrial in their black metal style and the album was recorded on their 25 anniversary tour supporting the release.

Live audience reaction starts off the album along with some electronic industrial elements a few seconds later which also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs. Melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing while the vocals are done in more of a black metal style and the keyboards also add in symphonic touches.

All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them while the live versions of the songs use a real drum kit as well as mixing in some programmed drum beats. Influences of doom metal can also be heard in the slower sections of the tracks, percussion can also be heard in certain sections of the album. Spoken word parts and clear vocals can also be heard briefly and the whole album sticks mostly to a slow or mid tempo direction.

On this recording Samael brought all the tracks from "Passage" to the live stage and most of them stay true to the sound that was presented on the original version. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Occultism, Spirituality, Philosophy and Scientific themes.

In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Samael and if you are a fan of this band, you should check out this live album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Rain" "Jupiterian Vibe" "Born Under Saturn" and "A Man In Your Head". 8 out of 10.

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/OfficialSamael" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="border-radius: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #f27d3e; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; outline: 0px !important; text-align: justify; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">FACEBOOK
<p style="background-color: white; border-radius: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px 0px 10px; text-align: justify;">INSTAGRAM
<a href="https://twitter.com/i/flow/login?redirect_after_login=%2Fsamaelofficial" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="background-color: white; border-radius: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #f27d3e; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; outline: 0px !important; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">X

<a href="https://www.samael.info/" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="border-radius: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #f27d3e; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; outline: 0px !important; text-align: justify; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">WEBSITE
OccultBlackMetalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16453435838224106929noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6886976189405523051.post-56450691516904228592024-02-18T19:47:00.000-08:002024-02-18T19:47:31.655-08:00Dionysiaque/Diogonos/I, Voidhanger Records/2024 Full Length Review

Dionysiaque are a band from France that plays a mixture of black, doom and death metal and this is a review of their 2024 album "Diogonos" which will be released in March by I, Voidhanger Records.

A very slow doom metal sound starts off the album while you can also hear all of the musical instruments that are present on the recording.
