Umbra are a solo project from Chile that plays a mixture of black, doom and death metal and this is a review of his 2022 album "Mater" which will b e released in December by Tradegy Productions.
Clean playing starts off the album before going into a very fast direction which also uses a great amount of tremolo picking and brutal blast beats. Vocals are a mixture of death metal growls and black metal screams while the music is also very heavily rooted in the 90's era and dark sounding melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing.
Elements of doom metal can also be heard in the slower sections of the songs while spoken word parts can also be heard briefly. All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them along with the track also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
When synths are utilized they also give the album the atmosphere of a horror movie soundtrack, along with some whispered vocals also being utilized briefly briefly and when guitar solos and leads are introduced on the album they are done in a very dark yet melodic style as well as one of the tracks also being very long and epic in length along with one song also adding some female vocals into the background, clear male vocals are also added on the closing track. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover death worship and doom themes.
In my opinion Umbra is a vey great sounding mixture of black, doom and death metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this solo project. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Grotesque Omnipotent Deity" and "Self-Flagellation Ritual". 8 out of 10.
