Tankist are a band from Estonia that plays an avant garde mixture of black, death and thrash metal and this is a review of their self released 2023 album "Forced Equal".
Avant garde soundscapes start off the album and also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs at times. Clean playing is also added on some of the tracks while all of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them and melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing.
A lot of the guitar riffing is heavily rooted in thrash metal while the vocals also bring in a mixture of black metal screams and death metal growls. Blast beats are also added into t he faster sections of the album along with the album also adding in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they also remain very true to an old school style along with one song also adding in a brief use of synths. At times the vocals also bring in more of an aggressive thrash metal style as well as some of t he faster riffing also adding in a small amount of tremolo picking, clear singing and clean playing can also be heard briefly and one track is an instrumental. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover morbidity, religion, politics, nightmare and misery themes.
In my opinion Tankist are a very great sounding avant garde mixture of black, death and thrash metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Gulag Archipelago" "Commandant's Orders" "Cold Crawler" and "Of Bitter Freedom". 8 out of 10.
