In A Forest Dark Interview

 

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the solo project?

My name is Mário, and before venturing into this project, I was the vocalist for the band Eternal Mourning, with which I released several albums in the early 2000s. The concept for the project IN A FOREST DARK originated in September/October 2022. Just a few months prior, I had made the decision to try my hand at composing some music, and things progressed quite rapidly. That's when I decided to create something more structured and embark on a solo project.

 

2.In June you had released your first full length, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that is presented on the recording?

The musical style presented on the recording is a journey through diverse musical universes. Within the realm of metal, you can find elements of doom, black metal, and a touch of gothic influence. Additionally, I believe listeners may discern echoes of darkwave, dark music, and atmospheric music. The album explores a fusion of these genres, creating a rich and immersive musical experience.

 

3.A lot of your lyrics are inspired by the writings of 'Kazuo Ishgro', can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in his writings?

My interest in the writings of Kazuo Ishiguro is a result of his profound themes and captivating narratives. Ishiguro possesses a unique ability to delve into the depths of human emotions and explore the complexities of identity. His keen exploration of the human condition, addressing the doubts and fears of the soul like few others, aligns with the essence of my project. His writings serve as a perfect inspiration for the thematic direction I aim to pursue in this musical endeavor.

 

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind 'In A Forest Dark'?

The name 'In A Forest Dark' is inspired by Dante Alighieri's 'Inferno.' This project reflects my exploration of existentialist ideas, delving into the depths of individual existence, freedom, and choice. It's also a tool for me to express my creativity on different levels, allowing me to connect with a more genuine part of myself and navigate my artistic journey.

 

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The artwork featured on the album cover consists of the project's initials, intricately crafted onto a coin. This coin, bearing the project's emblem, serves as a symbolic offering to Kharon, for safe passage across the river Styx.

 

6.With this project you record everything by yourself but have experience playing in another band, do you prefer to work solo?

The solo approach provides a different kind of creative freedom, allowing me to explore and express my artistic vision without any constraints. While I value the collaborative experience of being in a band, the autonomy of working solo offers a unique and fulfilling creative process that I appreciate.

 

7.The new album was released on 'WormHoleDeath Records', how did you get in contact with this label?

The collaboration with WormHoleDeath Records came about through an incidental connection. After completing the recording of the “Buried Giant” album, I reached out to a few labels to explore potential partnerships. WormHoleDeath Records showed interest in the project, and we engaged in discussions that eventually led to a collaboration.

 

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black, doom and gothic metal?

The global response to my music has been very positive. Fans of black, doom, and gothic metal have warmly embraced the project, acknowledging its nuanced nature. I'm aware that the music of this project demands a certain level of attention; it's not something you casually listen to while doing household tasks. The intricate layers and thematic depth require a focused and immersive experience. The fact that listeners are engaging with the music on a deeper level is immensely rewarding, and I appreciate the understanding and support from fans across the diverse realms of black, doom, and gothic metal.

 

9.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

As a musician, I envision a continued journey of exploration and evolution. Explore creativity is the most important aspect for myself. I can say that the next album is reaching completion, and I see it as a significant improvement on all fronts. My goal is to create immersive and thought-provoking music that resonates with listeners on a profound level. I look forward to unveiling this new chapter, confident that it will showcase a heightened level of artistry and offer an even more compelling exploration of the themes and sounds that define 'In A Forest Dark.

 

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

My musical influences are diverse. It is hard to pinpoint something that is definite, the tide that guides the waters of creativity. Nevertheless, I would say that artists such as Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, Tiamat, Dead Can Dance, Emperor, Dissection, or Watain have had a significant influence on my musical creations. Regarding what I’m listening to these days, the last album of Kampfar and also the last album of Sylvaine have been on my player for a few months now.

 

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

Beyond my musical pursuits, I'm deeply passionate about various non-musical activities. I find solace and inspiration in oil painting and creating digital images, expressing my creativity visually. Reading is another love of mine, crossing both fiction and science books. Additionally, I enjoy relaxing with compelling TV series, finding inspiration and relaxation in the diverse narratives they offer.
