From Hell are a band from San Francisco, California that plays a mixture of black, death and thrash metal and this is a review of their 2020 album "Rats & Ravens" which was released as a joint effort between Scourge Records and Fastball Music.
A synth orientated intro starts off the album along with a brief use of acoustic guitars before going into a heavier musical direction. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic yet old school style while the riffs also add in a great amount of melody.
Vocals are done in more of a melodic power/thrash metal style while the riffing is also very heavily influenced by the previous mentioned musical genres. Whispers and cinematic soundscapes can also be heard briefly along with all of the musical instruments on the recording also having a very powerful sound to them.
When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats can also be heard along with some of the riffing also mixing in the heaviness of black and death metal. Most of the music is very heavily rooted in the 80's but with a more modern day aggression, a couple of the tracks are also very long and epic in length.
As the album progresses synths and acoustic guitars also make a return in certain sections of the recording and melodic chants can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are a concept album based upon a corpse that wakes up in Hell only to find he must go back to earth, recover his soul that still lives in another body and drag it back to hell.
In my opinion From Hell are a very great sounding mixture of black, death, thrash and power metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "They Come At Night" "The Witch" "The Forest Of the Screaming Trees" and "Am I Dead!". 8 out of 10.
