Cultus Sanguine/Live At Midnight Club/My Kingdom Music/2024 Live Album Review

This  is  the  final  review  of  an  album  from  Italy's  Cultus  Sanguine  which  shows  them  bringing  their  blackened  mixture  of  doom  and  gothic  metal  to  the  live  stage  and  the  album  was  released  in  2024  by  My  Kingdom  Music  and  called  "Live  At  Midnight  Club".

Live  audience  reaction  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  gothic  metal  style  keyboards  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs.  Vocals  are  done  in  more  of  an  angry  shouting  style  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  the  slower  sections  of  the  tracks  also  add  in  elements  of  doom metal.

Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  some  of  the  songs  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.

Black  metal  screams  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  album  along  with  one  song  also  introducing  clean  playing  onto  the  recording,  all  of  the  songs  are  recorded  live  and  all  of  the  tracks  stick  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness,  life,  sorrow  and  depression  themes  and  a  couple  of  tracks  are  also  written  in  Italian.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Cultus  Sanguine  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  dark,  doom  and  gothic  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  live  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Sum  of  All  Fears"  "Dust  once  Alive"  "The  Graves  Forgot  My  Name"  and  "We  Have  no  Mother".  8  out  of  10.

Prime Evil Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new ep?

ANDY: We have begun writing and arranging new music for a 2025 release, and we just finished a video for “Evilution Decree X”

2.In May you released a new ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

ANDY: It is an anniversary re-release of our 2012 EP with 2 added classic anniversary bonus tracks.....all new recordings. The older songs (Kill For Me & Terminal Dementia) evolved over the years into a heavier, nastier delivery. As a matter of fact, these are reminiscent of the insane live versions we used to perform.

MIKE: We’ve never tried writing a specific style. Our writing develops organically, it’s never forced or contrived. We listen to so many different genres of Metal and other types of music, so our writing style includes all that we are fans of and want to hear ourselves.

3.A lot the music was re-recorded tracks, what was the decision behind newer versions of your older songs?

ANDY: There was a logistical problem with getting those tunes on a digital platform. Taking into account the classic songs were recorded over 40 years ago… We took the opportunity to re-recorded them with drummer Antonio Padilla, killer new guitar tracks and a much improved production.

4.The band was broken up for 18 years, what was the cause of the split and also the decision to reform?

ANDY: We originally broke up in 1992…members went onto married life, children, careers etc. The most tenured lineup reformed in 2010 for some classic live shows. One of the major factors in 2010 was Brian Pattinson (R.I.P.) publishing the ‘GLORIOUS TIMES’ pictorial book and prominently featuring Prime Evil….we were completely honored and just waiting for a kick in the ass to reunite.

MIKE: So, both stories are quite more involved than that, and I know that Andy doesn’t want to go there, but fuck it, I will haha. We disbanded in July of 1992 because the previous year, a record contract that we were negotiating fell through when the company went bankrupt. Our friends in Demolition Hammer convinced their label Century Media Records to come out to New York to see us perform. We played a showcase audition for them but afterwards they told us that we were too technical. After we were unable to procure a record deal, our drummer at that time quit for a second time, and we recruited a friend of mine Matt Mayfield (Violent Plague). Shortly after that, our second guitarist quit for the second time as well. That left us a four piece, but we had never sounded tighter. Gene Hoglan of Dark Angel and Chuck Shuldiner of Death tried getting Combat to sign us during that time as well. We had a show at The Marquee in NYC in July of 1992 with Brutal Truth and Incantation. I told the rest of the members that if we don’t get signed at that show, I am disbanding PRIME EVIL. After we got off stage, I asked Combat’s A & R rep if they had any interest in signing us and he told me “No.” I told the rest of the band and that was the end of it at that time. I joined Demolition Hammer a month later, our bassist Mary Ciullo joined Incantation for a bit, and Andy and a former guitarist joined a local band. As for the reformation of PRIME EVIL in 2010… I had been in a car accident in 2006 that permanently straightened my cervical spine (which is supposed to be curved), flattening my spinal cord and causing serious issues. I had very limited use of my arms, hands, and especially fingers. I could not grasp or hold things or play guitar. It took years of procedures, surgeries, therapies, and implants until I could control my hands and fingers for the most part. In 2009 I started playing the bass guitar to build up the strength in my fingers. My fingertips were still very sensitive so I could not touch a normal guitar string because it hurt. After 9 months of rehabbing on the bass guitar, I was finally able to play a nylon string acoustic guitar, and eventually a steel string acoustic guitar. By the winter of 2010 I was finally playing electric guitar again, but I lost my muscle memory and when I tried playing faster, more difficult riffs, my fingers wouldn’t go where I wanted them to. It took me a few more months of practicing, but I finally got my fingers to play what I wanted them to. I studied jazz and theory during this time as well as audio recording, engineering, and production. By the Summer of 2010 I was writing new songs and itching to jam. I was hoping to reform PRIME EVIL with the last line-up of Andy, Mary, and Matt. I contacted Matt first, but he told me he no longer played drums. So, I contacted one of our other drummers Tad Leger (Toxic) but he also said he rarely played drums anymore as he is playing guitar. Next, I got in touch with Brandon from Ripping Corpse, but he was out in Chicago and not interested in coming back to NY. Then, Andy contacted me about the Glorious Times publication and we set up a day to meet. Guess who shows up besides Andy? The former drummer and guitarist who had both quit twice on us. They were the last two fuckers I wanted to ever see, but I put my shit aside and made nice, and we reformed that day. It was no surprise that they both would quit a year later for the third time each.

5.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored over the years with the music?

ANDY: A lot of my compositions deal with the deranged sickness of mankind and many aspects of society. Not preachy but mostly expressing my disgust at our devastating abuse of the planet and each other. I also like to use historic events to illustrate cautionary tales.

6.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Prime Evil'?

ANDY: PRIME EVIL refers to the ultimate evil….mankind; and our penchant for self destruction.

7.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new ep cover?

ANDY: The Prime Evil demon was first drawn by a friend of the band in the early days. We continued to evolve that demon theme throughout the years….with the last version into full functioning form, drawn by Rodney Githens. It loosely represents the ugly faces and deeds of our ancestors.

8.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

ANDY: We were honored to play with an incredible array of influential and upcoming bands. A top show was opening for The Ultimate Revenge 2 tour with DEATH and Dark Angel. Also meeting Sepultura and playing with them on their first show in the U.S. Opening for Morbid Angel twice on the Altars of Madness tour. Playing with Death and Carcass in Buffalo, NY. There were also many early shows with Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Demolition Hammer, Incantation, Suffocation, Ripping Corpse, Immolation, Cynic, Malevolent Creation, Revenant…..all bands were so hungry back then, we were all forces to be reckoned with…great times.

MIKE: I would describe our stage performance as energetic. If we’re not getting into our own music, why would anyone else?

9.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

ANDY: Fingers crossed for modern medicine,,haha….but no plans. Only studio and recording…..right now.

10.The new ep was released on 'CDN Records', how would you compare working with this label to your previous label 'Inferno Records'.?

ANDY: We were planning on just a digital release but CDN stepped up and offered to release it on CD. We are very happy to work with them. Comparatively, they are basically similar in their contracts and offerings. We happen to know our A & R rep Cam who offered us the deal with CDN, so we trust them. We have the highest regards for Fab and INFERNO RECORDS….. he has supported us going back to the 80’s. We are honored to have worked with him.

11.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of extreme metal?

ANDY:We have been very pleased by the strong response and have been fielding messages and inquiries from all over the world. And I see a lot of new names and younger fans also…..We are very happy thus far.

12.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

ANDY: We are currently working with the mindset that it doesn’t matter how many new songs we write…they all have to kick ass and meet our current standards. If 4-5 killer tunes come out then it will be an EP. If things take off…it could be a full length…..quality not quantity. I'm excited to be working….

MIKE: We are just going to continue to write music organically that satisfies us. PRIME EVIL has always been a culmination of the different styles and genres of music that we enjoy and will continue that way. Music is ever changing, but we will always be on the dark side of it.

13.What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are currently listening to nowadays?

ANDY: I have to admit I only listen to songs from 1940 thru 1990…haha I love the old classis from doo wop to Thrash….but don’t really listen to any current music that much.

MIKE: Hahaha. There is so much good new music out, it’s insane. The past year saw new releases by Cannibal Corpse, Malignancy, Immolation, Suffocation, Incantation, Skeletal Remains, Deicide, Job for a Cowboy, and Aborted. New GRID, Sickbay, and Festergore coming out soon as well.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

ANDY: Thanks so much for the interview and support. We will literally thrash to death. Hail and horns!

MIKE: Thank you for the opportunity to promote our music, we greatly appreciate it! \m/\m

Anne O Interview

1. Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

Well currently we are already preparing new songs and of course rehearsing the material for the upcoming concerts we have planned for the presentation of the new work ‘METATRON’.

2. A couple months back you also released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

ANNE O we are still a band oriented towards extreme sounds, very underground sounds. our origins were more street sounds marked by a very metallic influence of hardcore. our first two albums, ‘inside, the solution’ and ‘split cd’, have a more hardcore tinge with a lot of influence of new school hardcore or very metallic post-hardcore and crossover of the late 80's. our last work ‘METATRON’ is a return to our fourth album, ‘Dios no tiene ningún plan maestro para nosotros’, we return to very metallic and quite unhinged sounds with some black/death touches and with guttural and disturbed vocals.

As we mentioned the band has been evolving towards darker and denser sounds... more abysmal and apocalyptic... our musical style is intermingled in the intricacies of the underground, taking progressive, death, experimental and dissonant elements, a music for demanding ears and apart from the majority of the listeners, with its own personality.

3. The band has been around since 1997 but so far has only released 5 albums, can you tell us a little bit more about the gaps in between releases?

We are a band that, as happens with many of the extreme metal bands, at least in Spain, we can't dedicate ourselves professionally to music, and sometimes it has been very difficult for us to combine our day to day work and family life with the dynamics of rehearsals and so on. For this reason, a large part of the compositions of the songs are done at home and we put them together at the venue. Apart from this, there are the different changes in the line-up that the band has undergone over the years.

4. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the new release and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

On a compositional level we play a bit with all that amalgam of ‘underground’ styles and try to enrich that sound by using scales and diminished chords to create more tension and chaos... to make it sound sometimes even unpleasant to the ear. Under this extreme concept we also add melodies and parts that sound more epic, trying to make everything flow in a chaotic/orderly way, adding dissonances and melodies with Angel's guttural and torn vocals.

Our lyrics have always had a very personal and social reading. Angel is the lyricist of the group, he creates the lyrics on subjects that interest or disturb him. The lyrics talk about human behaviour, religion, manipulation, sexual freedom over imposed genitality. In them, you can also find disaffection, love, friendship, tragedies.... In short, we could say that ANNE O's lyrics revolve around human dignity and a ‘free-thinking’ person, with the ability to feel and express their feelings above any socio-political-theological imposition. In ‘METATRÓN’ the thematic of the lyrics talk about how a heterotopia (the ‘truth’ of a minority) can manipulate a majority... maybe that ‘truth’ becomes a hyperstition... that would be something that is a lie but that becomes an absolute truth... by means of this absolute truth they only pretend that you continue being a slave, controlling your time, your sexuality, your feelings... this would have a lot to do with the appearance of monotheisms and how they have imposed on us morals and beliefs by force, far from the essence and instinct of human beings.

5. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Anne O"?

ANNE O is the clinical name (pseudonym) of BERTA PAPPENGEIM, a woman of Austrian origin who achieved renown as a pioneer in the defense of children's and women's rights.

But what really inspired us is that she was the first patient, the ‘0’ patient of psychoanalysis, treated by Freud and Breuer, who managed through hypnosis, ‘of the word’, to alleviate to a great extent the deficiencies that this woman showed in her daily life and in her conscious state, such as blindness, deafness, paralysis of arms and legs, mixture of languages, etc...

6. The new album cover has a lot of masonic, pagan and esoteric symbolism, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?

The concept of the theme of ‘METATRON’ could be summarized in a phrase that we have included in the design: ‘Never ever humiliated by any power’, it belongs to an anonymous poem dedicated to Satan. They manipulate you through fear... fear of hunger, fear of pain, fear of death... they sell you certain religious and esoteric doctrines as absolute truths to overcome those fears transforming you into a docile and submissive lamb, annulling the symbolic capacity of the human being, depriving him of his instinctive and cognitive capacity and depriving him of his capacity to suffer and feel. We are human because we feel without showing emotions, we are automatons, we are a force of flesh without will.

The design is inspired by alchemical and gnostic illustrations, pagan and Judeo-Christian symbology. In the artbook you can find certain magical and masonic symbols... a ouija board appears... and what is called the southern gate, which is a portal made up of columns and the sun. We have also used Abraxas, symbol of the ‘Gnosis’, the devil god who is ‘good and bad’. Christ also appears accompanied by the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene, Baphomet as a symbol of the masculine and feminine duality of the divinity. We have also added characters that have influenced esoteric and exoteric knowledge for better or for worse, we invite you to identify them... The colour of the illustrations and the design is inspired by the light coming through the tinted glass of the stained glass windows of Gothic cathedrals.

7. What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Our live shows have always been loaded with a lot of evil...hahaha. Heavy and dark enveloping sound... trying to make people enjoy, have fun and respect each other. We try to make people bring out everything they have inside and transform themselves together with us into a whole. Audience and band as one being. There has always been a very good vibe at concerts.

There have been great concerts, but perhaps the most remarkable ones are the ones we've played in the north of Spain, where the ‘underground’ feeling is more alive than in the rest of the country. And of course, the concerts in our home city, Valencia.

8. Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

We are open to play as much as we can and be able to present METATRÓN everywhere!!! We want to present the new material live, which is where we feel most comfortable.

For bands that are at our level it's very difficult to get into a big festival. The vast majority of bands pay to play at them, in order to reach more people, using it as a means of promotion. It's not in our mind to pay to play, and if you don't have a promoter like us, it's even more complicated.

We did the presentation concert of METATRÓN last June 8th in the city of Valencia and we have already closed dates for after the summer, which we will reveal in due time.

9. On a worldwide level, how has the reaction been to your music by fans of extreme metal and hardcore?

METATRÓN was released worldwide on March 8th 2024 by Art Gates Records, the diffusion and the channels that the label has at promotional level help us to reach many places.

As for the reactions to this new work are very diverse, from the very good and pleasant, to those who do not quite understand our personal style, which incidentally is not for all ears, ... but from what we know more directly through the numerous media interviews we are attending, people are reacting in a very satisfactory way, even surprising, to the compositional structures of the new songs.

10. Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We are already deep in the composition of new songs, and of course we will continue to explore the darker sides of the underground under our personal compositional vision.

11. What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are listening to nowadays?

If there is something that has characterized us throughout all these years and all the members who have passed through the band, the range of musical styles has been and continues to be very wide, from death metal, primordial black, metal, experimental, heavy metal, progressive, brutal hardcore, stoner, .... and bands as you can imagine the most diverse, I could not tell you any one in particular, all that can bring us something interesting.

12. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

First of all we would like to thank you for the interest shown towards the band and the opportunity for people to get to know us a little bit more through this interview.

And finally we invite you to know our music, you can find it through ART GATES RECORDS and in all the platforms and social networks of ANNE O!!!!

Sociasylum Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new ep?

Since the release of our latest EP we toured Europe for 3 weeks alongside our Finnish friends, Rats Will Feast, and we had a great time playing in a lot of new places and visiting countries we haven’t been to before.

At the same time we haven’t slowed down and have been continuing writing songs for our upcoming LP, so far we have around 12, more or less, ready tracks. We will continue fine-tuning them and maybe will write a few more songs. Currently our aim is to start album pre-production this fall.

2.In March you had released a new ep, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Looking back at the EP, it feels like those songs serve as a bridge towards the more complete and better defined album or at least this is what I am telling myself. The EP songs were written mostly more than 2 years ago already with the thought of having more repetitive parts and longer, more thought out song structure. Harmony of Discordance EP songs came out sounding somewhat more metal influenced than our previous stuff, but as I don’t want to write the same album or song twice, each next release will continue the evolution of whatever Sociasylum will end up sounding like.

3.This is also your first release since 2018, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

Since the release of our last LP “Crossroads” we were focusing on playing as many shows as possible and did two European tours with different friends from around the globe. Up until the end of 2019 when our then singer, Heindrig, decided to quit the band and move to France. Losing our vocalist slowed us somewhat down and then while we looked for our new frontman, we decided to try to take things slower and focus more on songwriting, which wasn’t very productive at that time. Then eventually Covid period and lockdowns started and while a lot of people wrote full albums during the downtime we managed to only squeeze out 4 songs, out of which 3 made it to our EP some years later. So in conclusion taking things slower made us too relaxed and eventually all of us were sidetracked by being involved in multiple different musical projects, but now it’s quality over quantity approach and we are working towards making sure that the upcoming album is the best representation of what Sociasylum currently is.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

Our lyrical topics have always focused on the negative and sad aspects of humanity or about our personal struggles involved with either personal stuff or different events occurring around us.

Over the years I think that I have progressed enough that I can finally write the songs I always wanted to write for Sociasylum and play them with ease, at least this more related to the upcoming full length release.

Lyrically it’s too early to know where we will go next with the album.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Sociasylum'?

The name is put together by combining two words, social and asylum, into one word.

The founding members had their own definition for the name, but I personally like to define the name as a safe haven within our society where everyone can belong and feel welcomed enough to unleash their inner energy.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?

With the EP we didn’t have a concrete vision for the artwork and we decided to send songs and lyrics with highlighted keywords and some vague ideas to Erik Hallik to get inspired and draw whatever comes to his mind.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

There've been a lot of fantastic shows, most of the funnest shows happen in our hometown at our DIY punk venue Ülase12, it’s always a blast to play there. Definitely one of the highlights that comes to mind is when we played Tallinn Music Week in 2021 to a fully packed venue and everything felt right. Also shows in Tallinn with Hexis have always been very memorable in all the different venues.

8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

We just recently finished our 3-week long European tour and have been planning to focus on finalizing our next full-lenght. Once the new album is on its way to be released we will definitely plan some followup tours.

9.Currently you are  unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

We have been trying to find a label for quite some time, have pitched our EP to a lot of different labels, but EPs aren’t as attractive enough as full-length releases or maybe we were pitching it to the wrong labels at the wrong time, who knows. Will definitely look for a label to have our upcoming full-length album released and hopefully we find someone that we can have a great cooperation with.

10.On  a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal and hardcore?

Sometimes it feels like we are too much in-between different genres and we aren’t purely one specific genre to be liked by all the fans of one specific style of music. I think throughout all our releases we have been too punk for metalheads and too metal for punks.

11.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Musically I feel like I am finally at my comfort level, where I am able to write songs at the needed level that I have been trying to reach all these years. Which means writing blackened hardcore songs and mixing them with grindcore sprinkled with all sorts of modern hardcore influences and dosed heavily with d-beat.

Currently all the new songs have been heavily influenced mostly by the recent releases from Wormrot, Full of Hell, Harm’s Way, Terror, Dying Fetus, Year of the Knife and Implore, all of these bands have released recently some of their strongest releases.

Regarding when the full length will be released, it’s too early to tell, not before the second half of 2025.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are currently listening to nowadays?

We are trying to keep our musical palates very variable and we consume everything from hip-hop to black metal and from techno to grindcore.

Personally, I have been again stuck listening to the latest releases from Full of Hell and Wormot.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Yeah, don’t become a people pleaser-workaholic and life will be more beautiful and SKA should be banned :D

Defacement/Duality/Unorthodox Emanations/Avantgarde Music/2024 Full Length Review

Defacement  are  a  band  from  the  Netherlands  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  experimental  and  blackened  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2024  album  "Duality"  which  will b e  released  on  July  26th  as  a  joint  effort  between  Unorthodox  Emanations  and  Avantgarde  Music.

A  very  dark  and  apocalyptic  sounding  into  starts  off  the  album  while  also  adding  in  some  electronic  music  sounds  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  When  the  music  speeds  up a   great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  brutal  blast  beats  can be  heard  and  the  vocals  add  in  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  cavernous  death  metal  growls.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  dissonant  sounding  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  good  amount  of  melody  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style.

The  album  also  has  its  experimental  moments  along  with  an  interlude  also  being  added  into  between  all  of  the  tracks  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  unfathomable,  shadowy  corners  of  human  existence.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Defacement  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental  and  blackened  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Burden"  and  "Duality".  8  out  of  10.

Goresoerd Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

Rasmus: We’ve already had a couple of shows promoting the new album.

Stig: Yes, as Rasmus said, we are promoting our album as we can and have played some great shows. First was our album presentation show and a show at Estonia’s biggest metal festival Hard Rock Laager 2024 where the headliners were Hypocrisy, Carpathian Forest, Bathuska.

2.Im May you have a new album coming out, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Rasmus: “Inkvisiitor” is definitely one of the most aggressive albums we’ve done. We really put time and effort into the writing process and production and I think this can be heard.

Stig: People are telling us that new album is more dynamic, complex, and faster than previous albums. I agree! Also, I can add that the songs are bit longer than in other albums and of course production is much better than previously. But of course, old albums have their own sound and story as well.

3.This is also your first album in 5 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

Rasmus: We pretty much we’re writing this album the whole time. We put out some singles during that period to test out different approaches for the new album so we’d know what works and what doesn’t before the actual album. Also had the chance to play quite a few shows, definitely mentionable are opening up for Megadeth, Kreator and Brujeria in Tallinn last year.

Stig: In addition we started writing new material right after we released (2019) “Kain” album and had great plans for gigs, but then came corona virus and the whole world went lockdown. Then we just played some gigs, wrote new material and released singles. We also released a full-length “corona time” live stream video, which can be found on Youtube.

And right after we planned to start with album demo recordings, Russian invasion to Ukraine happened. As we live next to Russia you always must think what is going on… are we going to war or …… So time went by but finally in the beginning of 2023 we started recording.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the new album and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

Stig: Lyrical topics are mostly dark themes, inquisition, war, mysticism. Songwriting depends about mood, you know. Our usual song writing progress is starting with someone’s demo and then our vocalist listens to it and gives his opinion. When he is not very satisfied then we skip this demo, when he agrees, then we go more in depth with the parts and start to play and jam it together in the rehearsal room. Previously we made demos and recorded the song in the studio for the first time. Then after album release, we started to learn and play it together, but we found that some songs do not work in “live".

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

Eero: I always wanted to paint something by myself for the band. I have tried many times previously but now it finally came to life. Since I write all the lyrics also for the songs, some visualisations started happening in my head for the album. When we wrote the song “Inkvisiitor” (inquisitor), I thought about a character who does evil things in order to feel happy about itself. As soon as we decided that this will be the title track, I had this specific picture in my head that is now the cover art.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Rasmus: For me personally the best of the best has been “Inkvisiitor” album release show in May so far. There was a different kind of energy in the room that set things on fire. I can also remember a super small show we played in some cellar in Slovakia in 2016. That was just pure chaos and fun.

Stig: There are lot of great memories. Tuska Festival in Finland, Devilstone Open Air in Lithuania and the biggest festival where we have played was Rockfest in Finland 2019. Of course, this Slovakian cellar was also memorable.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

Rasmus: Yes, we have shows planned in Estonia and also a tour in Finland for Autumn.

8.The new album was self released while the band has worked with a label in the past, are you open to working with another label again in the future?

Rasmus: We are always open for cooperations.

Stig: Yes, we are open for cooperations. Self-releasing does not meant that we don’t cooperate with record labels. For example, Nailboard Records (Estonia’s only metal music label) released our special edition vinyl and in Finland Inverese Records is helping us to promote the album over there.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your newer music by fans of extreme metal?

Rasmus: So far all the reactions and reviews we’ve gotten are really good. People really dig this kind of aggressive and fast paced metal music. And the vocals being in Estonian doesn’t also seem to be an issue.

Stig: Previously we’ve often got feedback that the music is very cool but we (listener) can’t understand what the songs are about. We have English translations for lyrics added in the album booklets since the album "Asülum" came out in 2013. For me, the words of an extreme metal band can be in any language. I like Norwegian, Swedish and French bands.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Rasmus: We’ve always mixed and matched different elements of different metal genres. So you never know.

Stig: Yes, and we don't want to repeat ourselves, and we add new elements to every new album.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are listening to nowadays?

Rasmus: If somebody sees my liked songs on Spotify they might think I’m schizophrenic. Let’s just say I like all music in general that is well written for my taste.

Stig: We are listening almost all musical styles starting from pop, hip-hop and finishing with black, extreme or brutal death metal. Our singer also listens to classical music. Some bands what I like most now are Akhlys, Vitriol, Pain, Blues Pills.

12.Does Occultism play any role in your music?

Rasmus: Only in some of the lyrics.

Stig: Nowadays you can find occultism everywhere. ;)

13.Before we wrap up this interview do you have any final words or  thoughts?

Rasmus: If you like our music just keep listening and sharing it. We also have merch available at our Bandcamp page, so be sure to check that also. Cheers!

Stig: Yes, and don't hesitate to contact us if you need translations for the words. Or better yet, buy the album where the words are included. ;) I hope to see and meet new fans at concerts in the future. Let's keep the extreme metal alive!
