Necronomicon/Unus/Season Of Mist/2019 CD Review

  Necronomicon  are  a  band  from  Montreal,  Quebec,  Canada  that  plays  a  symphonic  form  of  blackened  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of   their  2019  album  "Unus"  which  was  released  by  Season  Of  Mist.

  Symphonic  and  orchestra  sounds  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  death  metal  growls  and  the  riffs  also  bring  in  some  melodies.

  Elements  of  black  metal  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Grim  screams  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  music  as  well  as  some  tremolo  picking  also  being  added  into  some  of  the  faster  sections  of  the  tracks.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  as  well  as  the  music  also  having  its  brutal  moments.  One  track  also  introduces  spoken  word  parts  and  acoustic  guitars  onto  the  recording  and  they  also  bring  in  a  couple  of  brief  symphonic  interludes  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction  on  the  following  song.,  operatic  female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  middle  eastern  folk  instruments  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Magick,  Mythology  and  Death  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Necronomicon  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  symphonic  blackened  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "From  Ashes  Into  Flesh"  "The  Thousand  Masks"  and  "Vox  Draconis".  8/5  out  of  10.

Darkified/Cthulu Riseth - The Complete Works Of Darkified/Nuclear War Now! Productions/Dawnbreed Records/2019 Compilation Album Review

  Darkified  where  a  band  from  Sweden  that  played  a  very  atmospheric  form  of blackened  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  compilation  album  "Cthulu  Riseth  -  The  Complete  Works  of  Darkified"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Nuclear  War  Now!  Productions  and  Dawnbreed  Records  and  consists  of  their  1991  demo  "Dark"  and  1993  ep  "Sleep  Forever...".

  Keyboards  start  off  the  compilation  and  also  bring  in  the  atmosphere  of  a  horror  movie  soundtrack  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music.  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melody  and  during  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.

  Vocals  bring  in  a  decent  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls  along  with  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  A  lot  of  the  music  also  shows  a  great  amount  of  influences  from  the  black  and  death  metal  styles  styles  from  Sweden  in  the  early  90's.

  At  times  the  vocals  also  sound  very  tortured  sounding  as  well  as  some  spoken  word  parts  also  bringing  used  briefly  and  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  a  ritualistic  feeling  and  on  the  second  recording  the  music  expands  on  the  death  metal  elements  that  where  present  on  the  demo  along  with  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  classical  guitars.  The  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  writings  of  H.P  Lovecraft,  Cthulu  Mythos,  Horror  and  Death  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Darkified  where  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  blackened  death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Howlings  From  The  Darkness"  and  "The  Forgotten  City".  8  out  of  10.

In Obscurity Revealed/Glorious Impurity/Blood Harvest Records/2019 CD Review

  In  Obscurity  Revealed  are  a  band  from  Mexico  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  blackened  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "Glorious  Impurity"  which  will  be  released  in  December  by  Blood  Harvest  Records.

   A  very  dark,  heavy  and  brutal  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  along  with  the  riffing  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  evil  sounding  melodies.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  old  school  yet  chaotic  style.

  The  vocals  bring  in a   great  amount  of  blackened  screams  while  the  music  also  mixes  in  a  great  amount  of  death  metal  elements  as  well  as  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  90's  influences.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,

  Tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  faster  riffing  as  well  as  one  track  also  mixing  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  into  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music and  a  lot  of  the  songs  also  sound  like  they  could  of  easily  been  recorded  and  released  more  than  20  years  ago.  The  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  Death,  Chaos  and  Occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  In  Obscurity  Revealed  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackened  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Coven  Maleficia"  "Thy  Temple  Fire"  "Pestilent  Breath"  and  "Closing  Victory".  8  out  of  10.

Swampbeast/Void Terror/Holocaust Of Terrestrial Empires/Me Saco Un Ojo/2019 EP Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between  California's  Swampbeast  and  Kentucky's  Void  Terror  called  'Holocaust  Of  Terrestrial  Empires"  which  was  released  by  Me  Saco  un  Ojo  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Swampbeast  a  band  that  plays  a  cavernous  mixture  of  death  metal  and  grindcore.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  distorted  amp  sound  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  brutal  grindcore  direction  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  cavernous  sounding  death  metal  screams  while  screams  are  also  utilized  at  times,  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  their  side  of  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  at  times  as  well  as  always  sticking  to  a  heavier  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  horror  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Swampbeast  are  a  very  great  sounding  cavernous  mixture  of  death  metal  and  grindcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Chant  Of  Bolotnik".

  Next  up  is  Void  Terror  a  band  that  plays  a  blackened  form  of  death  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  dark,  heavy  and  melodic  sound  while  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  guttural  yet  cavernous  sounding  death  metal  growls.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  brutal  blast  beats  and  black  metal  elements  can  also  be  heard

  The  music  also  adds  in  a  decent  mixture  of  both  old  school  and  modern  influences  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  chaotic  style.  Throughout  their  side  of  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  when  synths  are  utilized  they  also  give  the  music  more  of  a  sci  fi  atmosphere  and  a  touch  of  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  music.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  horror  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Void  Terror  are  a  very  great  sounding  blackened  death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Second  Death".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  black,  death  metal  and  grindcore.  8  out  of  10.

  Xantam  are  a  solo  project  from  Oceanside,  California  that  plays  a  blackened  from  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2019  ep  "Altered  State"  which  will  be  released  in  December  by  Blood  Harvest  Records.

  Epic  sounding  synths  start  off  the  ep  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length. When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  along  with  the  vocals  bringing  in  a  mixture  of  death  metal  growls  and  black  metal  screams,

  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  along  with  the  songs  also adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts. When  guitar  solos  and leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  and  melodic  style  while  the  music  also  gets  very  brutal  sounding  at  times.

  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  melodic  yet  ritualistic  chants  and  spoken  word  parts,  synths  also  make  a  return  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording and  the  ep  also  closes  with  an  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  dark  side  of  the  human  mind,  existence,  anti  religion  and  fictional  story  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Xantam  are  a  very  great  sounding  blackened  death  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Altered  State".  8  out  of  10.

  Ritualistic  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  black  metal  elements  can  be  heard  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  guttural  death  metal  growls.

  Xoth  are  a  band  from  Seattle,  Washington  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays   a  blackened  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2019  album  "Interdimensional  Invocations".

  A  very  heavy  and  brutal  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  introducing  melodic  guitar  leads  onto  the  recording.  When t he  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  vocals  are  a  mixture  of  death  metal  growls  and  black  metal  screams.

  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  while  the  songs  also  show  some  influences  of  thrash  and  traditional  metal  as  well  as  the  album  being  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  old  school  style  but  also  keeping  it  very  modern  at  the  same  time.

  Shouting  style  vocals  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording    as  well as  some  synths  being  used  briefly  on  a  couple  of  the  tracks and  the  musicians  also  demonstrate  a  great  amount  of  talent  and  skill,  some  of t he  faster  riffing  also  adds  in  some  tremolo  picking.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  for being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  science  fiction,  ancient  mysteries,  emerging  catastrophes  and  social  commentary  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Xoth  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackened  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Casting  The  Sigil"  "Back  To  The  Jungle"  and  "The  Ghost  Hand  Of  God".  8  out  of  10.
