Tchornobog/Abyssal/Lupus Lounge/2022 SPlit Album Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Portland,  Oregon's  Tchornobog  and  United  Kingdom's  Abtssal  which  will  be  released  on  November  25th  by  Lupus  Lounge  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Tchornobog  a  band  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  an  avant  garde  mixture  of  black,  doom  and  death  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  dark  soundscapes  and  vomiting  while  saxophones  can  also b e  heard  briefly  before  going  into a   heavier  direction.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  v ery  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  vocals  being  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls.

  Elements  of  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  song  which  is  also  over  24  minutes  in  length.  Avant  garde  and  dissonant  structures  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  melody  at  times  as  well  as  some  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  also  being  utilized  when  the  track  finally  speeds  up.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  negativity  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  track  from  Tchornobog  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  avant g arde  black,  doom  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.

  Next  up  is  Abyssal  a  band  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  doom  and  death  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  atmospheric  sounding  synths  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  Elements  of  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  song  which  is  over  23  minutes  in  length  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  death  metal  growls  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  track  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats.

  Elements  of  black  metal  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  song  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  dark  style  when  they  are  utilized,  clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  oppression  and  decay  themes.  

  In  my  opinion  Abyssal  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black,  doom  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  black,  doom  and  death  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Tchornobog/Self Titled/I, Voidhanger Records/2017 CD Review

  Tchornobog  are  an  international  duo  from  the  United  States  and  Iceland  that  plays  an  avant  garde  mixture  of  black, death  and funeral  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2017  album  which  will  be  released  on  July  28th  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records.

  Death  metal  growls  and  brutal  riffs  start  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats can  be  heard  along  with  the  solos and  leads  also  bringing  in  a  chaotic  style  of  extreme  metal  and  the  music  also  has a   great  amount  of  black  metal  influences.

  Black  metal  screams  can  also be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  while  the  slower  riffing is  very  heavily  rooted  in  funeral  doom  metal  and  nature  orientated  soundscapes  can also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  some  avant  garde  elements  and  most  of  the  tracks are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  as  the  album  progresses  clean  playing,  saxophones,  trumpets, bells,  cellos,  and  Grand  piano  are  added  onto  the  recording  while  the  solos  become  more  melodic  and  also  add  in  a  touch  of  post  metal  and  spoken  word  parts  are  also  used  briefly. 


  Tchornobog  plays  a  musical  style  that mixes  black,  death  and  funeral  doom  metal  together  with  an  avant  garde  touch  to  create  a  sound  of  their own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Slavic  Mythology,  metaphors of  religion,  psychological  disorder  and  auditory  hallucinations  of  the  human  animal.

  In  my  opinion  Tchornobog  are  a  very  great  sounding  avant  garde  mixture  of  black,  death,  and  funeral  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  duo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Vomiting  Tchornobog"  and  "Non  Existence's  Warmth".  8  out  of  10.
