Acheron/Satanic Victory/Vic Records/2022 EP Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  an  older  recording  from  U.S.A's  Acheron  which  showed  more  of  an  earlier  style  of  blackened  death  metal  with  some  touches  of  doom/death  metal  and  the  ep  was  originally  released  in  1994  and  called  "Satanic  Victory"  and  we  be  re-issued  in  2022  by  Vic  Records  with  a  couple  of  bonus  tracks  from  their  1992  ep  "Alla  Xul".

  A  very  slow,  dark  and  heavy  doom  metal  influenced  sound  starts  off  the  ep  while  the  vocals  are mostly  death  metal  growls.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  and  black  metal  screams  can  also be  heard  at  times.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  early  90's  death  metal  style  while  some  of  the  riffing  also  shows  an  influence  of  80's  metal.  When  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  and  most  of  the  music  sticks  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction.

  On  this  recording  Acheron  stuck  to  mostly  a  blackened  doom/death  metal  style  as  well s  mixing  in  a  more  satanic  atmosphere.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Demonology,  Anti  Christianity  and  Necronomicon  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  was  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Acheron  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  satanic  black,  doom  and  death   metal,  you  should  check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Seven  Deadly  Sins"  "Power  of  Hell"  and  "All  Xul":.  8  out  of  10.

Funeral Chant/Dawn Of Annihilation/Carbonized Records/2021 Full Length Review

 

  Funeral  Chant  are  a  band  from  Oakland,  California  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  death  and  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Dawn  of  Annihilation"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Carbonized  Records.

  A  very  fast  and  brutal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  blackened  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later.  Elements  of  old  school  death  emtal  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  an  early  Morbid  Angel  influenced  style  and  most  of  the  music  is  also  heavily  rooted  in  the  mid  80's  to  early  90's  era.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  thrash  metal  influences.  Dark  sounding  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  the  whole  album  also  sticks  to  a  heavier  musical  direction.

  Funeral  Chant  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  black,  death  and  thrash  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  darkness,  evil,  occultism  and  demonology  themes.    

  In  my  opinion  Funeral  Chant  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black,  death  and  thrash  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Terrorspawn"  "Lucifuge  Domain"  and  "Serpent  Pact".  8  out  of  10.

Snakeblade/The Curse/Moonshooter Productions/2021 Full Length Review

 

  Snakeblade  are  a  solo  project  from  Vancouver,  B.C,  Canada  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  blackened  form  of  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2021  album  "The  Curse"  which  was  released  by  Moonshooter  Productions.

  A  keyboard  orientated  intro  starts  off  the  album  while  also  adding  in  some  orchestra  structures  which  later  mix  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Vocals  are  mostly  aggressive  sounding  screams  which  also  add  in  a  blackened  style  closer  to  the  first  wave  era.  Elements  of  thrash  metal  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  old  school  and  modern  influences.

  Tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  faster  riffing  along  with  some  growls  also  being  utilized  briefly.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  a  couple  of  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  small  amount  of  classical  and  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  and  one  of  the  songs  is  also  an  instrumental,  one  track  also  introduces  clean  vocals  onto  the  album.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  inspired  by  George  R.R  Martin's  "Games  of  Thrones"  series.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Snakeblade  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackened  thrash  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Rotten  Souls"  "The  Red  Mage's  Seduction"  and  "Exile:  Outlaw...  The  Essence".  8  out  of  10.

  Mentor  are  a  band  from  Poland  that h as  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  thrash  metal  and  hardcore  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Wolves,  Wraiths  and  Witches"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Pagan  Records.

  A  very  dark  and  heavy  thrash  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Vocals a re  a  mixture  of  blackened  metal  screams  and  hardcore  style  shouts  along  with  the  music  also  capturing  the  raw  aggression  of  punk  rock .

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  music  also  adds  in  a  good  mixture  of  both  old  school  and  modern  influences.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  also  bring  in  more  of  an  80's  retro  metal  punk  style  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  death  metal  growls  onto  the  recording,  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also be  heard  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  clean  vocals  can  also  be  heard.

Strings Of Distorted Doom/Doom Trials/2021 Full Length Review

 

  Strings  Of  Distorted  Doom  are  a  band  from  New  York  that  plays  a  blackened  form  of  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2021  album  "Doom  Trials".

  Rain  and  thunder  sounds  start  off  the  album  while  ritualistic  spoken  word  parts  and  guitar  sounds  are  added  into  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  a  heavier  doom  metal  direction.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style.

  Growls  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  fast  playing  and  blast  beats  as  well  as  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  at  times.

  Ritualistic  soundscapes,  synths  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  a  couple  of  tracks  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  along  with  the  album  also  closing  with  a  cover  of  Venom's  "Witching  Hour".  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  occultism,  Horror  and  Darkness  themes  along  with  one  track  also  being  written  in  German.

Kreatonist/Dans L' Interminable/I, Voidhanger Records/2021 Full Length Review

 

  Kreatonist  is  a  solo  project  form  Belgium  that  plays  a  mixture  of  atmospheric  black,   doom, post  metal, avant  garde  and  ambient  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2021  album  "Dans  L'  Interminable"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records.

  Ambient  style  synths  and  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  post  rock  direction  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Elements  of  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  and  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  and  the  music  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments.

  Psychedelic  touches  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.  The  music  also  has  its  avant  garde  moments  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard.

  One  track  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments  as  well  as  some  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing,  some  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  based  upon  the  poetry  of  Paul  Verlaine  a  poet  from  the  19th  century  Paris,  France's  Fin  de  Siecel  period. 

  In  my  opinion  Kreationist  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  atmospheric  black,  doom,  post  metal,  avant  garde  and  ambient  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Mandoline"  "Walcourt"  "La  Bonne  Chanson  XI"  and  "Dans  L'  Interminable".  8  out  of  10.

  A  very  slow  and  heavy  doom  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  music  also  being  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  early  90's  era  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Destructo  are  a  band  from  the  Netherlands  that  plays  a  blackened  form  of  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Demonic  Possession"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Dying  Victims  Productions.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  a  small  amount  of  melody  is  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  yet  old  school  style  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  thrash  and  first  wave  black  emtal  elements.

  Vocals  are  done  in  mostly  an  80's  growling  style  that  is  close  to  the  earlier  days  of  death  metal  while  black  metal  screams  are  also  utilized  at  times.  D  beats  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  drums  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  some  blast  beats  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  good  amount  of  speed  metal  and  rock'n'roll  influences  as  well  as  all  of  the  songs  also  sticking  to a   heavier  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Occultism,  Necromancy,  Drugs  and  Insanity  themes. 

  In  my  opinion  Destructo  are  a  very  great  sounding  blackened  thrash  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a    fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Succubus"  "Necromancy"  "Total  Death"  and  Demonic  Possession".  8  out  of  10.

Acid Witch/Vaultwraith/Spooky Vol. II/Hells Headbangers/2021 Split EP Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between  Michigan's  Acid  Witch  and  Ohio's  Vaultwraith  called  "Spooky  Vol.  II"  which  was  released  on  Halloween  by  Hells  Headbangers  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Acid  Witch  a  band  that  plays  a  psychedelic  form  of  doom/death  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  slow,  dark  and  heavy  doom  metal  sound  along  with  some  psychedelic  style  keyboards.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  screams  which  also  adds  in  touches  of  black  metal  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  death  metal  growls  are  also  utilized  at  times  as  well  as  some  spoken  word  parts also  being  utilized  briefly  before  going  into  a  faster  direction  which  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  blast  beats,  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  an  old  school  style.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Witchcraft,  Horror  and  Drug  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Acid  Witch  are  a  very  great  sounding  psychedelic  mixture  of  doom  and  death  metal  with  some  touches  of  black  metal  and  if  you  a  fan  of t hose  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Cinema  Wasted".

  Next  up  is  Vaultwraith  who  return  with  their  mixture  of   black,  doom,  death,  thrash,  speed  and  heavy  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  heavy  80's  influenced  style  along  with  some  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later.  The  music  also  shows  some  influences  of  both  the  first  and second  wave  era's  along  with  some  death  metal  growls  and  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  elements  of  thrash  and  speed  metal  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  riffing. 

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  old  school  style.  Influences  of   doom  metal  can  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  as  well  as  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  horror  and  occultism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Vaultwraith  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of   black,  doom,  death,  thrash,  speed  and  heavy  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Prophecy  of  The  Black  Spider".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of b lack,  doom,  death  and  thrash  metal.  8  out  of  10.

  This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Switzerland's  Samael  which  also  showed  the  beginnings  of  their  industrial  black  metal  and  the  album  was  originally  released  in  1996  and  called  "Passage"  which  was  re-issued  in  2021  by  MDD  Records.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  keyboards  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  has  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  also  being  utilized  at  times.

  Vocals  are  in  between  black  metal  screams  and  growls  while  the  music  also  has  its  symphonic  moments.  All  of  the  drum  beats  are  also  programmed  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  along  with  some  elements  of  doom  metal  also  being  added  into  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs.

  Touches  of  industrial  can  also  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with  one  track  also  adding  in  some tribal  style  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  an  shamanistic  mixture  as  well  as  all  of  the  songs  also  sticking  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  tempo  direction  and  when  clean  vocals  are  utilized  they  also  add  in  some  influences  of  goth  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Spirituality,  Philosophical  and  Scientific  themes.
