Ulthar are a band from Oakland, California that plays a mixture of black, death metal and crust and this is a review of their 2018 album "Cosmovore' which will be released in November by 20 Buck Spin.
A very dark and heavy sound starts off the album along with some black metal screams a few seconds later while the faster sections of t he songs also use a great amount of blast beats as well as the vocals also utilizing a great amount of death metal growls and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them.
A great amount of crust elements can be heard in the bands musical style while dark sounding melodies are also added into some of the riffing along with the songs also bringing in a mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and when synths are utilized they bring in more of a horror movie atmosphere as well as spoken word samples also being used briefly, the music also has its technical moments and the closing track is very long and epic in length.
Ulthar plays a musical style that mixes black, death metal and crust together to create a sound of their own, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover supernatural horror and surrealism along with some inspiration from the writings of H.P Lovecraft.
In my opinion Ulthar are a very great sounding mixture of black, death metal and crust and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Cosmovore" and "Dunwich Whore". 8 out of 10.
