Vouna are a solo project from Olympia, Washington that has been featured before in this zine and on this recording plays a mixture of atmospheric black and funeral doom metal with elements of dungeon synth and darkwave and this is a review of her 2021 album "Atropis" which will be released on July 16th by Profound Lore Records.
Eclectic lap steel's start off the album along with some clean vocals a few seconds later which also adds in touches of darkwave while the slower sections of the songs also add in the heaviness of funeral doom metal. When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats and black metal style tremolo picking can also be heard.
At times the music also gets very atmospheric sounding while the synths also bring elements of dungeon synth onto the recording. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style along with most of the tracks also being very long and epic in length and melodies are also added into some of the riffing.
Orchestra style structures can also be heard in some parts of the album along with some tracks also adding in harp's, violins and touches of folk music as well as one track also introducing high pitched black metal screams onto the recording. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover death, mourning and suicidal ideation themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Vouna and if you are a fan of atmospheric black and funeral doom metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Highest Mountain" and "What Once Was". 8 out of 10.
