Thaumaturgy are a solo project from Kansas that plays plays a very dissonant and cavernous form of blackened death metal with elements of doom/death metal and this is a review of his 2023 album "Tenebrous Oblations" which will b e released on January 20th by Adirondack Black Mass Records.
A very dark sounding intro starts off the album before going into a heavier direction while elements of doom metal can also be heard in the slower sections of the songs. Vocals are mostly very deep and cavernous sounding death metal growls and dark sounding melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing.
The music also adds in a decent amount of 90's influences while the faster sections of the songs also add in a decent amount of blast beats and black metal touches. At times the music also gets very dissonant sounding along with some of the tracks also being very long and epic in length.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with a couple of the songs also adding in a brief use of synths as well as some tremolo picking also being added into some of the faster riffing at times, when guitar solos and leads are finally utilized they are done in a very dark yet melodic style. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover occultism, esotericism, death and decay themes.
In my opinion Thaumaturgy are a very great sounding cavernous and dissonant mixture of black, death and doom metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this solo project. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Rites Of Uncreation" and "Withered Flesh Effigy". 8 out of 10.
