Chapel Of Samhain are a band from Portugal that plays a blackened form of death metal and this is a review of their 2024 album "Black Onyx Cave" which was released on cassette by Helldprod Records.
Horror movie style keyboards start off the album before going into a heavier direction while the faster sections of the songs also add in a decent amount of blast beats. Vocals are a mixture of death metal growls and black metal screams along with the music also being very heavily rooted in the early 90's era.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while dark sounding melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing. The faster riffs also add in a lot of tremolo picking along with a lot of the music also sounding like it could of easily recorded and release more than 30 years ago.
Keyboards also return on later tracks and one of the songs is also very long and epic in length. Gregorian chants can also be heard briefly as the album progresses. The production sounds very old school in the 90's tradition while the lyrics cover Alchemy, Philosophy and Occultism themes.
In my opinion Chapel Of Samhain are a very great sounding blackened death metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this cassette. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Flesh" and "Ether". 8 out of 10.
