Deathwhite are a band from the United States that plays a blackened and gothic form of doom metal and this is a review of their self released 2014 ep "Etherial".
Acoustic guitars start off the ep and after the intro drums are added into the music and they mix in with the acoustic guitars before the musical direction starts going for a more heavy and melodic sound along with some clean singing vocals and a few seconds alter guitar leads become a part of the recording.
As the ep progresses the band finds its sound with the music using a mixture of clean and heavy parts which gives the music a more progressive feeling and the band has a very gothic and melodic orientated way to playing doom metal and while the music has some traces of the more melodic and gothic styles of black metal along with the riffing in the last track showing a strong element of that sound it avoids the vocals of that genre and uses more melodic vocals which adds to the originality of the recording.
Deathwhite plays a gothic form of doom metal that is influenced by later day Paradise Lost and Katatonia with their music really reminding me a lot of the "Discouraged Ones" album and it is a nice change to hear younger bands go back to t his style instead of the early 90's material which most bands copy, the production sounds very professional for beign a self released recording while the lyrics explore the pitfalls of existence and organized religion along with a Nietzchian feeling.
In my opinion Deathwhite are a very great sounding gothic doom metal band with a melodic black metal edge and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Give Up The Ghost" and "A Burden To Carry". 8 out of 10.
