CNTRL are a band from Toronto, Ontario, Canada that plays a blackened form of sci-fi space groove metal and this is a review of their self released 2019 album "Arrival".
Sci Fi orientated soundscapes start off the album before going into more of a heavier musical direction while the faster sections of the songs also bring in a great amount of brutal sounding blast beats. Throughout the recording you can also h ear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
Black metal screams can also be heard quite a bit throughout the recording along with the music also getting very atmospheric at times. Elements of groove metal can also be heard in the guitar riffing while the solos and leads are done in a very distorted yet melodic style as well as getting very technical at times and death metal growls are also added into certain sections of the recording.
Some tracks also brings in a brief use of spoken word parts while the synths enhance the sci fi elements of the music. Some songs also add in a small amount of clean playing and as the album progresses touches of djent and prog metal can also be heard in some parts of the music as well as one song bringing in a more groove metal style of vocals. The production sounds very dark and heavy while the lyrics cover horror and science fiction themes.
In my opinion CNTRL are a very great sounding blackened sci-fi space groove metal band and if you are looking for something very original, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Heralds Of Ascension" "The Prophet Of Oblivion" and "Dead Space". 8 out of 10.
