Ulthar are a band from Oakland, California that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays a mixture of blackened death metal and crust and this is a review of their 2020 album "Providence" which was released by 20 Buck Spin.
A very heavy and brutal sound starts off the album while the faster sections of the songs also bring in a great amount of blast beats. Vocals are a mixture of black metal screams and death metal growls along with some dark sounding melodies also being added into some of the guitar riffing.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while some songs also adds in some sci-fi orientated synths onto the album. Acoustic guitars can also be heard briefly along with some influences of crust and d beat also being utilized at times.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very dark yet melodic style along with one track also adding in a brief use of spoken word parts as well as some dissonant elements also being utilized at times, touches of grindcore can also be heard in the faster sections of the music. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover the writings of H.P Lovecraft and Abstract themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Ulthar and if you are a fan of blackened death metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Undying Spear" "Cudgel" and "Humanoid Knot". 8 out of 10.
