Portland, Oregon's Ulthar have returned with a new recording which shows the music going for a technical and blackened form of death metal and this is a review of their 2023 album "Helionomicon" which was released by 20 Buck Spin.
Clean playing starts off the album before going into a very fast and brutal direction which also utilizes a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Vocals are a mixture of black metal s creams and death metal growls along with the music also having its technical moments and both of the tracks are also very long and epic in length.
Both of the songs are also very long and epic in length while the album also adds in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. Melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing along with the guitar leads also adding in more of a technical style, synths and evil soundscapes are also added into the background at times.
On this recording Ulthar plays a very technical style of black metal which is also very different from previous releases. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover cosmic horror and abstract themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from Ulthar and if you are a fan of technical and blackened death metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Helionomicon". 8 out of 10.
