Obsidian Kingdom are a band from Spain that has been featured before in this zine and that started out as an experimental mixture of black, doom and death metal but have evolved into more of a progressive and melodic extreme metal band on this recording and this is a review of their 2016 album "A Year Of No Summer" which was released by Season Of Mist.
Drum beats start off the album along with some atmospheric sounds which also leads up to melodic singing and clean playing being added onto the recording before going into a heavier musical direction which still also utilizes a great amount of melody and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them.
Some of the tracks are very long and epic in length and some songs also bring in a small amount of spoken word parts while the synths also give the songs more of an experimental feeling when they are used and they also bring in an experimental track and the whole album also sticks mostly to a very slow musical direction and on the last track the vocals starting getting slightly more aggressive while also adding in a few seconds of spoken word parts while also speeding up for a few seconds and also adding in blast beats.
Obsidian Kingdom move away from the black and death metal roots of their earlier recordings and focus more on a melodic and progressive style of metal which is also very different from anything they have done in the past, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Esoterism, Psychology and Fear themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Obsidian Kingdom and if you are a fan of progressive and melodic metal, you should enjoy this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "A Year With No Summer" "Darkness" and "Away/Absent". 8 out of 10.
