Feed The Corpses To The Pigs/This Insidious Horror/Horror Pain Gore Death Productions/2021 CD Review

Feed  The  Corpses  To  The  Pigs  are  a  band  from  Albuquerque,  New  Mexico  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  death,  thrash  metal,  grindcore  and  crossover  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "This  Insidious  Horror"  which  will  be  released  in  October  by  horror  Pain  Gore  Death  Productions.

Horror  movie  style  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  while  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  emtal  growls.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats,  grindcore  and  crossover  elements  can  also  be  heard.

Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  some  of  the  riffing  also  shows  an  influence  of  thrash  metal.  The  songs  also  mix  both  modern  and  old  school  extreme  metal styles  together  along  with  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

Nocturnal Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?

Not much actually... we recorded a song for an ABSU tribute album and re-recorded some guitar and vocal tracks for 2 songs which where originally left from our 2019 recording session we did for the split 7“ with NUCTEMERON. We where not that satisfied with a couple of details anymore, like for example the guitar sound. The songs are a re-recording of Beast of Hades from Violent Revenge, a SLAUGHTER (Can) cover and will be out on a split 7“ with SABBAT (Jpn) end of the year. We will start rehearsing for our hopefully first show again in the czech republic in october this year !

2.In August you have a new album coming out, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

I tried to stay loyal to what NOCTURNAL is known for without copying myself but tried to get it a bit rougher around the edges again than how we did our last album. Also i think the new songs have a good portion of traditional metal in them which was not really planned but just turned out that way, also thanks to 6 out of 10 songs have a quite worked out guitar solo this time. Guitar solos where rare and also not very in depth in past NOCTURNAL material. One could say i finally appreciated the art of guitar wankery, ha ha ! Better late than never !

3.This is also your first full length since 2014.can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

To make a long story short, lot´s of line up changes. Getting the right people to replace those who went away was quite a task and took it´s time. But we played 2 great south american tours in 2017 and 2019 and also many single shows through all europe over the years. So we where never really away, also those 7 years passed by like nothing and honestly i ask myself many times what the fuck happened in that time, ha ha !

4.Over the years you also have covered some occult and satanic themes with your lyrics, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts?

As far as lyrics go they are more there to set a certain mood. I want them to be traditional metal lyrics which suit our songs and the topics which interest me more are true crime, medieval times, history, myths and lore. My interest in the „dark arts“ is not very deep. I was a bit interested in La Veyan satanism when i was a teenager but i realized fast that when you follow that you can just as well just follow your own mind and your own self and you are just as good. Nowadays if there are satanic themes in our lyrics they are more just anti religious or simple good old blasphemy.

5.Can you also tell us a little bit more about the lyrical content of the new album and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

The topics range from Conan the barbarian, over war in dystopian wastelands and the end of the world (Mad Max style), escaping death, ripping angels apart, occult sacrifice rituals to NOCTURNAL being the best band in the world. My progress as a songwriter did not go very far. From a technical point of view i´m on the same level as i was 10 years ago. I think nowadays i just know better how to make a song or a whole album more interesting i think.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

We got a guy named Nino Andaresta from Indonesia doing the cover art for us. It´s an oil painting. We gave him a rough idea, he made some sketches and we went from there. We wanted a striking old school cover artwork.

and we got it. We are more than satisfied with how it turned out.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

That´s a hard one. For some reason i more remember the shitty ones, ha ha ! Also the shows i remember being the most fun to play because the audience went apeshit and tore the place apart where hardly our best shows performance wise. I  remember having shows where we had a great performance, killer sound and we were on fire but people did not give a shit, ha ha. We are just a gang of four with no bullshit on stage, just thrashing metal mayhem !

8.Last year you where part of a split with 'Nuctemeron' , what are your thoughts on the other band that had participated on the recording?

They are very good friends of mine. But that fact aside it´s an absolutely killer band ! I had them over at my place just last weekend to record 2 songs for a split 7“ with NUNSLAUGHTER. I helped them to record with my equipment and Sascha from WITCHING HOUR will be handling the mixing in his Journey to Eternity Studio. He will also mix the 2 NOCTURNAL songs for the SABBAT Split by the way. NUCTEMERON is pure possessed ancient metal !

9.The new album is going to be released on 'Dying Victims Productions', how would you compare working with this label to other labels you have been a part of in the past?

They are absolutely great to work with. I know Flo the owner of DVP since many years so it´s a match made in hell. No complaints about HIGH ROLLER Records though who released „Storming Evil“, they did a good job as well. For this album we just choose DVP because we felt more comfortable around the bands on DVP. DISPLEASED on the other hand who released the first 2 albums can fuck off. They totally screwed us over after the guy who got us there left the label. They sold many licenses where we never saw a penny and still owe us royalties as well. Even after they went out of business they sold all album rights to some guy who is still trying to sell licenses for every album on the DISPLEASED catalogue even when the contracts are no longer valid. Even when you take the fact aside they broke their side of the contract with not paying us, all contracts they did under their banner have expired since they officially went out of business. But we are not the only ones who have those problems with them.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your newer music by fans of black and thrash metal?

So far i´m quite satisfied with the reactions we get to the new album. Some people complain about the vocalist change but sooner or later they will get used to it. I´m looking forward to hear what everyone else thinks once the album will be out. 7 years is a long time, many probably thought the band is dead. But we don´t do anyone that favour !

11.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are part of?

John is playing in SLAUGHTER MESSIAH who released a new album just last year. They are also working on a follow up as far as i know. Incinerator plays in WOUND which is a black/death metal band who also have a new album in the pipeline to be released on VÁN records soon. Invoker is still singing in WITCHBURNER. As for myself, we just released a 7“ with a new band called SACRIFIXION on HELL´s HEADBANGERS Records and earlier this year a demo of a new Doom Metal band called MOON was released on DVP as well. We are aiming for a full album with MOON. In 2 weeks i will play my first post Covid show with my death/doom band THE FOG and we are also in the process of doing a new album. Ah, and the first recordings of  a new Black Metal project called VOID SCEPTRE will be finished soon which has Defiler of THE FOG on guitars, V.Lord of THE FOG on vocals and me on bass and drums. This will be total 90´s finnish and norwegian  black metal stuff !

12.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

No fucking idea ! We´ll get to that once i´m in the writing mood for new stuff. But for sure it will not be far from the stuff people know from NOCTURNAL.

12.What are you listening to nowadays?

Lot´s of doom metal and as always JUDAS PRIEST. Some new bands which i like are EVILCULT from brazil, INSANE from Sweden and LUCIFUGE from germany.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

I´m more than excited to finally have that album out, i´m very proud of what we did there. Besides this just the usual... thanks for the interview ! Unholy Thrash Metal Forever !

Cult  Burial  are  a  band  from  the  United  Kingdom  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  doom,  death  and post  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2021  ep  "Oblivion".

Synth  orientated  soundscapes  start  off  the  ep  along  with  some  playing  a  few  seconds  later  while  whispers  are  also  utilized  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  elements  of  doom  metal.

Vocals are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  death  metal  growls  are  also  utilized  at times.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a very  melodic  style  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  as  well  as  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.

On  this  recording  Cult  burial  remain  true  to  the  mixture  of  black,  doom,  death  and  post  metal  that  they  had  established  on  their  previous  release.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  form  Cult  Burial  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  doom,  death  and  post  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Parasite".  8  out  of  10.

This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between  Mexico's  Infesticide  and  In  Obscurity  Revealed  which  will  be  released  on  August  27th  by  Blood  Harvest  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Infesticide  who  return  with  their  blackened  style  of  death  metal.

Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  dark,  evil  yet  melodic  guitar  solos  and  leads  along  with  some  heavy  riffing a   few  seconds  later.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  tremolo  picking  is  also  added  into  some  of  the  riffing  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Infesticide  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackened  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Blackfire  Permeate".

Next  up  is  In  Obscurity  Revealed  who  return  with  their  blackened  style  of  death  emtal.

Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  horror  samples  before  adding  in  some  dark  yet  melodic  riffing  which  also  takes  the  music  more  into  a  brutal  direction.   When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  death  metal  growls  and  elements  of  black  metal  are  also  utilized  at  times.

Most  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  early  90's  era  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in a   decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  chaos  and  occultism  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  In  Obscurity  Revealed  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackened  death  emtal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Under  The  Vomit  Seal".

Funeral Pile Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Matthias: My name is Matthias. I am the voice of Funeral Pile. Annike is the rhythm guitarist. She brings the hard riffs, but also the melancholic parts. Ralf is our lead guitarist.  He serves the melodies and grooves. He can write new riffs and lyrics twice as fast as anyone else in the band. The fourth member is Martin, our bass player. He arranges the songs and creates the drum tracks. In general he takes care of everything during the recordings, like a producer.

2.Recently you have released your first full length, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

Matthias: When we started to make music again, there was never any conversation about the direction or style of our music. We just went for it. Each of us has a different musical background. Ralf is more into heavy metal, Annike and myself are big black and death metal fans, and Martin just loves any kind of extreme music. Everyone brought his or her musical preferences into the sound of Funeral Pile and it was revised until everyone was really satisfied.

3.The band was broken up for 10 years, what was the cause of the split and also the decision to reform?

Matthias: Some of us left our hometown for their studies. We couldn‘t continue the rehearsals, because of the big distance. But we never lost contact with each other. After 10 years we met for a few beers and it quickly became clear that we still harmonize well, personally and musically. Ralf and Annike composed the first riffs immediately and I wrote the lyrics for the song "Funeral Pile". Since we had no experience in recording, we quickly came up with the idea to bring Martin on board. He immediately agreed. Something better couldn't have happened to us, because he had already released several albums with other bands and performed live as a bass player with Waldgeflüster. He is the mastermind behind the sound of Funeral Pile.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

Matthias: The biggest lyrical part of the album comes from Ralf. He is an insanely good and fast writer. He draws a lot of inspiration from books he likes to read. Klondike, for example, is a tribute to the "Tales Of The North" stories of Jack London, Nameless City is inspired by the horror story of the same name by H.P. Lovecraft....

In my writing, I am fascinated by Death and unjust cruelty. Annike writes very personal lyrics in which she processes her experiences.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Funeral Pile'?

Matthias: When we founded the band in 2008, most of us were big fans of the bands Unleashed and Amon Amarth. Back in the days they were huge musical influences and we chose the band name Funeral Pile as a reference to the burial of Vikings, that were sometimes burnt on a wooden pile. Some of the heathen tribes thought, that the smoke of the fire would carry the dead to his afterlife. In the song Funeral Pile the word is used as a synonym for a funeral pyre respectively a stack.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

Matthias: The fantastic artwork was designed and drawn by Joan Llopis Doménech. He has done many brilliant covers for different bands like: Wolvencrown, Sojourner, Uprising....

We sent him our album and he was inspired by it. After only 2 weeks the album cover was finished and we were really excited about his work. The main part of the cover really refers to the lyrics of our first song "Funeral Pile" which is also our band name. It's about the crimes of the church and the inquisition, how hundreds of men and women were burned at the stake. A cruel spectacle for the whole family ;-)

9.Has the band done any live shows or open to the idea?

Matthias: We (re)started the band with the start of the pandemic. So rehearsing was impossible at the beginning and we focused on songwriting and recording. We surely want to play live shows in perspective. But as everyone of us has little kids it might take some time until we are able to hit the road.

10.Currently the band is unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received  any interest?

Matthias: Before we released the album digitally, we were looking for a label. We wrote to about 40 labels, but only got a response from 2 of them. They were very honest and couldn't accommodate us because Corona was at its peak at that time and no one knew what would happen next. Financially, without concerts and festivals, most labels were doing badly anyway. But we hope that now that our album is out, a label will be interested in us and willing to work with us on future releases.

11.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

Matthias: So far the response to our album has been really fantastic. We received E-Mails from the U.S., Australia, Brazil, Greece… from people who really like our album. I can not say if all of them are Black Metal fans or our music attracts also fans of other genres. There have been requests for CDs and LPs. We didn‘t expect this in these modern times, so we are a bit unprepared. We are thinking of pressing and selling CDs by ourselves.

Of course there were some critical voices, but that‘s ok, because we don‘t have the ambition to please everyone.

12.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Matthias: I think we will continue the direction we took on the first album. A mixture of different genres, but rooted in Black and Death Metal. The first riffs, lyrics and song structures are already done and we all can't wait to record again.

13.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Matthias: I can only speak for myself, but my most listened genre is definitely Black Metal. From newer stuff like: Wormwood, Orm, Vanhelga.... to older stuff like Windir, Setherial, Nagelfar.... But also Death Metal, Classic Rock, Oldies.... end up on my turntable.

14.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts

Matthias:  Funeral Pile would like to thank you for the great interview. And to all friends and supporters out there, thank you for your loyalty and support. We are very proud to be a part of this great metal culture.

Cheers and greetings
