ILLT/Urhat/Indie Recordings/2021 CD Review

ILLT  are  a  solo  project  from  Norway  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  death,  thrash  metal  and  doom  rock  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2021  album  "Urhat"  which  was  released  by  indie  Recordings.

A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  elements  of  doom  metal  can  also be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs.  Apocalyptic  soundscapes  are  also  utilized  briefly  along  with  some  melodies  also  being  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

Vocals  are  done  in  more  of  an  aggressive  thrash/groove  metal  style  while  death  metal  growls  are  also  utilized  at  times.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  along  with  the  tremolo  picking  also mixing  in  influences  of  black  metal  and  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  having  their  chaotic  moments.  Whispers  can  also  be  heard  briefly  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  touches  of  black'n'roll  can  also  be  heard  in  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs.

Acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard on a   couple  of  songs  along  with  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  there  is  also  some  session  work  from  embers  of  Megadeath,  Soilwork,  Chrome  Division  and  Nile.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  anger,  hopelessness,  contempt  for  the  human  race,  and  the  dark4est  sides  of  religion,  politics  and  de-evolution.

In  my  opinion  ILLT  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black,  death,  thrash  metal  and  doom  rock  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Millennial  Judas"  "Scythian  King"  and  "The  End  Of  All  Things".  8  out  of  10.

Dungeon Steel/Bloodlust/Signal Rex/2021 EP Review

Dungeon  Steel  are  a  duo  from  Ecuador  that  plays  a  blackened  form  of  speed  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  ep  "Bloodlust"  which  will  be  released  in  November.

Horror  movie  style  synths  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  speed  metal  direction  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  The  music  also  mixes  in  a  great  amount  of  first  wave  and  thrash  metal  elements  and  also  makes  an  80's  style  modern  with  their  brutal  approach.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  also  remain  very  true  to  an  old  school  extreme  metal  style.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  one  of  the  tracks  also  being  an  instrumental  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  as  the  ep  progresses  a  brief  use  of  clean  vocals  can  also  be  heard.

Dungeon  Steel  goes  back  to  the  80's  era  of  black,  thrash  and  speed  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  horror,  occultism  and  metal  themes.

Svpremacist  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  the  80's  and  90's  era  of  black  and  thrash  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  morbid  nihilism  themes.

In  my  opinion  Svpremacist  are  a  very  great  sounding  blackened  thrash  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Witches"  "Spawn"  and  Black  Cards".  8  out  of  10.

Wazzara Interview

Answering: Barbara (vocals, guitar)

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?

A lot! There is so much to do and to consider if you do a release all by yourself. Luckily, we have good people helping us, like Markus Eck from METALMESSAGE with the promotion. He does an exceptionally good job and is very passionate. Also, we are rehearsing to play our first gig as a full band in October. And we recently had a great shoot with Snakehill Productions for a video clip that will be released in October.

2.On Halloween you have a new album coming out on Halloween, musically how does it differ form your previous ep?

The sound is fiercer, more hypnotic and has more blackgaze and black metal influences than the EP. I also decided to use grunts because it really fits the wildness I wanted to portray in the new songs.

3.You refer to your music as being 'moongaze', can you tell us a little bit more about this term?

It's a term I came up with myself, referring to the shoegaze elements in our music and to the moon, which influences my art a lot. To be honest, I find it difficult to choose a genre for your own music, so I also kind of did it to show that it's not important at all to stick to a certain genre. At the end of the day, it should be about the music itself.

4.A lot of your lyrics cover water from more of a poetic view, can you tell us a little bit more about how long you have been interest in this topic?

I have always been strongly attracted to water, even when I was a child. I could sit by the water or swim in it for hours. I'm also fascinated by its ambivalence. Water is the basis of life in every sense; it can be soothing, but - as we have unfortunately seen recently - also very destructive. All in all, water just flows; and that's something I crave in my life: just going with the flow. Or as Eddie Vedder put it: "I'll ride the wave where it takes me."

5.What is the ,meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Wazzara'?

Wazzara is Old High German and means "the water-born". Since the project was started as a solo project of mine, I wanted it to have a name that was personally connected to me. The reason why I chose an old language is my interest in those.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

I love this piece of art! It was created by Pierre Brost (www.pixelizer.de), an incredibly skilled illustrator and artist. I asked him if he could make a symbol related to the moon and its cycles, and that at the same time would be very feminine, because these themes strongly influenced the lyrics of the new album. And that's what Pierre did. I'm very proud to have his art on our new album.

7.Originally the band started out as a solo project but has evolved into a full band with the new album, can you tell us a little bit more about the addition of newer members?

I always wanted to bring wazzara to the stage, even when I started the project. But it was too much to organize at that time, so I just started on my own. When I decided to do a full-length album, I decided to do it with a full band this time. So I was joined by George, with whom I’ve been working for many years – I did the vocals in his project Between Giants and he produced and recorded the albums of my former band Caladmor – and by Mäsi, who played the guitar in Caladmor until we both left the band in 2018. It was very important to me not to have just "anyone" in the band. So I'm very happy about how it all turned out.

8.Once the pandemic slows down are there any plans for live shows?

Yes, there is! If everything stays as it is - we will play on October 9th as support for the Swiss dark metal band Dreams in Fragments. It will be our very first gig as a full band. Further gigs are already being planned, but not confirmed yet.

9.Currently the band is unsigned, are you looking for al label or have received any interest?

We are basically open for a cooperation with a label, but if, then it has to make sense for us. So, we wouldn't sign just any offer as long as we can do everything ourselves. There has to be an added value.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of post metal?

I am very grateful that the EP has received very positive feedback so far. Now, of course, I'm curious to see how the album will be received; but the most important thing is that you like your work yourself. And with both the EP and the album, I can say that I do.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

I'm curious about that too! (laughs) I never know what will happen; for me an album is always like a snapshot of current influences and ideas that can change from year to year. But I will definitely keep the dreamy touch in the music; this element is essential for wazzara's music.

12.What are you listening to nowadays?

I right now listen a lot to The Cure, especially the Desintegration album.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

I would like to thank everyone who supported us in our crowdfunding earlier this year. Without you there would be no new album.

Then I would like to thank everyone who listens to and enjoys wazzara's music, your support is really appreciated.

And last but not least, thank you John for this interview and for your time! All the best to you!

Feed the Corpses To The Pigs Interview

1. Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

We have been on a bit of hiatus with COVID messing up the scene.  We are anxious to get back to shows and touring to promote the album, but we want to make sure it is safe for everyone to do so.  So instead, we are continuing to work on new songs.  I think after this album, we will just trickle out new singles for a while.  That seems to be how the music industry is going.

2. You have a new album coming out in October, musically how does it differ from your previous ep?

We wrote our first eight-song EP and recorded it within two months of forming.  We were just getting used to each other, but we wanted to have something for people to check out so we could get shows.  While it was more of a rougher demo, it did show some of our love of smashing up genres.  This album really takes all of our musical influences and allowed us to go creatively wild.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with the new release and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters on both of the releases?

On our first EP, I was writing long-form horror stories.  Stories that took four songs to tell.  With this album, I tried to write more self-contained songs.  I’m not sure this is going to be the trend going forward, but it did allow me to experiment with more styles easier.

For subject matter, while we continued with traditional horror fare, I also touched the third rail of some political ideas.  Jesus is my Respirator is a direct barrage against how religion has been handling COVID, The Death of Expertise is about social media company’s algorithms feeding people false information, and Flashpoint is about worker inequality.  I also tried to write more personal lyrics such as on I Drink Myself To Death.  I definitely want to continue that; I’ve already got a new song we are working on that causes me pain.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Feed The Corpses To The Pigs'?

I wanted a name that would put a picture in your head.  Something that would be immediately memorable.  I had thought about it when reading Clive Barker’s Pigs Blood Blues and other than its unwieldy length, I’m pleased with it.

5. Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

This is an interesting one on our end.  We had an amazing cover done by Riaj Gragoth at @luciferiumwargraphics.  He had done our last EP and he also designed our awesome logo.  When we were working with our new label Horror Pain Gore Death, they wanted us to do a full album.  As we were working on the new songs and the album morphed in tone, we felt like we needed a different album cover.  It so happened that Andreas Christanetoff (Armadda Art) had a random one-off piece of art (he usually only does commissions) and it really felt like the horror that we wanted to work with.  The best part, though, is BOTH album covers have been designed as t-shirts at HPGD and will be available for pre-order on the 15th of September!

6. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

I think our live show stands out.  I’ve got a dark sense of humor, so I riff with the crowd on horrible stuff.  We also have a friend who works in latex and makes us a variety of body parts that we throw at the audience.  Come to our show and you might get a unique souvenir.  From the start to the end, there will never be dead air… we do our best to entertain outside of just playing songs.

When really only formed a bit before COVID hit, so we haven’t got to play a lot of shows.  We did have an excellent show with Luna13.  It was a ton of bands playing at the KrampusFest event.  In fact, we wrote a song specifically for KrampusFest, The Ghost of Winter, which is our first video and also features Rick Rozz from Death/Massacre.

7. Do you have any show plans once the new album is releases?

We were just setting up shows before this new spike hit.  So, we will get out there soon!

8. On the new album you also have some guests, can you tell us a little bit more about who they are and also their contributions to the recording?

We have worked with some of the best in metal!  As I mentioned before, Rick Rozz is on our album.  I had written a song and thought it would be awesome to have him on it.  I sent him the unsolicited track expecting crickets, but he loved it!  He was willing to go to a local studio and do the leads for free.  It really let us know we were onto something.

COVID and injuries had hobbled us, but we wanted to go through with finishing the album.  We reached out to Daniel Torgal (Analypse / Enblood) with some of the beats our drummer wrote so he could help us finish up.  He is flipping awesome.  He not only understood what we wanted, but he found a ton of ways where he could insert his personality into our songs.

Finally, we got to work with Will Putney (Fit for an Autopsy) to master our album.  His ears helped create the crushingly heavy tones you can hear on the new LP.  When we have worked with engineers in the past, we usually have lots of feedback.  Will killed it on the first try.

9. On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of extreme metal?

I think people worldwide have been digging the costumes and the material.  For a band with little touring, we managed to rack up 5,000 fans on Facebook from all over the globe.  With the new album, it appears that everyone gravitates to different songs.

10. Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

I would probably like to add a bit of ambient keyboard in some places.  We were trying to do some last-minute collaborations, but unfortunately it didn’t pan out.  Keyboards could help fill in some extra horror.  Otherwise, I think we will continue to look at the horrors of the human condition rather than just some murder and gore material.  I think, though, we will just continue to mix styles as they fit.

11. What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

All of the members of the band listen to different music styles and definitely different metal styles.  For me, I listen to a ton of punk rock.  I think you’ll find my love of repeated choruses in our music.

Today on my walk I was listening to a mix of Fuck the Facts (Pleine Noirceur), Pears (Self-Entitled), and Vader (Solitude in Madness).

12. Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Yes indeed!  We want to thank you for supporting the metal scene!  There is very little money in music and it is almost non-existent in metal, so when anyone is willing to dedicate their time to working with bands, we have the utmost respect for them!  Thank you for taking the time to do this interview!
