Depths Above are a band from the Czech Republic that plays a mixture of black, doom, death and post metal and this is a review of their self released 2018 album "Ex Nihilo".
Atmospheric soundscapes start off the album while all of the tracks are very long and epic in length along with some synths and spoken word parts also being utilized at times before going into more of a heavier and dissonant direction and when the music speeds up blast beats can be heard.
Tremolo picking is also added into some of the faster riffing while the solos and leads are done in a very dark and melodic style along with all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them as well as the vocals bringing in a mixture of death metal growls and black metal screams.
Clean vocals are also added into certain sections of the recording while the riffs also bring in a decent amount of dark sounding melodies along with some elements of doom metal in the slower sections of the music as well as some elements of post metal also being used at times and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and they also bring in an instrumental track.
Depths Above plays a musical style that takes black, doom, death and atmospheric post metal and mixes them together to create something original, the production sounds very professional for being a self released recording while the lyrics cover dark and nihilistic themes.
In my opinion Depths Above are a very great sounding mixture of black, doom, death and post metal and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Descent" and "Ex Nihilo". 8/5 out of 10.
