Obscura Qalma are a band from Italy that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays a very symphonic and orchestra driven form of blackened death metal and this is a review of their 2021 album "Apotheosis" which will be released in November by Rising Nemesis Records.
Cinematic soundscapes start off the album along with some symphonic elements and orchestral elements a few seconds later which also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs. When the music speeds up a decent amount of brutal sounding blast beats can be heard while dark sounding melodies are also added into some of the riffing.
The vocals are a mixture of blackened screams and death metal growls while the songs also from slow, mid paced to fast parts. All of the musical instruments on the album also have a very powerful sound to them along with the solos and leads also being done in a very dark yet melodic style as well as a later song also adding in a brief use of clean playing.
On this recording Obscura Qalma remains true to the symphonic and orchestra driven style of blackened death metal that they had establish on their previous release. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover astrophysics, psychoanalysis, occultism, nihilism, the limits of human knowledge and the impassable boundaries of its own existence and also takes some inspirations from the writings of Nietzsche, Freud, Massimo Recalcati and James Owen Weatherhall.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Obscura Qalma and if you are a fan of symphonic blackened death metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Impure Black Enlightenment" "Transcending The Sefirot" "Fleshbound" and "Awaken A Shrine To Oblivion". 8 out of 10.
