Nepenthe are a band from Ontario, Canada that plays a very atmospheric form of blackened doom metal and this is a review of their 2024 compilation album "The Fading Promise Of Tomorrow + Elegies of Loss And Doom" which was released in 2024 by Hypaethral Records and consists of their 2020 and 2024 ep's.
Clean playing starts off the compilation while clear vocals can also be heard on some of the tracks. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are also done in a very melodic style along with the slower sections of the songs also bringing in elements of doom metal and the riffs also add in a lot of melody.
Some of the tracks are also very long and epic in length while the harsh vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams. When the music speeds up a decent amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can also be heard along with the compilation also having its atmospheric moments and one song is also a 'Of the Wand And Moon' cover.
Spoken word parts can also be heard briefly along with some of the tracks also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and a couple of songs also bring in a small amount of acoustic guitars, violins can also be heard briefly. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover existentialism and the writings of Fredrich Nietzsche and Charles Baudelaire.
In my opinion Nepenthe are a very great sounding atmospheric blackened doom metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this compilation. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Upon These Familiar Shores" and "Drowning In Acrid Light". 8 out of 10.
