Deathwhite/For A Black Tomorrow/2017 Full Length Review

Deathwhite  are  a  band  from  Pennsylvania  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  melodic,  gothic  and  blackened  form  of  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2017  album  "For  A  Black  Tomorrow"  which  will  be  released  in  March.

A  very  heavy  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  album  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  while  acoustic  guitars  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  the  vocals  being  done  in  a  clean  singing  fashion  and  you  can  also  hear  a  touch  of  post  black  metal  in  the  riffing.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  and  the  acoustic  sections  of  the  songs  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  progressive  edge  while  the  slow  riffs  are  also  very  heavily  influenced  by  doom  and  goth  metal  and  synths  are  also  used  briefly  and  the  songs  stick  to  mostly  a  slow  or  mid  paced  direction.

Deathwhite  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to the  goth  and  doom  metal  mixture  of  previous  releases  while  still  mixing  in  elements  of  post  black  metal,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  depressive,  and  existential themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Deathwhite  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  doom,  goth  and  post  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS INCLUDE  "The  Grace  Of  The  Dark"  "Just  Remember"  "Death  And  The  Master"  and  "For  A  Black  Tomorrow".  8  out  of  10.

Vorzug  are  a  band  from  Arizona  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  blackened  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  ep  "Threes"  which  was  released by  Apollyon  Entertainment.

A  very  heavy  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls  a  few  seconds  later  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  solos  and  leads  also  use  a  great  amount  of  traditional  metal  style  melodies.

Elements  of  thrash  can  be  hear d in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  while  the  songs  stick  to  either  a  slow  or  mid  paced  musical  direction.

Vorzug  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  blackened  death  metal  style  of  previous  releases  while  also  getting  more  melodic,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics    cover  dark  themes.

In  my  opinion  Vorzug  are  a  very  great  sounding  blackened  death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.   RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Under  A  Dying  Sun".  8  out  of  10.

Lucifera  are  a  band  from  Columbia  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  and  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "Preludio  Del  Mar"  which  will  be  released  on  February  24th  by  Morbid  Skull  Records.

Horror  movie  soundtrack  style  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  ritualistic  voices  and  after  a  minute  the  music  goes  into  a  heavier  and  more  melodic  direction  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  high  pitched  blackened  metal  screams  and  you  can  also  hear  a  great  amount  of  thrash  influences.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  long  and  epic  in  length  and  while  a  great  amount  of  80's  and  90's  influences  can  be  heard  in  the  songs  the  music  still  sounds  very  modern  at  the  same  time  and  when  guitar  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic fashion  and  demonic  sounds  also  make  a  return  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  as  the  album  progresses  and  acoustic  guitars  are  added  onto  th  last  track.

Lucifera  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  black  and  thrash  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Spanish  and  cover  Occultism,  Blasphemous,  Chaos,  and  Destruction  themes.

In  my  opinion  Lucifera  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black  and  thrash  metal  and  if  you are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Los  Demonios  De  Loudun"  "Culto  Ancestral"  "Preludio  Del  Mal"  and  "Blasfemias".  8  out  of  10.

Celestial Crown Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

Sergei: We decided to re-record some of our early works. When we listen to them today we hear a lot of great ideas we still love much, but we also hear that there is a significant room for improvements in terms of sounding. We learned a lot since those days, so we believe we can give a new life to some of our old gems.

2.In September you have a new album coming out, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Sergei: I would describe the sound of “Rebirth” as perfect J
But if to be serious, the sound is complex and dimensional. There is a lot of everything, it comprises elements of doom, black, gothic and death metal, that are organically combined into monolithic atmospheric sound.
“Rebirth” have number of noticeable differences in style and overall sounding in comparison to previous works. If early albums can be described as dark romance, then starting from previous album “Ascending” Celestial Crown became more philosophical and progressive. Our female singer Diana is now on a parental leave and starting from Rebirth female vocals are made by Viktoria Seimar. Also worth mentioning that if on early albums all songs were composed by Aleksander and I only added lead guitar parts, then starting from “Ascending” I actively contribute to the songwriting. On “Rebirth” there are several songs completely written by me, and it is a challenge to our listeners to find out which songs are those ;) Moreover, now you can hear my vocals here and there on the album – another challenge to listeners. So, yes, there are certain differences. But at the same time we enshrine the spirit of Celestial Crown, there is always something well recognizable in the sound so you can say for sure – this is Celestial sound! This is CELESTIAL CROWN! One and only! J

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music?

Denis: as Sergei mentioned we started with the dark romanticism on our early album, but lately went into more philosophical excogitation. The main concept of the “Rebirth” is the power of the chaos, which gives birth to everything and devour it back at any moment. It is about how negligibly inconspicuous humans are in front of the nature. From the chaos we came and into the chaos we will vanish.     And it is out of our power to change the laws of nature…

4.Originally the band was called 'Celebratum' what was the cause of the new change and also what is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Celestial Crown'?

Denis: I borrowed the word Celebratum from one movie and it fit well to ideology of our newborn band. But soon we discovered that there is already another band with such name. By this time Sergei already prepared a nice logo and we wanted to keep at least some of those beautiful letters in new name. That how we became Celestial Crown.
Sergei: Let me tell you now a real story.
A long time ago, the Son of the Sun came down to Earth to spread the Celestial wisdom. He wore the crystal Crown and the might of all the Universe was hidden in its spikes. The ancient signs covering the Crown carried the fateful prophesy. Thousands of people came to see the celestial flare. But then, abysmal darkness devoured the Sun. And from the North came the storm, colder and bleaker than humanity ever seen. Disastrous was its power. Seven days and seven nights lasted the cry of the Nature. Many have fallen. So did the Son of the Sun. And the Crown was broken up into billions of tiny pieces, and the pieces were scattered all across the Earth, and in every piece a Celestial wisdom and the power of all the Universe was hidden. But now the day has come. Army of the Sun came on Earth to gather shatters together. This was the day of the Rebirth. Rebirth of the Crown. Celestial Crown…

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Sergei: Unfortunately, there is nothing interesting to tell, Celestial Crown is a “studio only” band. We made a few concerts with session players in the past, but then decided that it takes too much time and effort. We all have jobs not related to the music, we live in different cities and even countries. So, Celestial Crown exist in the studio only.  All the material of last albums was written in Denis’s home studio. Me and Aleksander are together responsible for all instruments on albums (guitars, basses, keys and drums). We don’t have separate bass, keys and drum players. All on us J

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

Sergei: In our dreams only. maybe one day when we are rich and famous J

7.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of goth, doom, and black metal?

Sergei: Extremely positive. We have fans all over the world, our albums appear on torrents shortly after release (it is a good sign! J ) and there is really positive feedback in media. People write to us, wishing to see us in their country on stage. It is great, it motivates to move forward! But for some reasons it does not correlate with sells":)"

8.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Sergei: maybe you will hear more progressive riffs, more orchestral things. On Rebirth I made first attempts to use orchestral parts, and I have more ideas for future. But the general atmosphere of the band doubtfully will ever change. We love how Celestial Crown sounds.

9.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Sergei: today there is an impressive amount of amazing bands. I discover some new gems every time I dig into Youtube. In general, I listen to pretty much everything from jazz and classic to technical death metal. But if to name some of the recent findings on the heavy side (I emphasize that only recent finding, I will not mention here something like MDB, it is too obvious :) ) then e.g. Gojira (The Shooting Star is my favorite song at the moment), Destroying The Devoid, Satan's Host (because of amazing vocals, although I usually don’t listen to classic heavy metal), some instrumental bands like e.g. Meridian (check their The Helix Nebula album). I also like how some older bands went to heavily orchestral way. E.g. recent work of Septic Flesh – Titan is just EPIC!!!  And I would also mention new Metallica. Thanks to album Hardwired I started to listen Metallica again after many years.
Denis: I love different styles of metal music. From clean singing to brutal. But honestly my taste is the same for 20 years) my favorites still are Anathema, My Dying Bride, Dark Tranquility, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Septic Flesh, Tiamat, from female vocals scene I prefer Anneke van Giersbergen and Lisa Gerrard from Dead Can Dance.

10.How would you describe your views on Occultism?
Denis: It is personal. I can answer with words from song “Alone in the desert” :
Hold tight for things that have no substance. Hold tight for things that out of existence
Heed only to my voice which speaks without any sound. Look only at the things that are invisible for feelings.
Concealed secret is kept for you over the aeons. Occult mystery is stored for you over the centuries!!!
Sergei: If I will go into details then it will take several pages, so I’ll say shortly that I definitely have certain interest in Occultism. Although I am scientist )

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

Denis: hm lets say pc gaming and all new technologies in PC world) and on the other hand – I can simple be lost in nature out of human), I mean to live for 2 weeks out of town life))) hahaha)
Sergei: mainly science. And I play airsoft. I also go to gym when my health allows me (not so often). Spent some time playing Diablo on PC J But no interests can compare to my love to music.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Sergei: thank you all our listeners for support! You motivate us to move forward and continue with our passion. It is really hard work we do and we give it away for free, so I hope you at least will go and put like under our last album on Youtube ;)

Siniestro Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

Since the release of Revelations in Mayhem, we have been busy with touring. We’ve done shows in Spain, Germany, Belgium, Czech Rep and here in Sweden as well. In all this chaos we also had to find a new bass player, since our old dude decided to jump off the Siniestro train, but everything worked out extremely well, as we got our friend Mr. Bass Riot Joel to jump on board instead.

2.In July you had released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

We have never tried to fit into a specific genre or style. Instead we go with the feel of the moment and for us that usually is a wild breed of black metal mixed with thrash and punk but it's always full of passion, aggression and honesty as we leave our Siniestro mark on our product. I think our latest album had a bit more of a black metal vibe to it than the previous one called Oppression of the Sunlight, which had a bit more punk feeling to it, but that's how Siniestro works. We create music that is present in this time and moment of how we feel.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music?

Our lyrics contain a lot of anger and hatred towards different things going on around our personal life, but also worldwide issues as religion, corrupt media and whatever might cross our minds.

4.Originally the band was called 'Graverape Ritual' what was the decision behind the name change and also the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Siniestro'?

That is a misunderstanding. Graverape Ritual and Siniestro are two totally different bands. Sebastian (Drums) and me (Linus, guitars, vocals) played in Graverape Ritual but we left in 2011 'cause we felt that we wanted to do something else by ourselves that didn’t fit into the other band, so there was no change of name or anything like that. Siniestro is something else. The name came from Sebastian who is from Chile so he asked me: why not a Spanish name? In English it means „sinister“ and it sounds great and fits into our style of music.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

I think that our last show as opener for Destruction in Stockholm was a fantastic show, but its hard to choose a specific show as the best. In CZ we played small clubs and that was totally insane also. Just as the shows in Spain for example. For us it doesn’t matter if it is a small club or a big stage. We just go on 100% every time and that is why a lot of people like us, I think. It's always the energy and passion that reflect our stage performance.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

In May we are going to Czech Rep, Slovakia and Austria and in September we are going to Bulgaria and Romania. We are also planning dates in Germany, Italy, Bosnia, Serbia and here in Sweden but it has not yet been confirmed as we speak.

7.The last album was released on 'Bleeding Heart Nihilist Productions', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

BHN is run by Alex Cess, who I met at a club in Berlin a few years ago. We drank some booze and talked shit and realized that we were into the same music and attitude, so we kept in touch after that. I told him that I just started a new band called Siniestro and after he listened to some demos he told me that he really liked the stuff and asked us if we were interested to release something on his label. Alex is a great guy and lets us create what we want and believes in and supports us 100%, so that means a lot to us.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of extreme metal?

Wherever we go and wherever we play, there are always people coming up to us and ask us when we will come back, so that is amazing. We are extremely proud and happy to play for everyone everywhere. As we like to mix thrash, punk and black metal, it's really cool to see both punks and metal heads in the same mosh pit at our shows. That is exactly what Siniestro is about. A bunch of misfits of society getting together and having a good time.

9.Are any of the band members currently involved with any other bands or musical projects these days?

All of us have different projects going on but to name a few of them, Sebastian plays thrash metal with Terminal Prospect and he is a frequently hired drummer for various studio recordings and live performances etc. Joel is a busy guy playing with Ztringtrosa and Adrenaline Rush and I (Linus) also play with the black metal band IXXI.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We are always going to create what we feel like presently in our time. We have started the pre-production of our next album and it will be even darker and more chaotic than the last one, I can tell you already. Since we have Joel on bass now it really feels like a dream team and we are really looking forward into the future.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Our main influence comes from the old heroes such as Slayer, Motörhead, Pantera etc., but also some more acoustic stuff like Johnny Cash has always had a big impact. We really like GG Allin also. And don't forget Burzum, Dissection etc. There are so many great bands and artists out there to get inspired from. Old and new. There are too many to mention.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

Even though music takes a big space and time in all of our lives, there is also other things that are important to reflect on and respect like family and friends. When we go into Siniestro mode it's 100%, but it's also good to take some time off and relax and recharge the batteries for the next mission.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

A big thank you to every one of our fans out there. We salute you! Without you we wouldn’t exist! Respect!

Fight The Fight Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

We are a Metal/Hardrock band from Oslo, the capital of Norway.  It's a hard and heavy band with big hooks basically. Good looking fellas with the right attitude I would say.

2.Recently you have released an album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?

I would say it's pretty mixed with a lot of genres. We use a lot of elements from different types of styles. But the main goal with the album is to sound huge. You can find a lot of elements from big bands in there, in a nice little mix.

3.What are some of there lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

All the songs are pretty much about our band name. We are all fighters who fight individual fights, rather they are psychological, physical our everyday problems. These are problems everyone stumble upon in a lifetime. And that's mainly what this record is all about. Grow and learn as the journey through life continues, which can be at some times, a hell of a fight.

4.Originally the band was known as 'Faenskap', what was the decision behind the name change and also the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Fight The Fight'?

Well if you're not Norwegian, 'Faenskap' is a really hard name to pronounce and to understand. I bet you struggled to pronounce it when you first read it. We wanted to hit a larger group of people with our music, and felt Fight the Fight was a suiting bandname for our band personality.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

That's really hard to answer, because it's been so many, and every time we play live, we learn new things. And we are getting better and better for each time.
Our stage performance could be described as hard and aggressive, but also sweet.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

Not tours I'm allowed to talk about, but I promise you there will be some stuff up very soon!

7.The new album was released on 'Indie Recordings', are you happy with the support that they have given you so far?

Yeah, we love working with Indie. They are great people and they do a hell of a job. Definitely looking forward to work more with them in the future.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of metal?

It has been good. It's been a good response from people all of the world. Specially spanish talking countries, which I feel is a good thing. Because it's cool to connect with people so far away from what you're used to. That's the kind of magic we live for.

9.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Time will tell, as we are getting older, so will our music progress. I think we're only gonna go up from where we are now. We have a lot of unspent talent we would release in the future, music vise.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

There have been a lot of bands we've been influences by, growing up. Everything from Black Sabbath to In Flames. Whether it's new or old music, doesn't really matter. Everything that leaves a mark in our hearts and souls becomes a huge inspiration in the end.
I listen to a lot of Radiohead right now. I got my phases where I get obsessed with bands our artists, where they become my only music inspiration for that brief time. Maybe it's me who does that. Who knows.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

We all like to work out, so you'll find us in the gym if we're not making music.
I personally is really interested in art and history. So that also is a big hobby of mine.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Stay tuned BlackenedDeathMetalZine, you don't wanna miss out on this!
