The Chosen/Resistance Leading To Strength/Heidens Hart Records/2022 Full Length Review

 


  The  Chosen  are  a  duo  from  the  Netherlands  that  plays  a  blackened  form  of  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "Resistance  Leading  To  Strength"  which  was  released  by  Heidens  Hart  Records.


  A  very  fast  and  aggressive  thrash  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  influenced  by  both  the  first  and  second  wave  era's  of  the  genre  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  melody.


  Synths  can  also  be  heard  in certain  sections  of  the  recording  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  some  tremolo  picking  also  being  added  into  some  of  the  faster  riffing  at  times  as  well  as  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark y et  melodic  style.


  The  Chosen  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  black  and  thrash  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of t heir  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Paganism,  War  and  History  themes.


  In  my  opinion  The  Chosen  are  a  very  great  sounding  blackened  thrash  metal  duo  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Geysers  Of  Soil"  "When  The  Dust  Settles"  "Upon  The  Threshold  Of  The  Black  Gate"  and  "Wolfhound  -  Dragontank".  8  out  of  10.

Defiant/Vanguards Of Misrule/2022 EP Review

 


  Defiant  are  a  band  from  Croatia  that h as  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  blackened  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2022  ep  "Vanguards  Of  Misrule".


  Spoken  word  parts  which  also  return  on  later  songs  start  off  the  ep  before  going  into a  very  fast  and  brutal  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  blast b eats.  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  death  metal  growls  and  black  metal  screams  while  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing  at  times  and  the  music  also  mixes  in  both  modern  and  old  school  influences.


  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  chaotic  yet  melodic  style.  Tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of t he  faster  riffing  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  one  track  also  introducing  clean  playing  onto  the  recording  and  the  ep  also  closes  with  a  cover  of  Fields  Of  Nephilim's  "Dawnrazor".


  On  this  recording  Defiant  remains  true  to  the  blackened  style  of  death  metal  that  they  have  established  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  supernatural,  religion  and  perversion  themes.


  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Defiant  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackened  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Dii  Inferni"  and  "Expulsion  Of  The  Triumphant  beast".  8  out  of  10.

Elegeion Interview

 

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?


The album was only released a couple of months ago, and since then we've been working on filming and editing the new music video for the track "The Blazing Tempest", which officially launched on 17th August (https://youtu.be/Y06s1_tR8xI), releasing new merch and we're also setting up new backing tracks in preparation for live shows, and trying our best to promote the album as much as possible.


 


2.A few months back you had released a new album, musically how doe sit differ from the stuff you have released in the past?  


It's not too different from past recordings, really.  The album is more akin to the first EP and the first album in terms of style.  It still uses the same formula of blending light with dark, i.e. Growls and female voice, acoustic and string passages and dark doomy riffs.  Song go for as long as they go for, following feeling, and not restricted to time.  Lyrically the music has taken on a more aggressive and sardonic than previously, however with about 17 years of things on our minds festering away, the album became more of a pressure release of past and more recent thoughts and feelings.


 


3.This is also your first release in 10 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?


Its the first album in 17 years, and the first release since our single "Reignstorm" (https://youtu.be/4PraYSxM9LM) released at the end of 2010.  During that time frame, I did the usual things you might do in their late 20s / early 30s - start a family and provide for them, etc. but I also travelled the world living in Africa, UK and Middle East for almost a decade in total, with lots of European travel in between.  Once returning to Australia, I re-formed the band in 2018 and it took several years to find the right members, rehearse then write and record new songs.  It had been so long since I had even picked up a guitar that it took a while to get back in "the zone".


 


4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music and also how would you describe your progress  as songwriters over the years?


I would not really say that I have progressed too much as a songwriter, but I now know exactly what I want in terms of production quality, and will try not to compromise.  I would say the aim for the album was to regress back to the style I created when I was 18 to 24 years old, i.e. the early Elegeion style, which to me is the true style of the band.  Doing this was pretty easy as I am technically no better a player than back then (and still use the same old guitar!), and I still love writing long meaningful songs, that traverses both darkness and light.


 


As for lyrical topics and subjects, the album covers such subject matters as: The hypocrisy and forcefulness of religion, coming to terms with being the victim of violence experienced in past relationships, protest and the standing up for one's rights, the "Black Summer" bushfires of 2019/20 in Australia and most recently the pandemic and its revelations on the human condition and character.


 


5.Wha tis the meaning and inspiration behind the name ‘Elegeion’?


Elegeion is an ancient Greek word describing a sad and mournful song or oration given at a funeral.  I recently found in an 1867 dictionary that it meant “a funeral poem”.  I first stumbled across the work back in the early 90s in the liner notes of a collection of classical songs, and the name stuck, eventually becoming the band’s name due to it aligning with our lyrical direction of the time.


 


6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?


The gatefold cover art is the culmination of all the separate artworks inside the album booklet.  Inside the booklet, we commissioned an artist to draw a picture for each track, with the cover being a combination of all separate themes.  The main character on the cover is the girl depicted in the booklet for the song “Plight of the Heretic”.  In the booklet she is blindfolded and shackled in chains, led by others.  On the front cover she can see, and is free to choose her own path, which symbolises being free from the shackles of institutionalised religion.


 


7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?


Haha, interesting question!  We’ve only played two live shows in the band’s 27 year history!  In Melbourne and Sydney.  Our Melbourne show was our best, as the venue was sold out.  All I can say now is that we’re preparing to play live once more and hopefully do more shows in more countries than before.


 


8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?


Our plans are simply to be ready to play live which would be a great achievement for us. 


 


9.The new album was self released but you have worked with a label before in the past, are you open to working with another label again in the future?


Yes it was self released.  We have been on several labels in the past and we're open to working with labels again in the future however it would all depend on the deal the label has to offer.  Regardless, it has performed beyond our expectations for a small independent release from an obscure band.


 


10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black, doom and gothic metal?


The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive to date.  We've had over 6000 views on YouTube since May 1 (https://youtu.be/YijlYmqtHYg) which for us is fantastic.  The new Music Video is doing well and we've had a lot of messages and emails with great feedback.  Its been great to hear from old fans from the 90s and 2000's who have been patiently waiting over a decade for this album, and so flattering to know they are still wanting to hear our new music. 


 


11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?


Into the future we will be heading in a similar direction however probably a little more maturation in our song writing.  I have already written another full album that we're demoing and writing lyrics for, so a follow up album may not be too far away!


 


12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?


In the beginning, I really had only a handful of influences: My Dying Bride, Henryk Gorecki, the 3rd and the Mortal and diSEMBOWELMENT, plus many many riffs I had written for my Black Metal band Greydawn before Elegeion started.  In '95, I started writing music for Elegeion by slowing down my old Black Metal riffs to down stroke picking only, which is now characteristic of the DSBM style, so I guess early DSBM bands (before the DSBM term was coined) like Abyssic Hate, Burzum's Filosofem and more recently the band NONE would be not necessarily influences, but riffs and a song style that I have an affinity with and listen a lot to.   At the moment I am listening to the old guard as always, like Profanatica, Draconian, Saturnus, Samael (old), Sepultura (old), Havohej, Belial, Shape of Despair, Swallow the Sun, Katatonia, Vahrzaw, Bathory and newer bands like Imminence, Oceans of Slumber, Forest of Shadows and None.

For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?


 


We're a blackened death metal band from the northern part of Sweden formed in 2017 and have so far released two demos. And we're just about to release our first full length album this September titled 'Covenant of Death'.


 


So far you have released a demo and a full length, musically how do they both differ from each other?


 


Not quite, we have released two demos and they're both in the same vein musically, but the latter one has better songwriting and we put more work in the production.


 


What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?


 


The usual topics are often about death, darkness, and anti-religion.


 


I know that the band's name means 'agony' in Swedish, how does this name fit in with the musical style that you play?


 


We wanted something different when it came to the name of the band, and since we're from Sweden we decided on a Swedish name. The name suits our musical style well as it reflects in the lyrics as well in the music.


 


Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?


It is done by an American artist that goes under the name 'Misanthropic Art', he also did the cover for our second demo and our current logo. 


 


What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?


 


We have had the fortune of opening for some very good bands as Naglfar, Entombed A.D and Merciless. The Merciless gig stands out because it was our debut gig and the most memorable one to date. We try to channel the topic of our songs and the atmosphere of the music in an energetic and chaotic way on stage. 


 


Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?


 


Not as of this moment, no. We hope to get out and book some shows in the near future.


 


The new album was released on 'Majestic Mountain records' a label that is mostly full of stoner and doom metal bands while your musical style is completely different, where do you feel you fit in on the label?


 


We got contacted by 'Majestic' and noticed right away that we would stand out musically on their roster, but we don't see that as a problem at all. They have been very supportive and professional from day one, and we couldn't be happier.


 


On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black, death and thrash metal?


 


People from a lot of different countries has reached out to us and the reactions has been overwhelmingly positive to the demos and the latest single from the upcoming album. Now with a label backing us we of course look forward to reaching a lot more people in the future. 


 


Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?


 


We're currently working on new material, and even though we're in the early stages, the new material has more of a black metal feel than our previous songs which has alot of death and thrash influences.


 


What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?


 


We are mainly influenced by older bands in the black and death genres such as Dissection, Morbid Angel and Marduk.  Some of the newer bands we're listening to are Tribulation, Gatecreeper and Ultra Silvam.

Rick Massie/Guided To An Imperfect Light/2022CD Review

 


  Rick  Massie  is  a  solo  artist  from  the  Yukon  territory  of   Canada   that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  doom  metal,  progressive  and  hard  rock  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2022  album  "Guided  To  An  Imperfect  Light"  which  will  be  released  in  September.


  A  very  distorted  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  synths  also  bring  in  elements  of  progressive  rock.  Clean  playing  can  also be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  album  also  have  a very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  clear  vocals  are  also  utilized  at  times.


  Black  metal s creams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  while  the  slower  sections  of the  songs  also  show  an  influence  of  doom  metal.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a small  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  lot  of  melody  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length. 


  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  the  mus8ic  also  mixing  in  touches  of  mainstream  hard  rock  at  times  as  well  as  some  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  orchestra  sounds  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  one  song  also  introduces  death  metal  growls  into  the  music.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  unexpected  darkness  and  sadness,   the  power  of  positivity  and  love. 


  In  my  opinion  Rick  Massie  is  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black,  doom  metal,  progressive  and  hard  rock  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  artist.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Counting  The  Stars"  and  "Unity".  8  out  of  10.

Mayhemic/The Darkest Age/Awakening Records/2022 Compilation Album Review

 


  Mayhemic  are  a  band  from  Chile  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  blackened  form  of  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  compilation  album  "The  Darkest  Age"  which  will b e  released  on  August  26th  by  Awakening  Records.


  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  compilation  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Elements  of  thrash  metal  can  also be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with  the  faster  sections  of t he  songs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.


  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  music  is  also very  heavily  influenced  by  the  first  wave  era  of  the  genre.  The  songs  also  take  an  80's  style  and  mixes  them  with  a  more  modern  day  aggression  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  remaining  very  true  to  an  old  school  style.


  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  melody  at  times  as  well as  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing   and  the  compilation  closes  with  Kreator  and  Tormentor  covers..  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  evil  and  Anti  Christianity  themes.


  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collection  from  Mayhemic  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackened  thrash  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Beyond  Hell"  "Mortuary  Feast  Of  Skeletons"  "Burn  The  Cross"  and  "Tormentor".  8  out  of  10.

Acausal Intrusion/Seeping Evocation/I, Voidhanger Records/2022 Full Length review

 


  Acausal  Intrusion  are  a  duo  from  the  United  States  that  plays  a  very  dark  and  sinister  mixture  of  black,  doom  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "Seeping  Evocation"  which  will b e  released  in September  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records.


  A  very  dark  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  album  while  also  adding  in  some   horror  movie  style  keyboards.  Clean  playing  is  also  added  on  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  and  at  times  the  music  also  goes  into  a  very  technical  direction.


  Death  metal  growls  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  dissonant  sounding  along  with  some  black  metal  screams  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording  and  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  elements  of  doom  metal.


  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  one  of  the  tracks  also  being  an  acoustic  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Chaos,  Occultism  and  Lovecraftian  themes.


  In  my  opinion  Acausal  Intrusion  are  a  very  great  sounding  technical  and  dissonant  mixture  of  black,  doom  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  duo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Formless  Conjoining  Chaos"  "Nythra  Kthunae  Atazoth"  and  "Clairvoyant  Quantums".  8  out  of  10.


        


    

Sacrilegia/Sold Under Sin/Invictus Productions/2022 EP Review

 


  Sacrilegia  are  a  band  from  Ireland  that h as  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  blackened  form  of  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  ep  "Sold  under  Sin"  which  will  be  released  in  September  by  Invictus  Productions.


  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  ep  before  going  into  a  heavier  thrash  metal  direction  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.


  A  lot  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  80's  and  early  90's  while  also  mixing  in  a  more  modern  day  aggression.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  also  remain  very  true  to  a  melodic  yet  old  school  style  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  whole  recording  on  sticks  to  a  heavier  direction,  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  on  the  closing  song.


  On  this  ep  Sacrilegia  remain  true  to  the  blackened  thrash  metal  style  that  they  have  established  on  their  previous  release.  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Anti  Christianity  and  Nihilism  themes.


  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Sacrilegia  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackened  thrash  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Cimmerian  Dawn"  and  "The  Squirming  Hyperions".  8  out  of  10.

  Elegeion  are  a b and  from  Australia  that  plays  an  atmospheric  mixture  of  black,  doom  and  gothic  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2022  album  "Plight  Of  The  Heretic".

Dreadnought/The Endless/Profound Lore Records/2022 Full length Review

 


  Denver,  Colorado's  Dreadnought  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  progressive  mixture  of  post  black  and  doom  emtal  with  elements  of  folk,  jazz  and  classical  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "The  Endless"  which  will b e  released  on  August  26th  by  Profound  Lore  Records.


  Clear  vocals  and  clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  while  keyboards  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  post  rock  elements  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  black  metal  screams  are  also  mixed  into  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs.


  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  percussions  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  tribal  feeling  when  they  are  mixed  into  the  music.  The  slower  sections  of t he  songs  are  also  heavily  rooted  in  doom  metal  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.


  Some  tracks  also  show  influences  of  folk,  jazz  and  classical  which  also  takes  the  recording  into a  more  diverse  direction.  Clayton  Cushman  of  the  Flight  of  Slepinar  also  adds  synths  on  some  of  the  tracks  and  the  whole  album  also  sticks  to  a  slower  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  everlasting  struggle  between  human  light  and  suffering.


  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Dreadnought  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  progressive  and  post  black  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Worlds  break"  and  "The  Paradigm  Mirror".  8  out  of  10.

Forlesen/Black Terrian/I, Voidhanger Records/2022 Full Length Review

 


  Forlesen  are  a  band  from  Portland,  Oregon  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of      post  black,  doom  metal,  dark  ambient  and  slowcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "Black  Terrian" which  will  be  released  in  October  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records.


  Ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  Elements  of  doom  metal  can  also be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  the  vocals  also  being  done  mostly  in  a  clean  style  and  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.


  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are utilized  they  are  also  done  in a   very  melodic  post  metal  style  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.  Grim  black  metal  screams  can  also b e  heard  at  times  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a very  powerful  sound  to  them.


  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  female  vocals  onto  the  album.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark themes.


  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Forlesen  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  post  black,  doom  metal, d ark  ambient  and  slowcore,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Strega"  and  "Saturnine".  8  out  of  10.

Imperathron Interview

 


1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?


FOV: First of all, thank you for your interest John. IMPERATHRON is a blackened death metal band formed in 2020, in Chile, two members from Santiago and one from Osorno, in the south of the country.


From a very young age we came working Cristian and I, each one by his side with projects in other bands already dead these days, we had a great arsenal of riffs and a way of composing based on empiricism, when we put them together there was a good chemistry between what we did as guitarists and the way of perceiving music, the gunpowder was building up a long time ago. Later, Alfredo “Bizarrvs” joined our brotherhood, with bass and voices, he also adds percussion, he owns Greyhound Recording Studios, he is a great musician, very versatile, he was the spark that was missing from the accumulated gunpowder.


For our first demo work “Mercy for the Despicable”, we worked on 4 songs with the tools we had at hand, without a priori dogmatic style, totally independent and working in absolute silence, it sounds “cliche”, but the music just flowed. We put the result of this on two web platforms and almost immediately offers began to arrive to produce it physically, most from outside the country. It was a kind of experiment, since we didn't know what would really happen, we weren't looking for anything, no we wanted to knock on any door, or do "lobby". It was a trial by fire. We were surprised at how well received our work was, considering the sheer number of brutal and virtuous bands emerging every day.


We finally decided on Iron Blood and Death Corporation, there was a very good communication from the beginning, they achieved a high quality result that surprised us. At this time we signed with Vargeist Records who have trusted our work, they are quite professional, selective in what they are looking for and have a huge propaganda machine, we have the best expectations.


2.In August you have your first full length coming out, musically how does it differ from your previous demo?


Bizarrvs: Musically, it follows the same line of the previous work, adding two new songs, adding an intro to the song 'The Human Must Be Overcome' and polishing the musical production by me at Greyhound Recording Studios.


3. A lot of your lyrics cover war, death and stoic philosophy, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?


FOV: Since man is man art and death have been inseparable lovers, The doubt of what is hidden under the skin, death is the only thing that is truly sensible. I think that art in general is the best thing we can leave behind before death comes looking for us, art is immortal and transcendental (creative force), and it gives something tiny and ephemeral of that privilege to those who create it.


We are not worshipers of death in a basic, materialistic, morbid sense, and exalted with mystical/ritualistic clothing and imagery, or anything of that childishness, whoever becomes obsessed with that "way", I think deep down fears death. In the end, death does not harm us, it frees us from the suffering of the expiration of life. It forces us to be/live.


Basically, Stoicism helps us to wait for death standing up and look at it with arrogance. Art and war feed each other, everything materialistic that man creates at the same time ends up extinguishing it, art can do that more slowly, it is superior to whoever creates it, since it extends its breath. War as a material warlike conflict is only the lowest projection, a pale shadow, ruinous dispossession of interior battles of man against himself that will be repeated in eternal return.


4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Imperathron'?


FOV: IMPERATHRON is a name made up of Emperor/Throne, it is the throne that reigns, this throne is in the castle/cathedral of our inner kingdom, it is the will to power “Der Wille zur Macht”, the eagerness to achieve desires, self-improvement, individualism, demonstration of vital force, also represents a process of expansion of creative energy, this internal force is the foundation of nature, the challenge is to try to master and develop this vital power to a certain degree, that depends on each one, it is a daily battle against our enormous weaknesses as human beings. Eros/Thanatos in their fight. Get rid of the weight of the slave/herd morality, free yourself and watch from the top of this throne, even if this freedom is paid for with physical death.


5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?


Bizarrvs: The work presented for “Mors Est Veritas” is an original painting in layered oil technique, 40x40 cm format. It was painted by FOV, our guitarist. The primary concept of this work is the triumph of death as the engine of transcendental creation, creative fire, "wisdom" in the Greek myth of (Prometheus), embodied by the winged skull (origin of ideas about bone pillars), inheritance of the representation of Thanatos, Memento Mori, "remember that you will die", prevailing over La Paz, understood as the non-will, inaction, typical of weak men or in our disastrous "moral pacifist" times, the fear of confronting our fears, submissive immobility represented by the iconic white dove of the Judeo-Christian tradition. There is a carnal link between these concepts, which represents Eros as the drive for life (desire for transcendence), and Thanatos as the drive for death/Chaos, spreading his wings, covering this eternal dome with shadows.


6.Has the band done any live shows or open to the idea?


Bizarrvs: In Imperathron we set ourselves the first goal of releasing our first work through a label and we already have two, and the idea as a second instance is to be able to play the songs recorded live, without a doubt. However, for that we need a capable drummer committed to the band to be able to perform live with a full band.


7.So far the band has worked with 'Iron, Blood & Death Corporation' and 'Vargheist Records', do you feel these labels have been very helpful when it comes to getting your music out there heard?


Bizarrvs: Absolutely, 'Iron, Blood & Death Corporation' has helped us a lot when it comes to positioning the band in the Latin American market, being a Mexican label from one of the most important countries on the scene. Regarding 'Vargheist Records', the reception has been very good in the North American market, considering that the album will only be released at the end of August, and the specialized media have already begun to speak positively of this new work and this new alliance.


8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and death metal?


Bizarrvs: The reaction has been good, as we have received good comments by mail and on platforms such as Bandcamp and YouTube, mostly from North America and Europe.


FOV: Despite the short time we've been working on this band and analyzing the hundreds of comments and reactions among fans of death and Black metal, the reactions have been quite positive in all aspects, both musical (which is the main thing), as well as the concept. metaphysical and artwork. The congregation that enjoys this type of proposal is very small, which makes it valuable. We don't compose thinking of anyone, less of the masses, they are always wrong.


9.Are any of the band members currently involved with any other bands or musical projects these days?


Bizarrvs: Particularly I have been working together with my brothers from 'Degotten' on bass and second voices, in addition to the musical production of the last two works, the Split with the German band Prosatanos, entitled 'Demonic Fornication' and the EP titled 'Todeshymne'. The same happens with 'Maniaco', I'm in charge of the bass, vocals and musical production of the second LP that we hope to record this year. Regarding my musical project Grisvelos, we are just working on the rehearsals for our first presentation of the album 'Desperatio' that I composed and produced in 2020. In addition, I was in charge of the bass and the production of the second homonymous EP of 'Inhuman Entity' and the bass from the full length of 'Worship the Pestilence' called 'In Time of Plagues and Obscurity'.


10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?


Bizarrvs: We will maintain the extremity of the sound already created by Cristian and FOV, understanding that art is a process that is inevitably constantly changing, but nevertheless already has a central core.


11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?


Bizarrvs: Basically the 90s american death metal sound, with bands like Morbid Angel, Immolation & Hate Eternal, and the European counterparts, with bands like Luciferion, At The Gates & Belphegor.

Vånda/Covenant Of Death/Majestic Mountain Records/2022 Full Length Review

 


   Vånda  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  death  and  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "Covenant  Of  Death"  which  will  be  released  in  September  by  majestic  Mountain  Records.


  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  musical  direction  while  some  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  and  the  riffs  also  mix  in  a  great  amount  of  thrash  metal  elements.


  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  some  death  metal  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.


  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  of  the  faster  riffing  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  tremolo  picking  as  well  as  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  and  a  later  track  is  also  a  piano  orientated  instrumental,  acoustic  guitars  can  also b e  heard  briefly  towards  the  end.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  violent  themes.


  In  my  opinion  Vånda  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black,  death  and  thrash  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Light  The  Fire"  "World  Reborn"  and  "Goddess  of  Death".  8  out  of  10.

Diabology/Father Of Serpents/Dissonant Hymns Records/2022 Full Length Review

 


  Diabology  are  a  band  from  Los  Angeles,  California  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  goes  for  more  of  a  blackened  thrash  metal  direction  with  elements  of  doom  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "Father  of  Serpents"  which  will b e  released  in  October  by  Dissonant  Hymns  Records.


  Snake  sounds  and  clean  playing  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  mixture  of  clear  singing  and  growls.  Elements  of  thrash  metal  can  also b e  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  all of  the  musical  instruments  on the  recording  also having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.


  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  also  remain  true  to  an  old  school  extreme  metal  style  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  show  an  influence  of  doom  metal.  Back  up  shouts  are  also  added  on  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  the  music  also  mixing  in  touches  of  first  wave  black  metal.


  One  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  classical  guitars   along  when  the  music  finally  speeds  up  on  a  couple  of  songs  a  small  amount  of  blast beats  can  also  be  heard  along  with  clean  playing  also  making  a  brief  return  as  the  album  progresses  as  well  as  one  song  also  being  an  instrumental,  the  tracks  also  mix  in  a  great  amount  of  modern  metal  touches  the  update  the  sound  for  the  current  era..  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  mythology,  fantasy,  social  issues  and  having  sex  with  cockroaches.


  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Diabology  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  doom,  death  and  thrash  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "father  of  Serpents"  "Eat  My  Heart  Out"  "March  To  Sea"  and  "Lighthouse  Hymn".  8  out  of  10.
