Cryptae/Nightmare Traversal/Sentient Ruin Laboratories/2020 Full Length Review

 

  Netherlands  duo  Cryptae  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  their  experimental  mixture  of  black,  death  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Nightmare  traversal"  which  will  be  released  in  October  by  Sentient  Ruin  Laboratories.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  dissonant  musical direction  while  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  guttural  death  metal  growls.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  along  with  some  distorted  sounding  melodies  also  being  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  music  also  gets  very  experimental  sounding  at  times.  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also  brings  elements  of  black  metal  into  the  songs  along  with  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  showing  an  influence  of  doom  metal,  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  the  closing  track.

  On  this  album  Cryptae remains  true  to  the  experimental  mixture  of  black,  doom  and  death  emtal  that they  have  established  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  lo-fi  while  the  lyrics  cover  dystopian  and  horror  themes  inspired  by  video  games. 

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Cryptae  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental,  black,  doom  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Nightmare  Traversal"  and  "Cronos".  8  out  of  10.

Cryptae/Vestigal/Sentient Ruin Laboratories/Tarturus Records/2019 EP Review

  Cryptae  are  a  duo  from  the  Netherlands  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  tihs  recording  plays  an  experimental  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  ep  "Vestigal"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Sentient  Ruin  Laboratories  and  Tartarus  Records.

  Drum  beats  start  off  the  ep  while  the  only  track  that  is  presented  on  the  recording  is  over  18  minutes  in  length.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  experimental  and  avant  garde  sounding  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  song  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.

  At  times  the  music  gets  very  dissonant  sounding  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  guttural  sounding  death  metal  growls.  Elements  of  black  metal  can  also be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with t he  song  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  influences  of  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  music  and  as  the  track  progresses  guitar  leads  are  also  added  onto  the  recording  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  On  this  recording  Cryptae  remains  true  to  their  experimental  and  dissonant  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  surreal  horror,  insanity,  delusions,  destruction  and  evil  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Cryptae  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental  and  dissonant  blackened  death  emtal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  8  out fo  10.

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
René came up with the idea of the band after slipping and bumping his head while standing on his toilet to hang a clock.

2.So far you have released a demo, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording?
It sounds like a Twisted Mass Of Burnt Decay As Autopsy would say it. But hey, why describe what you can hear yourself:

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
Death, madness, the cosmos. It's death metal, what did you expect?

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Cryptae'?
See question 1. For those who wonder: We pronounce it as crypt-aye (like aye in Canada).

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?
We just started with this demo. So far no shows.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
We need to write some more first!

7.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your  music by fans of experimental, black and death metal?
It has been overwhelmingly positive. We just wanted to record and release this demo ourselves, but before we knew it Mattia of Sentient Ruin mailed us to ask us if we were interested in joining the roster. Of course we said yes and he's doing a great job!

8.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

9.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
Our demo is 1 month old at this moment. We haven't had the time to work on anything else yet.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Most of the times we're too busy with out own bands/projects, but we listen to a very diverse range of things. We're both very fond of Macabre, the album Exploiting Dysfunction by Cephalic Carnage and former Dying Fetus drummer Kevin Talley.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?
More music.

Cryptae/Self Titled/Sentient Ruin Laboratories/2017 EP Review

  Cryptae  are  a  band  from t he  Netherlands  that  plays  an  avant  garde,  dissonant  and  experimental  mixture  of  black  and  death metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2017  demo  which  will  be  released  on December  21st  by  Sentient  Ruin  Laboratories.

  Drum  beats  along  with  some  noise  rock  elements  start  off  the  ep  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  brutal  direction  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  as  well  as  introducing  death  metal  growls  onto  the  recording.

  A  great  amount  of  black  metal  influences  can  also  be  heard  in  he  songs  along  with  a  few  screams  while  the  music  also  brings  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  influences  of  industrial  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  the music also  brings  in  a  lo-fi  atmosphere.

  Cryptae  plays  a  musical  style  that  is  mostly  rooted  in  dissonant  black  and death  metal  while the  experimental,  avant  garde,  industrial  and  noise  rock  elements  gives  the  songs  more  originality,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Cryptae  are  a  very  great  sounding  experimental,  dissonant  and  avant  garde  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Ventrum"  and  "Maze".  8  out  of  10.
