Woebegone Obscured/The Forestroamer/Aesthetic Death/2018 CD Review

  Woebegone  Obscured  are  a  band  from  Denmark  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  blackened  form  of  funeral  doom/death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "The  Forestroamer"  which  was  released  by  Aesthetic  Death.

  Nature  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  heavy  riffing  a  few  seconds  later while  clean  playing  is  also  utilized  at  times  along  with  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  being  very  heavily  rooted  in  funeral  doom  metal  as  well  as  some  atmospheric  synths  being  mixed  in  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs.

  A  great  amount  of  dark  and  depressive  sounding  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  deep  death  metal  growls  along  with  a  few  black  metal  screams  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Melodic  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times   while  all  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  along  with  one  of  the  later  tracks  being  a brief  instrumental  as  well  as  some  whispered  vocals  also be  used  briefly  and  as  the  album  progresses  female  vocals  are  also  added  into  the  music  and  some  songs  also  bring  in  elements  of  prog  rock  and  ambient.

  On  this  recording  Woebegone  Obscured  expand  on  their  blackened  style  of  funeral  doom/death  metal  by  adding  in  more  elements  of  ambient  and  progressive  rock,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  nature,  occultism,  melancholy  and  suicide  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Woebegone  Obscured  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  and  funeral  doom/death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Memory  And  The  Thought"  and  "The  Forestroamer".  8  out  of  10.

Woebegone Obscured/Deathscape MMXIV/Solitude Productions/2014 CD Review

  Woebegone  Obscured  are  a  band  from  Denmark  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and plays  a  blackened  form  of  funeral  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Deathscape  MMXIV"  which  was  released  by  Solitude  Productions.

  Dark  and  melodic  riffs  start  off  the  album  and  start  to  mix  in  with  a  very  heavy  style  of  funeral  doom  metal  and  most  of  the  songs  are  long  and  epic  in  length  and  also  bring  in  clean  sections  at  times  that  bring  an  ambient  feeling  to  the  recording  and  when  vocals  are  added  into  the  music  they  are  deep  death  metal  growls.

  Throughout  the  recording  there  is  a  great  mixture  of  both  clean  and  heavy  parts  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  grim  black  metal  screams  and  when  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  very  dark  and  melodic  sounding  and  clean  singing  can  also b e  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  also  gives  the  musical  more  of  an  operatic  feeling.

  Acoustic  guitars  can  be  heard  in  some  part s of  the  songs  and  some  of  the  tracks  also  bring  in  elements  of  ethereal  goth  music  and  they  also  bring  an  acoustic  track  before  returning  back  to  a  heavier  direction  when  they  go  into  their  cover  of  Bathory's  "Call  From  The  Grave"  which  they  also  give  more  of  a  doom /death  metal  vibe  and  they  close  the  album  with  a  cover  of  Dead  Can  Dance's  "Xavier".

  Woebegome  Obscured  creates  another  album  that  is  mostly  rooted  in  funeral  doom  but  also  mix  in  a  great  amount  of  black  metal  influences,  atmospheric  and  ambient  elements  to  create  their  own  musical  style,  the  production  sounds  very  powerful  while  the  lyrics  cover  Dark  Nature,  Occultism,  Melancholy  and  Suicide  themes.  

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Woebone  Obscured  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal  and  funeral  doom,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Catharsis  of  the  Vessel"  and  "Xavier".  8  out  of  10.

Woebegone Obscured/Marrow Of Dreams/I, Voidhanger Records/2013 CD Review

  Woebegone  Obscured  are  a  band  from  Denmark  that  plays  a  blackened  form  of  funeral  doom/death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  album  "Marrow  Of  Dreams"  which  was  released  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records.

  A  more  relaxed  ambient  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  more  heavy  and  melodic  direction  along  with  some  melancholic  elements  which   also  leads  up  to  a  mixture  of  clean  singing  and  growls  and  then  the  music really  starts  going  into  a  very  dark  funeral  doom  metal  direction  and  mixing  in  some  black  metal  screams.

  When  we  get  more  into  the  album  you  can  hear  clean  parts  and  acoustic  being  utilized at  times  along  with  small  amounts  of  spoken  word  parts  and  in  some  of  the  heavier  doom  metal  sections  melodic  guitar  leads  are  added  in,  the  band  brings  a  great  amount  of  emotion  and  sorrow  in  their  music  with  all  of  the  songs  being  long  epic  songs  that  remain  in  a  slower  direction.

  The  songs  on  the  album  have  a  great  amount  of  variety  to  them  with  some  influences  from  early  90's  U.K  doom/death  metal  beign  mixed  in  with  the  more  modern  and  darker  funeral  doom  metal  as  well  as  a  touch  of  grim  black  metal  and  the  singer  brings  in  a  great  mixture  of  growls,  screams  and  melodic  singing  which  also  makes  the  music  sound  more  progressive  and  original  sounding.

  Woebegone  Obscured  have  a  very  interesting  and  original  approach  to  blackened  funeral  doom/death  metal  bring  in  a  good  balance  between  heavy,  slow,  dark  and  melancholic  sounds  along  with  a  dark,  powerful  and  heavy  production  and  lyrics  that  cover  dark,  depressive  and  schizophrenic  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Woebogone  Obscured  are  a  very  great  sounding  blackened  funeral  doom/death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.   RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Vacuum  ocean"  and  "In  Suffering  Darkness  Dwell".  8/5  out  of  10.
