  Complexant  are  a  band  from  Australia  that  plays  a  blackened  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2026  album  "Apex"  which  will  be  released  in  July  as  a  joint  effort  between  Bleeding  Art  Collective  and  Blood  Blast  Distribution.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  brutal  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  death  metal  growls  mixed  in  with  some  black  metal  screams  while  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  at  times.

  Clear  singing  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of   the  tracks  while  the  album  also  adds  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Elements  of  deathcore  are  also  added  into  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  music  along  with  the  faster  riffing  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking.

   When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  the  instrumental  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  suffering,  violence  and  tyranny.

  In  my  opinion  Complexant  are  a  very  decent  sounding  mixture  of  black,  death  metal  and  deathcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "No  Angels  Weep"  "Heretical  Supremacy"  and  "No  Hope  For  Sanctuary".  7  out  of  10.

  Phasma  are  a  duo  from  Greece  that  plays  a  brutal  and  technical  mixture  of  black,  death  metal  and  deathcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Purgatory"  which  will  be  released  in  February  by  Transcending  Obscurity  Records.

  A  very  distorted  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  which  also  introduces  death  metal  growls  into  the  music.  Black  metal  screams  are  also  utilized  at  times  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in a   lot  of  brutal  blast  and  the  recording  also h as  its  technical  moments.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  vocals  also  get  very  guttural  at  times.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  also  remain  true  to  a  technical  style  along  with  the  faster  riffing  also  adding  in  a  good  amount  of  tremolo  picking,  throughout  the  album  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  A  couple  of  songs  also  adds in  a  small  amount  of  synths  and  elements  of  deathcore  are  also  added  into  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  acoustic  guitars  and  clean  are  also  added  on  the  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  purgatory  themes.    

  In  my  opinion  Phasma  are  a  very  great  sounding  brutal  and  technical  mixture  of  black,  death  metal  and  deathcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUD E "I"  and  "VI".  8  out  of  10.

Art Of Attrition/...And It Will End Forever/2024 EP Review

 

  Art  Of  Attrition  are  a  band  from  Alberta,  Canada  that  plays  a  very  technical  and  blackened  form  of  deathcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2024  ep  "...And  It  Will  End  Forever"  which  will  be  released  in  July.

  A  very  fast  and  brutal  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  while  the  vocals  bring  in  a  mixture  of  death  metal  growls  and  black  metal  screams.  Elements  of  deathcore  can  also  be  heard  in  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  recording  and  the  vocals  also  have  their  guttural  moments.

  Some  of  the  shouts  also  add  in  a  touch  of  metalcore  while  orchestration  is  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  The  music  also  has  its  technical  moments  in  both  the  riffs and  solos  along  with  some  pig  squeals  also  being  utilized  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  as  well  as  a  couple  of  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing,  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.  

  Art  Of  Attrition  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  a  very  technical  form  of  blackened  death  metal  and  mixes  it  with  deathcore  and  symphonic  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes.

Abolizion/Extraterran Biosphere/2021 Demo Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Hungary's  solo  project  Abolizion  which  continues  the  dissonant  and  blackened  style  of  death  metal  and  the  demo  was  self  released  in  2021  and  called  "Extraterran  Biosphere".

  Programmed  drum  beats  start  off  the  demo  along  with  some  synths  and  melodic  riffing  a  few  seconds  later.   Vocals  are  mostly  guttural  death  metal  growls  while  touches  of  black  metal  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  brutal  blast b eats.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  music  also  has  its  dissonant  moments  along  with  the  music  also  getting  very  experimental  sounding  at  times.  as  well  as  the  riffing  also  adding  in  elements  of  deathcore  and  slam  to  enhance  the  brutality,  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  ar e utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  On  this  recording  Abolizion  expands  on  his  blackened  death  metal  style  by  getting  more  experimental  and  mixing  in  other  brutal  metal  genres.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  science  fiction  and  horror  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Abolizion  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  experimental  blackened  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  demo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Human  Tissue  left  To  Rot  In  AN  Extreterrestial  Jungle".  8  out  of  10.

Fifth Ring Interview

 

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

        (Chris) It all started years ago when 3 young golden gods decided to bless the world with their tasty jams. The world was not ready. “You suck!” they screamed. “One string solos!” they bellowed. We bided our time and grew within the caverns of my moms basement until we became the insatiable abomination that is Fifth Ring. 
    (Zach) It’s like sex with a rhino, but the rhinos not really into it, ya know?

2.So far this year you have released an ep and a full length, musically how do they both differ from each other?

    (Chris) Dawn was more of an experiment, we were kind of just throwing ideas back and forth but the writing process was very similar for both. Recording Dawn taught us a lot about the recording process and I think Masochist took those ideas and doubled down on them. I think we just tried to make it heavier, darker, prettier, groovier etc.

    (Zach) what he said.

3.Most of the band members where also a part of 'Cthulu', what was the cause of splitting up the band and forming a new one and also did you have an interest in the writings of H.P Lovecraft back in those days?

        (Chris) We were all kids then (like 17 or so) and it was easy when we had no real responsibility but as time went on, life started taking priority in our lives. We read some of the Cthulhu mythos but honestly the lyrics had little to nothing to do with Cthulhu, we just thought it was a badass name for a band and we went with it. We actually had a short-lived project called Golgothan after Cthulhu. It was basically the same music but I think it was us trying to keep the band alive. But fast forward to now, we’ve figured out a system that allows us to set aside personal time to write music, the process is much more deliberate now.

    (Zach) Chris stole my favorite Thomas the tank engine train (James the red engine) and when he returned it it smelled like shit. It took a lot for me to forgive him for that.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

        (Chris) We’ve taken a similar approach to the lyrics with Masochist so it kind of varies. We would usually name the song based on the feelings it gave us, and made lyrics based off that. For example, The Snake reminds us of slithering, serpentine type movements. Zach took that and interpreted those ideas into his own lyrics. Very much back and forth ideas. Then you have songs like Lurking that have a more serious tone. But regardless the lyrics are still written to “flow” with the song. If it sounds good, we are gonna keep it. If not we make something else.

    (Zach) ALOT OF ANIMAL MOLESTATION!

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Fifth Ring''?

        (Chris) The “Fifth Ring” means the “void” and comes from The Book of Five Rings, written by Miyamoto Musashi. It basically describes the flow state that we have all experienced in some way, shape or form. It means avoiding over analyzing things and simplifying them to its core. If you’ve ever played a game or sport and felt like you were in the zone, that’s exactly it.

    (Zach) Don’t know, some nerd shit I’d assume.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

        (Chris) I made it with my bare hands i worked hard, slaved over a hot stove to cook it up, eat up.

        (Zach) No you fucking didn’t you phony.

7.The band members live in the United States and Taiwan, what impact does that have on the musical style that you play?

        (Chris) I think it allow us to isolate our writing when necessary and share with the other members when needed. What i mean is we can write our individual parts without distractions, and share them, receive feedback and mold it from there. Its like our parts are unique to each member and from there they are influenced/influencing other writing processes.

    (Zach) I moved away because Chris kept harassing me for my DVD collection of Thomas the Tank Engine season 6 (The best season).

8.Currently the band is unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

        (Chris) Not really but we’re not against it

        (Zach) Yes really!

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal and death core?

    (Chris) Every time i leave my house i have oceans of women swooning at my feet begging me to help play just 1 riff for them. It’s a sacrifice one of us has to make.

    (Zach) There he goes talking about the third graders at the playground again.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

 

    (Chris)We have no plans of stopping so I think we’re just gonna keep pushing and see what crazy stuff we can make, I think we are gonna focus on what sets us apart and double down on that.

    (Zach) I don’t  know…..Only Fans?

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

        (Chris) Funny, we never stopped listening to metal but i know collectively we all listen to much more than that. I know zach has always been influenced by Gorillaz. Big influences for me would include Suicide Boys and Shawn James but we’re also influenced a lot by video games, movies etc. nowadays I listen to a lot of different music but i think Chelsea Grin is making the best deathcore currently.

     (Zach) Metallica.

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

        (Chris) Thank you for the time, and I appreciate getting to answer some personal questions.

    (Zach) One time Chris shoved his hand into my Jizz sock and smelled his finger for a week claiming it smelled like strawberries.

  Touches  of  hardcore  and  deathcore  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  in  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  album.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  one  track  also  introducing  clear  vocals  into  the  music,  spoken  word  parts  can  also b e  heard  briefly.

  Cabal  plays  a  musical  style   that takes  black,  death  metal,  deathcore  and  djent  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  personal  themes.

  A  very  powerful  sounding  bass  guitar  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  heavier  and  brutal  guitar  riffing  a  few  seconds  later.  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls  while  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent amount  of  deathcore  elements  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  lot  of  brutal  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  A  small  amount  of  melody  is  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  music  also  gets  very  progressive  sounding  at  times.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  vocals  also  having  their  guttural  moments  as  well  as  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  keyboards.

Thirteen Bled Promises Interview

 

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

 

We have been busy preparing the release with Lacerated Enemy Records as well as taking care of the projects that were returning to play live right now after the live music break due to the pandemic in Spain.

 

2.A few months back you had released a new ep, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

 

Musically it is a natural progression in the sound of the band, as well as the conjunction of new influences and the desire to do something a little different. We have borrowed some brushstrokes from black metal as well as continuing to search through technical riffs always somewhat more dissonant.

 

3.With the exception of a single in 2019 this is also your first release since 2015, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

 

Since all the members of TBP are immersed in other musical projects, the new material took longer to compose, as well as the entrance to the studio, was delayed for more than half a year due to the pandemic. Likewise, we have never felt a real pressure to release material as soon as possible since we have always been a self-released and self-financed band, so the times were what they had to be. But now with the entry into Lacerated Enemy Records, we have in mind to work hard to get the new material ready soon.

 

4.A lot of your lyrics cover aliens, conspiracy theories and gore themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these topics?

 

Since we started the band we knew that we wanted to dedicate the theme of the lyrics to these issues since we are very fans of scifi culture and horror in all its aspects, cinema, literature, comic ... Also, some of us have had close experiences by family members with inexplicable situations, as well as letters sent with people who have had experiences and encounters that are difficult to explain.

 

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Thirteen Bled Promises'?

 

It really doesn't make any more sense than the literal meaning of the words that make up the name, we were young and we didn't think about things much.

 

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new ep cover?

 

Again, the artwork has been created by Martin de Diego Sabada, who created the previous covers except for the cover of the 2019 single. We have always been fascinated by his work and we have believed that he was the best artist to capture the theme of our lyrics. This time for the cover of 'Foundation', we travel from the medieval era of 'The Black Legend' to the future period in which the fight of aliens against the intraterrestrials of the TBP universe continues, with the founding of a new era.

 

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

 

Really for us each show is the same, we try to have the same good time and to leave the thousands or dozens of people who watch the show with the same feeling of brutality, heaviness and darkness. We believe that the important thing apart from the best possible execution of the songs live is to show an energy that people internalize and always want more.

 

8.The new ep was released on 'Lacerated Enemy Records', how would you compare working with this label or other labels you have been a part of in the past?

 

There is no comparison as Lacerated Enemy Records is our first label since TBP was created, so we are delighted to be part of the family and very excited about what we can achieve together.

 

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your newer music by fans of black and death metal?

 

We have noticed that the people who have always followed us have been more than satisfied with the new material, as well as detecting that we have generated curiosity in people who did not have us on the radar. This is difficult to measure "digitally" so we are looking forward to going back to giving live concerts and feeling the feedback better.

 

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are part of?

 

The truth is that the other projects are working quite well and allow us to grow as musicians as well as to be able to enjoy different musical styles. If you are curious, here are some of the names of these projects: Aversio Humanitatis, Oscuro Culto, Cathexia, Eternal Storm...

 

11.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

 

Definitely 2022 will be a year of hard work in the rehearsal room composing the new material, hopefully in 2023 he can be ready to record it. The direction of TBP musically as always will be the natural progression of the group's sound, seeking the speed, darkness and heaviness that we have always wanted to bring to the listener.

 

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are currently listening to nowadays?

 

Well, each of us have musical styles in common but also styles that are very different from each other. But to name a few, from extreme metal (black, tech death, osdm, funeral doom, nu metal), to rap, synthwave, jazz or classical music.

GoreThrone Interview

 

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

 We are from Grand Rapids Michigan and we are a four piece just 2 guitars, vocalist and drums no bass as of yet

2.So far you have released an ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording? 

We wanted it to be as heavy as possible alot of breakdowns and quick songs they are all around 2:30 minutes

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music? 

They range from a pack of wolves killing it's pray in alpha to how god has abandoned us in necropolis and Celestial Noose, and in grim our vocalists talks about his abusive stepfather

4.Originally the band was called 'Behold the Wicked', what was the cause of the name change and also the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'GoreThrone'?.

We had a lineup change and when we brought in our vocalists we decided to go more deathcore and needed something that sounded more brutal. The inspiration was just when you hear the name Gorethrone you get the image of just twisted dead bodies and that's what we are going for.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover? 

It represent the decent into hell and all the pain and anguish and dispare you would feel when you get there.

6.You got some live shows planned for the summer, what should we expect once you hit the stage?

 Our big thing is we put on a show we don't stand there and play we get in your face and even get into the pit with you, we see so many bands just standing there and playing which is cool but we want you to really feel us.

7.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest? 

Not at the moment but we wouldn't be against it if we feel they are going to bring us to the next level but otherwise we are doing pretty good doing it ourselves

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction bene to your music by fans of black metal and deathcore? 

Honestly we have been getting alot of Black metal fans from it we wouldn't think because Black metal is alot more melodic and doesn't have any breakdowns

9.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

 We are working on a full length right now, we already have four songs written and hoping to get it out by the end of the year. Our new stuff is going to be more technical we are going to have longer songs a few more solos.

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

 The drummer is a huge black metal fan so he is always giving us that and the vocalists is straight deathcore and I listen to alot of djent and progressive metal.

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

 Our drummer and rhythm guitarist are both into MMA and the rhythm guitarist used to be a fighter, and the singer is into twitch stream his handle is papazammy if you want to check him out.

Just be ready for us going for it later this year we are looking to set up our own show Gorefest which we are talking to bands and venues that are interested and be ready for our full length.

  GoreThrone  are  a  band  from  Grand  Rapids,  Michigan  that  plays  a  blackened  form  of  deathcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2021  ep  "The  Descension".  

  A  very  dark,  heavy  and  brutal  sound  starts  off  the  ep  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  blackened  screams  along  with  a  few  growls.  Deathcore  style  breakdowns  are  also  added  into  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats.

  Distorted  and  dark  sounding  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast parts  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  also  being  under  3  minutes  and  one  track  also  adds  in a  brief  use  of  clean  playing,  the  vocals  also  have  their  guttural  moments.

  GoreThrone  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  black  metal  and  deathcore  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the    lyrics  cover  darkness  and  war  themes.

The Impaler/A Fate Worse Than Death/2021 Full Length Review

 

  The  Impaler  are  a  band  from  Australia  that  plays  a  blackened  form  of  death  metal  with  elements  of  deathcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2021  album  "A  Fate  Worse  Than  Death"  which  will  be  released  on  February  19th.

  A  very  dark  and  atmospheric  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  before  adding  in  some  death  metal  growls  which  also  takes  the  music  into  a  heavier  direction.  Black  metal  growls  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording  along  with  some  elements  of  deathcore  being  added  into  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  brutal  sounding  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  one  of  the  tracks  also  introducing  clean  playing  onto  the  album.

  The  Impaler  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  black,  death  metal  and  deathcore  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  hateful  themes.

Ichor/Hadal Ascending/Unholy Conspiracy Deathwork/2018 Full Length Review

  Ichor  are  a  band  from  Germany  and  on  this  recording  have  evolved  into  more  of  a  blackened  death  metal  band  while  touches  of  their  deathcore  background  can  still  be  heard  at  times  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Hadal  Ascending"  which  will  be  released  in  December  by  Unholy  Conspiracy  Deathwork.

  A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with some  melodic riffing  also  being  utilized  at  times  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  death  metal  growls  as  well  as  the  faster  sections  of  the  music  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  brutal  sounding  blast  beats  and  the  solos  and  leads  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.

  At  times  the  music  gets  very  atmospheric  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  deathcore  elements  also  being  added  into  some  of  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  music  as  well  as  some  synths  also  being  added  onto  some  of  the  tracks  and  the  music  also  adds  in  a  lot  of  blackened  death  metal  influences  into  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  and  grim  screams  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  chants  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard.

  On  this  recording  Ichor  evolved  into  more  of  an  atmospheric  blackened  death  metal  band  while  touches  of  their  deathcore  past  can  still  be  heard,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  a  fictional  story  that  is  very  heavily  influenced  by  the  occult,  science  fiction,  horror  and  the  writings  of  H.P  Lovecraft.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording from  Ichor  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackened  death  metal  and  deathcore,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Tales  From  The  Depths"  "In  Ecstasy" "Architect  of  The  Portal"  and  "Conquering  The  Stars".  8  out  of  10.

  Nuisible  are  a  band  from  France  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  blackened  mixture  of  deathcore  and  crust  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Slaves And  Snakes"  which  will  be  released  on  September  21st  by  Deadlight  Entertainment.

  A  very  dark sounding  intro  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  the  music  also  mixing  in  elements  of  crust  and  hardcore.

  Vocals  are  mostly  angry  sounding  shouts  and  growls  while  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  using  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  as  well  as  some  black  metal  screams  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while   the  music  brings  in  elements  of  Swedish  style  death  metal  at  times  along  with  some  deathcore  style  breakdowns  also  being  utilized  in  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  and  keyboards  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  as  the  album  progresses  their  is  also  a  brief  use  of  melodic  chants.

  We  Are  Legion  are  a  band  from  Minnesota  that  plays  a brutal  mixture  of  blackened  death  metal,  deathcore  and  thrash and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  album  "Exit  Humanity"  which  was  released  by  ZeroBudget  Records.

  A  very  heavy  and  brutal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  death  metal  growls,  black  metal  screams  and  blast  beats  and  after  awhile  technical  guitar  solos  and  leads  become  a  huge  part  of  the  recording  along  with  some  deathcore  breakdowns  and  there  is  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  throughout  the recording.

  At  times  the  faster  sections  bring  in  a  very  heavy  black  metal  influence  and  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  amount  of  melody  coming  out  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  leads  and  the  band  manages  to  keep  mostly  everything  in  a  very  heavy  musical  direction  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  band  starts  bringing  in  the  energy  of  thrash  metal  and  a  couple  of  the  later  tracks  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  classical  guitars  along  with  an  instrumental  before  making  a  return  back  to  a  brutal  direction.

  We  Are  Legion  plays  a  style  of  blackened  death  metal  that  is  very  heavy  and  brutal  sounding  as  well  as  adding  in  elements  of  deathcore  and  thrash  into  their  musical  sound  while  also  having  a  technical  style  of  guitar  leads  which  also  make  their  music  more  diverse,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark,  violent  and  hateful  themes.

Blight House Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

We’ve been doing this for a year or so. We just wanted to do something really disgusting, frantic, and abusive. Our members are a bunch of fucking assholes, so it’s a miracle we have anything to show for it.

2.Recently you have released a new ep, can you tell us a little bit more about your musical sound?

A lot of the sound comes from the fact that we’re not especially dedicated to musicianship. So maybe you’re hearing weird keys or timings or something, but it’s not because we thought a lot about it; it’s because we almost never practice and really don’t give a shit. If we make a “mistake,” we don’t fix it—we just do it 4 more times and call it a song.

But, maybe for that reason, you hear a lot of genre crossing in the music, which I think makes for legitimately interesting music. You know, slam breaks with black metal trem picking on top and a lot of switching between vocal styles, from low gurgles to high shrieks to full voiced barking.

As for recording, we first tried to do it the “real” way. You know, use sample replacer on the drums, do a million guitar takes, and whatever. But it didn’t sound as terrifying as the original basement demos. So we stripped it back down to something more authentic and ultimately more terrifying.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

The usual stuff: gore, violence, fetishism, occultism, misanthropy.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Blight House'?

We were basically done recording, but we still didn’t have a name. We were going to go with the usual gore/death/grind type of name—you know, Latin words for medical procedures or something. But when we reflected on the sound—which is really a bricolage of genre elements—we figured we should go with something that wouldn’t pigeon hole us. So, we came up with Blight House because it sounded like it could be just about any kind of heavy band.

But it also has local resonances. We’re from Rhode Island, the Ocean State, where corny images of lighthouses are everywhere. But this is also the home of the industrial revolution. Most people just come and see the beaches and the mansions of the robber barons, they don’t see the depressing urban blight left by the demise of manufacturing here. The atmosphere for most residents isn’t cute lighthouses or gilded ballrooms, and that other atmosphere is part of what we represent.

5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage perfromance?

We’re usually too busy playing with our regular bands to go out as Blight House. Plus, a lot of the metal shows here are run by these “promoters” running pay-to-play ticket-selling scams. You know, where, like, Septic Flesh comes to town and there are 10 shitty local openers who are only there because they promised to sell dozens of $30 tickets. Fuck that.

But we’re also just too fucking irresponsible to deal with regular venues. Probably the best show was this one time when most of us were sober enough to get most of the way through a few songs. That was pretty epic for us. 

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

No. Not until Blight House can be more of a priority for its members and we can reasonably promise to do a set longer than 10 minutes that doesn’t end with puke and blood everywhere.

7.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

Yes and no. We only just recently put our first album online, and we didn’t bother to contact labels about it. Really, it was just for us but it seemed stupid to have recordings and not put them out there. If we get a good response to this first batch of songs, we might try to connect with a label next time around

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black and death metal?

It’s tough to say. At this point, the album has been out for only a few weeks. But we’ve been surprised at how many downloads we’re getting without any effort to promote. I think there’s just a big audience of extreme metal fans who are very in touch with the underground, and that’s been in our favor in these first weeks.

9.Are the band members involved with any other musical projects?

Yeah, like I said, it’s a side project for everyone involved. I’m not sure everyone would like his main gig connected to Blight House, so I won’t list all the names, but some are Flaregun Suicide, Witch Wizard, and Feculent Scalpel. But most of us are current or former members of Tovarish, an industrial/doom/dark ambient outfit that’s been around for a number of years [http://tovarish.bandcamp.com]. In a lot of ways, Blight House is simply sped-up Tovarish.

10.When can we expect a full length album and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We’re already recording new material and experimenting with a slightly improved quality of production, even deciding what the riffs actually are before getting to the studio. As with the first EP, it’s tough to reconcile the vibe we’re trying to create with mainstream production values. So we’re still working to find an acceptable middle ground.

If we can keep our shit together and it looks like people want to hear more, we’ll put out a full length. In the interim, we’re going to try to get on some comps. 11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

We listen to a lot of noise stuff in addition to metal. Lately I’m listening to things like Xiphoid Dementia, Vomit Arsonist, and Gnawed.

In terms of inspiration, generally what you’d expect but not a lot of recent stuff: Death, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Mortician, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Cattle Decapitation, Brutal Truth, Dark Throne. It sort of depends on what aspect of the music, which instrument or element you’re talking about. So, the leads are all about loving Voivod with that really effect-laden, atonal sound that sometimes doesn’t even seem like a guitar any more. Or, like, inspiration from Tit Wrench for lyrics that are as offensive and mean spirited as they are prurient and juvenile.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

I think a lot of them are represented in the music. Clearly, we watch tons of horror movies and wrestling. We’re also obviously into philosophy, drugs, talking shit about other people, and fucking.

Just thanks to you for contacting us and helping to promote our music and the scene in general. Someday you can say you were into Blight House before it was cool.
