  Apostle  are  a  band  from  Georgia  that  plays  an  atmospheric  mixture  of  post  black  metal,  grind  and  hardcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2026  album  "A  Splinter  In  The  Infinite  Noumenon"  which  will  be  released  in  June  by  Terminal  Hate  City.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  hardcore  direction  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  Blast  beats  and  elements  of  grindcore  are  also  added  into  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.

  Throughout  the  album  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  tremolo  picking  is  also  added  into  the  faster  riffing.  Shouts  are  also  utilized  at  times  along  with  the  clean  sections  also  add  in  touches  of  post  rock ,  spoken  words  can  also  be  heard  on  a  couple  of  tracks  and  the  recording  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments  as  well  as  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  death  metal  growls  .

  Apostle  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  an  atmospheric  form  of  post  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  grind  and  hardcore  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  existential  philosophy  and  the  writings  of  C.G  Jung.

Tyrannus/Mournhold/True Cult Records/2026 Full Length Review

 

  Scotland's  Tyrannus  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  atmospheric  mixture  of  black,  death,  thrash  metal  and  post  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2026  album  "Mournhold"  which  will  be  released  on  May  15th  by  True  Cult  Records.

  Synths  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  touches  of  post  punk  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Throughout  the  album  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  When  keyboards  and  clean  playing  is  utilized  they  also  take  the  music  into  more  of  an  atmospheric  direction  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  elements  of  death  and  thrash  metal  as  well  as  some  of  the  vocals  adding  in  more  of  a  thrash  metal  style  and  clear  singing  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  On  this  recording  Tyrannus  takes  and  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  death,  thrash  metal  and  post  punk  to  create  something  very  different  from  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Lovecraftian  Horror  and  Anti  Fascism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Tyrannus  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black,  death,  thrash  metal  and  post  punk,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Violent  Inheritance"  "Flesh  Eternal"  and  "Back  To  Grey'.  8  out  of  10.

  Cruel  Division  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  death,  post  metal,  crust  pun  and  hardcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2026  ep  "Carcosa"  which  will  be  released  in  May  as  a  joint  effort  between  Cultkill  Music  and  Santa  Diabla.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  ep  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  lot  of  brutal  sounding  blast  beats.

  Throughout  the  ep  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  mid  tempo  sections  also  add  in  elements  of  crust  punk  and  hardcore.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  post  metal  style,  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  some  death  metal  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  one  song  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  synth.  

  Cruel  Division  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes,  black,  death,  post  metal,  crust  punk  and  hardcore  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  everyday  life,  existentialism,  loss  of  reality  and  cosmic  horror  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Cruel  Division  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black,  death,  post  metal,  crust  punk  and  hardcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Carcosa"  and  "Amniotic  Misery".  8  out  of  10.

Wazzara/Arbor/2026 Full Length Review

 

  Wazzara  are  a  band  from  Switzerland  that  has  bene  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  an  atmospheric  mixture  of  blackgaze,  post  black  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2026  album  "Arbor"  which  will  be  released  on  February  13th.

  Bells,  rain  and  thunder  sounds  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  being  in  elements  of  doom  metal.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments  and  clear  singing  is  also  utilized  at  times.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in length.  When  clean  playing  is  utilized  it  also  adds  in  touches  of  shoegaze  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard.

 One  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  whispered  vocals  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  introduced  onto  the  album  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  post  metal  style  along  with  a  couple  of  songs  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  tremolo  picking  is  also  added  into  some  of  the  faster  riffing  and  one  song  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  samples.  and  synths.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  based  upon  a  seeker's  journey  toward  a  hidden  truth  -a  journey  of  transformation.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Wazzara  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackgaze,  atmospheric  post  black  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "9  Confines"  "Indigo  Sleep"  and  "Zessa  (Reborn)".  8  out  of  10.

  Frayle  are  a  band  from  Ohio  that  plays  a  mixture  of  blackgaze,  goth  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Heretics  &  Lullabies"  which  was  released  by  Napalm  Records.

  A  very  slow,  dark  and  heavy  doom  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Synths  are  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  the  clear  vocals  also  adding  in  more  of  a  gothic  metal  style  and  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.

  Clean  playing  is  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  album  while  whispered  vocals  can  also be  heard  on  a  few  tracks.  Touches  of  alternative  rock  are  also  used  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  adding  more  of  a  post  metal  and  blackgaze  style,  one  of  the  tracks  is  also  a  Lana  Del  Ray  cover  as  well  as  a  couple  of  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  harsh  blackened  vocals  and  growls  and  the  whole  recording  also  sticks  to  a  slower  direction.  

  Frayle  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  gothic,  doom,  post  metal  and  blackgaze  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism  and  Despair  themes.

  Sweden's  The  Vice  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for a   mixture  of  black'n'roll,  post  punk,  dark  and  gothic  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  ep  "The  Red  Tape  Sessions"  which  was  released  by  Noble  Demon.

lowheaven Interview

 

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

lowheaven is a pandemic band. We started after the demise of previous bands, and the chaos that ensued during the lockdown phase of covid. The songs we created were directly impacted by the faltering of life.

2.You have a new album coming out in August, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

We never set out to create or be a specific style of band, but the intense chaos of life during the writing phase is evident. We started to realize that we were writing the soundtrack to our individual forms of hell. I think when that mindset really took hold is when lowheaven started to grasp what we really were going to sound like, and we continued to double down every chance we got.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

The lyrical content is bleak, to say the least. As mentioned, the utter chaos of the pandemic, along with the full fledged meltdown of my (Dan's) life is completely on display. There's no hiding from that fact. I think it would have been tough to write about anything else, considering the significant lack of distraction that was provided by the lockdowns.

4.You have also mentioned an interest in the works of David Cronenberg,  Julia  Docourna and Horror Films, what influence does this have on the musical style that you play?

I think this played into the actual recording of the record more than the writing. I think we were continuously in the mindset of "how do we make this sound darker, more uncomfortable" and having that kind of imagery on display for us, most waking moments, it was definitely going to infiltrate the process. It's definitely a weird but necessary part to creating darkness, for us at least. 

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'ilowheaven'?

The only real clue I'll give you is that it slightly involves Jack Kerouac.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

The artwork for the whole layout of Ritual Decay was created by Joel Villegas, someone we had been a fan of for a couple of years prior. We actually met while on tour with Holy Fawn. I inserted myself rather aggressively into a conversation that was happening, so I could share my joy and interest in his work. Since that point, we've been trying to find a way to work together on something, and this was the ideal project. He absolutely conquered this layout in a way I couldn't have even imagined when we first began speaking about it. There's something really special about Joel.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We take a lot of pride in our live show. We all grew up in a southern Ontario scene where the performance was of priority, and that's never left our bones. We've been lucky enough to play a plethora of incredible shows, I don't know that I could pick just one. Always just excited for the next show.

8.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?

There is some touring throughout the rest of the year, and it looks like 2026 is going to be quite busy. We're all extremely excited to get out there and play these songs live. It's been years of sitting on this stuff, so we're ready.

9.The album is going to be released on 'MNRK Heavy', how did you get in contact with this label?

The Cole's note is that our record was just put in the right hands by a friend of the band. It was quite the process, but we definitely feel like we ended up in the right spot. Sometimes things just work out, however rare that can be. And you just have to enjoy it.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of hardcore and post metal?

I think it's a bit harder for us to tell, as we are the type of people who just keep our heads down and keep working. That being said, seeing our name on the likes of Kerrang or New Noise has been pretty wild. Again, just trying to enjoy the moment.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

This is something we are always conscious of, with really anything we do. I think we have really established who we are, and now it's time to extend out what that sound is, make the prettier prettier, make the heavier heavier. But at this point, it's all about getting Ritual Decay into every ear possible.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also e=what are you listening to nowadays?

There are so many bands we all love, coming from so many different places, it would be hard to just choose a few.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Low Before The Breeze Interview

 

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording the new album?

There were plenty of logistics to get squared away with the album release; artwork, packaging, distribution, planning tours etc. It’s felt like a second Job to get it all taken care of, but thankfully Jon (guitar) is much more gifted at this kind of thing than I am. 

Additionally, Dennis (bass) released an ep with their incredible project Culprits of the Youth and Jonathan(drums) has been finishing up a new LP with his project, Palaces. 

2.You have a new album coming, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

I like to think that our record feels like a maturation of a lot of the sounds we were trying out in our various EP’s. The songs are much more fleshed out in a way that feels very personally satisfying. We’ve long wanted to push for longer run times, more atmosphere, and the inclusion of electronics / noise - and it feels like we managed to naturally fit those things into a cohesive product. 

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

Lyrically, A Hole Beneath the Home We Shared follows a few darker moments of my life; experiencing domestic abuse, the failing of a relationship, sick family members - all filtered through the lens of religious guilt. 

Jon and Dennis have completely evolved our sound since joining the band, and we’ve become much stronger as a unit in the meantime. The earlier music was really us learning how to write together, while this record is an example of us more comfortable in our own skin. 

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Low Before The Breeze?

The name is really nothing too deep. I am a big fan of the band clipping, and in their song “she bad” the line “low before the breeze” is mentioned while referring to the temperature dropping. I was listening to their record, “Visions of Bodies Being Burned” a lot around the time that the band got started up, and after a lot of options were weeded out we settled on that lyric as a name. 

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

Our good friend Sasha Schilbrack-Cole (of the band Malevich) is one of our collective favorite artists, he was kind enough to take on the art design for the LP. I provided him with the lyrics as well as some photos of my own wedding and this is what he produced. We are all so proud of the results. 

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Our live show is chaotic, we all like to move around a lot and we are not afraid to make a mess on stage. I’ll take any chance I get to jump into the crowd and make folks uncomfortable (haha). 

Our first show in Savannah, GA will always feel very special. I think it was the first time that we were a part of a sold out gig, and the energy in the room was unlike anything we had experienced up to that point. Rest in Peace to the Lodge of Sorrows. 

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

We are hitting the road immediately after the record comes out. We’ll be in:

-Winston-Salem, NC-6/5

-Baltimore, MD 6/6

-Woodstock, GA 6/14

8.The new album was released on 'Terminus Hate City', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

The entire THC family has been incredibly kind to us and have supported our art and vision ever since we signed with them in November of 2024. Jay and team are cultivating a family of heavy and unique artists, it’s an incredibly strong roster and we are pumped to be a part of it. 

9.On a worldwide level, how has the reaction been to your music by fans of underground metal and hardcore?

The overall reception of the band, and especially our latest songs, has been more than we could have ever dreamt of. Anyone who isn’t a friend or family member giving a shit about our art will never cease to be amazing. 

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Writing for our next material has already begun, we want to be intentional with exploring different aspects of our sound and incorporating even more of each members personality into the final production. Expect a lot more electronics / noise, that’s for sure. 

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are currently listening to nowadays?

Gosh, there’s so much music that we all love; I like to think we have fairly eclectic musical taste. To name a few recent favorites from each member: The Armed, Apostle, Wednesday, Billy Woods, Chester Watson, and In Memories. 

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

  Low  Before  The  Breeze  are  a  band  from  Atlanta,  Georgia  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal,  screamo  and  harsh  noise  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "A  Hole  Beneath  The  Home  We  Shared"  which  will  be  released  on  may  30th  by  Terminus  Hate  City.

  harsh  noises  and  power  electronics  start  off  the  before  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  while  the  vocals  are  done  in  more  of  a  hardcore  style.  Black  metal  screams  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  music  also  adds  in  a  lot  of  screamo  elements  and  spoken  word  parts  and  samples  are  also  utilized  at  times.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also be  heard  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Clear  playing  is  also  added  into certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  some  tremolo  picking  also  being  added  into  the  faster  riffing  at  times.  Melodies  are  also  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  all  of t he  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  clear  singing  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  Low  Before  The  Breeze  plays  a  musical  style  that takes  black  metal,  screamo  and  harsh  noise  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  human  condition.

Noise Trail Immersion/Tutta La Morte In Un Solo Punto/I, Voidhanger Records/2025 Full Length Review

 

  Italy's  Noise  Trail  Immersion  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  dissonant  mixture  of  post  black,  death  metal  and  nathcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Tutta  La  Morte  In  Un  Solo  Punto"  which  will  be  released  in  June  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records.

  A  very  fast  and  brutal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  while  the  riffs  bring  in  more  of a  dissonant  style.  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls  while  the  music  also  adds  in  a  lot  of  mathcore  elements  and  the  riffing  also  adds  in  a  lot  of  melody.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  post  metal  style.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  a  couple  of  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  and  the  closing  track  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  On  this  recordign  Noise  Trail  Immersion  takes  post  black,  dissonant  death  metal  and  mathcore  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  very  diverse  release.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Italian  and  cover  nihilism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Noise  Trail  Immersion  and  if  you  a  fan  of  post  black,  dissonant  death  metal  and  nathcore,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Divampa  l'Ignoto"  "Lo  Spettacolo"  "Finzione"  and  " Tutta  La  Morte  In  Un  Solo  Punto".  8  out  of  10.

  Sweden's  Katatonia  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a melancholic  and  progressive  mixture  of  alternative,  gothic  and  post  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Nightmares  As  Extensions  Of  The  Waking  State"  which  will b e  released  in  June  by  Napalm  Records.

 

   A  very  heavy  and  atmospheric  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  adding  in  some  clean  playing  and  synths  while  the  vocals  are  done  in  more  of  a  clear  style.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  post  metal  style  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  

  A  lot  of  the  music  also  brings  in  elements  of  gothic  metal  while  also  adding  in  a  lot  of  alternative  rock  touches.  Some  of  the  tracks  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  back  up  vocals  along  with  the  album  also  getting  very  progressive  sounding  at  times  and  most  of  the  album  sticks  to  a  slower  direction.

  

  On  this  recording  Katatonia  expands  on  the  progressive  mixture  of  alternative,  gothic  and  post  metal  from  the  last  few  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dystopia,  inner  demons  and  purity  themes.   

  

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Katatonia  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Thrice"  "Lilac"  "The  Light  Which  I  Bleed"  and  "In  the  Event  of'.  8  out  of  10.

  Montreal,  Quebec,  Canada's  solo  project  thisquietarmy  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  drone,  experimental,  post  rock,  black  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2025  album  "Langue  Hybride"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Consouling  Sounds.

  Atmospheric  sounding  drones  and  ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  while  the  clean  sections  also  add  in  elements  of  post  rock  and  shoegaze.  Stringed  instruments  can  also  be  heard  on  a  couple  of  tracks  along  with  some  of  the  beats  also  being  programmed  and  the  recording  also  gets  very  experimental  at  times.

  A  lot  of  the  music  also  sounds  improvised  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  The  slow  and  heavy  riffs  are  also  done  in  more  of  a  doom  metal  direction  with  some  touches  of  black  metal  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  also  adding  in  influences  of  krautrock  and  psychedelic  music.  All  of  the  album  also  sticks  to  an  instrumental  direction  and  all  of  the  tracks  also  stick  to  a  slower  style  while  the  production  sounds  very  professional.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  thisquitarmy  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  drone,  experimental,  post  rock,  black  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Respirer,  I'instabilite"  and  "Solastalgie  impalpable".  8  out  of  10.

Death Descending/Self Titled/WomHoleDeath Records/2024 EP Review

 

  Death  Descending  are  a  solo  project  from  Pennsylvania  that  plays  a  mixture  of  atmospheric  black,  death  and  post  metal  with  a  touch  of  slam  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  titled  2024  ep  which  was  released  by  WormHoleDeath  Records.

  A  very  heavy,  brutal  and  slamming  sound  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  a  few  seconds  later.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  while  death  metal  growls  can  also  be  heard  at  times  as  well  as  some  atmospheric  soundscapes  also  being  utilized  briefly.

  War  samples  can  also  be  heard  briefly  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  some  brutal  blast  beats.  Some  of  the  recording  also  captures  the  modern  atmosphere  of  post  metal  and  most  of  the  ep  also  sticks  to  a  more  mid  tempo  direction,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  on  a  couple  of  tracks.

  Death  Descending  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  black,  death  and  post  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  death  and  darkness  themes.

Hjort Interview

 

.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the solo project?

The hjort story started in 2022, right after we released our "Nebula"-EP with V/Haze Miasma. At this time I channeled certain personal stress factors into lots of creative output - and I needed a different songwriting approach. Even more atmosphere. Longer tracks. Just sounds and instruments. Right from the heart.

 

2.In 2025 your first full length coming out, musically how does it differ from your previous singles?

The 2022 "Trilogy" wasn´t meant as an album or EP. Every track was happening spontaneously and released one by one. Those three tracks turned out to be quite dark and very monotonous. Now "evolve IV-VIII" had a bigger interval to the melodic songwriting approach within V/Haze Miasma. I missed that and felt the urge to create a whole album which should transport the vibe of the "Trilogy" but also lighten up a bit by clearer structures and some catchy melodies  - as we use them in V/Haze Miasma, too. I guess my whole mood during the songwriting process was in a way much more positive and confident. I think you can hear that. And in addition, this time I´m very proud of the whole production which is in this case entirely done by myself, aside from mastering which was done as always by Sebastian Moser of Grotesque Studios, my partner in (musical) crime since over 20 years.

 

3.So far all of the music has been instrumental. Are there any plans to use vocals in the future?

There aren´t any plans, but you never know.

 

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name "Hjort"?

It´s norwegian for deer. The "Trilogy" tracks were very inspired by autumn forests. The deer is a very proud and illustrious animal. I teached myself some Norwegian at that time. So for me this combination felt quite fitting.

 

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

I´d love to! The artwork is also largely done by myself. "evolve IV-VIII" was recorded in winter 2023/2024. At the same time I spent some days in the mountains of Bavaria and Austria. All the pictures you can find on the Vinyl version were taken by me at that time, mostly while walking or skiing through this beautiful nature.

 

6.With this project you record everything by yourself, are you open to working with other musicians or do you prefer to work solo?

I´m very open in working together with other musicians in general. That´s what I always did during the last 25 years and more in different bands like Circle of Grief, Shapeshift, Gloomball and until today in V/Haze Miasma. I love how creativity flourishes when different minds give their input into it. But I also like the possibility of a solo project to put everything right in the way I feel it.

 

7.The new album is going to be released on 'Inertial Music', can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Inertial Music is a small but very delicate label from Italy which was founded just in the beginning of 2024, when I´m right. They got my attention by releasing the solo work of Niklas Sundin. I directly felt that those guys follow a similar vibe in music and aesthetics, and I am very happy until today that I wasn´t wrong! I love the pleasant way of communication and cooperation but it's always focussed, reliable and very professional at the same time. And the owner Enrico Longhin is a very nice guy by the way!

 

8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black, doom and post metal?

I´m not sure about that, as hjort didn't get very much attention yet. But this even wasn´t the idea in the beginning. But now there is this beautiful album, so we are just starting to spread the word. You know, this is somehow part of the art. Not only create music but also release it, spread it, without knowing about the subsequent feedback. And yes, there were first reviews and reactions where people told in very beautiful words how much this music touched them on an emotional level. There couldn´t be a bigger compliment for me. This kind of connection between musician and listener always feels like magic!

 

9.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician during the future?

I don't think too much about that. I quit dreaming about being rich and famous many years ago, haha. Seriously, over the years I just found my way to enjoy being creative and feel confident with it. And this includes Hjort as well as V/Haze Miasma which I also hope stays a part of my musical being.

 

10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I am and always will be influenced by emotional music like black metal but also grunge. I moreover found out over the years that most of my music has a progressive touch. So I´m not a very old school guy when it comes to black metal. At the moment I listen very much to bands like Der Weg Einer Freiheit, Dool, Solstafir, Ghost Brigade, but also Pain of Salvation, Archive or Madrugada, PJ Harvey, just to name a few. I´m listening music all the time, I love vinyls, this is also an important part of my life.

 

11.What are some of your non musical interests?

If I´m not working or making music I love to be outside, ideally hiking some mountain!

 

12.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
