Lotus Thief/Forlesen/I Voidhanger Records/2024 Split EP Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between  San  Francisco,  California's  Lotus  Thief  and  Portland,  Oregon's   Forlesen  which  will  b3e  released  in  2024  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Lotus  Thief  who  return  with  their  mixture  of  black,  doom  metal,  ambient  and  post  rock.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  post  rock  style  clean  playing  while  their  track  is  also  over  11  minutes  in  length.  Clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  the  slower  riffs  also  bringing  in  elements  of  doom  metal,  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  as  well  as  the  harsher  vocals  being  mostly  black  metal  screams.  When  synths  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  more  of  an  ambient  direction.  The  production   sounds  very  professional  and  the  lyrics  are  inspired  by  Giovanni  Boccaccio's  "The  Decameron".

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  track  from  Lotus  Thief  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black,  doom  metal,  ambient  and  post  rock,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.

  Next  up  is  Forlesen  who  return  with  their  mixture  of  post  black,  doom  metal,  dark  ambient  and  slowcore.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  tribal  style  drumming  before  adding  in  some  doom  metal  style  bass  guitars  which  also  takes  the  music  into  a  heavier  direction.  Their  track  is  also  over  11  minutes  in  length  while  the  synths  also  bring  in  elements  of  dark  ambient  along  with  the  vocals  being  a  mixture  of  clear  singing  and  black  emtal  screams, when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  also  take  the  music  into  more  of  a  melodic  post  metal  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  and  the  lyrics  cover  the  Black  plague.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  track  from  Forlesen  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  post  black,  doom  metal,  dark  ambient  and  slowcore,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  i  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  post  black  and  doom  metal.  8 out  of  10.

Forlesen/Black Terrian/I, Voidhanger Records/2022 Full Length Review

 

  Forlesen  are  a  band  from  Portland,  Oregon  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of      post  black,  doom  metal,  dark  ambient  and  slowcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "Black  Terrian" which  will  be  released  in  October  by  I,  Voidhanger  Records.

  Ambient  style  synths  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  Elements  of  doom  metal  can  also be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  the  vocals  also  being  done  mostly  in  a  clean  style  and  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are utilized  they  are  also  done  in a   very  melodic  post  metal  style  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.  Grim  black  metal  screams  can  also b e  heard  at  times  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  tracks  along  with  one  track  also  introducing  female  vocals  onto  the  album.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Forlesen  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  post  black,  doom  metal, d ark  ambient  and  slowcore,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Strega"  and  "Saturnine".  8  out  of  10.

Forlesen/Hierophant Violent/Hypnotic Dirge Records/2020 CD Review

  Forlesen  are  a  band  from  the  Bay  Area  of  California  and  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  doom  metal,  dark  ambient  and  slowcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Hierophant  Violent"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Hypnotic  Dirge  Records.

  Atmospheric  sounding  drones  start  off  the  album  while  both of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Whispered  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  before  evolving  into  clean  female  vocals  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  synths  and  elements  of  dark  ambient  and  psychedelic  music.

  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  while  the  slow  and  heavy  riffs  are  mostly  rooted  in  doom  metal.  Clean  male  vocals  and  black  metal  screams  are  also  utilized  at  times  along  with  the riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody,  touches  of  slowcore  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  mostly  of  the  music  also  sticks  to  a  slower  direction  as  well  as  some  fast  playing,  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  also  being  utilized  briefly.

  Forlesen  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  black,  doom  metal,  dark  ambient  and  slowcore  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Forlesen  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black,  doom  metal,  dark  ambient  and  slowcore  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Following  Light".  8  out  of  10.
