Recreant/Still Burn/Halo Of Flies/2014 CD Review

  Recreant  are  a  band  from  Florida  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal,  crust,  screamo  and  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Still  Burn"  which  was  released  by  Halo  Of  Flies.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  heavier  parts  a  few  seconds  later  which  leads  up  to  more  of  a  black  metal  influenced  screamo  direction  along  with  a  mixture  of  screams  and  growls  and  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  amount  of  melody  in  the  bands  musical  style  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  the  crust  elements  really  start  to  kick  in.

  In  certain  sections  of  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  being  utilized  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  some  solos  and  leads  that  bring  a  post  rock  influence  into  the  bands  sound  and  as  the  album  progresses  violins  start  to  make  their  way  onto  the  recording.

  There  is  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  throughout  the  recording  and  at  times  you  can  hear  a  classical  music  feeling  being  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  side  of  the  bands  musical  style  which  also  sees  hardcore  style  yells  being  added  onto  some  of  the  later  tracks  while  the  screams  still  dominate  most  of  the  recording.

  Recreant  continue  the  black  metal  and  crust  punk  influenced  screamo  sound  of  previous  recordings  as  well  as  keeping  the  violins  and  they  manage  to  create  a  very  heavy,  raw  and  aggressive  musical  sound  with  this  recording,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  rape  culture  and  the  personal  struggles  of  mental  health.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Recreant  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal  influenced  screamo,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  Spectacle"  "Silent  Plague,  Silent  Trauma"  "Skin"  and  "All  the  Remains".  8  out  of  10.

Recreant/Self Titled/IFB Records/2012 Full Length Review

  This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Recreant  which  continues  their  mixture  of  black,  grind,  crust,  screamo  and  post  metal  with  the  recording  being  self  titled  and  released  by  IFB  Records  in  the  year  of  2012.

  The  album  starts  out  with  noise  sounds  before  going  into  a  more  post  rock  direction  and  a  few  seconds  later  the  music  gets  heavier  along  with  some  aggressive  screams  and  growls  which  also  bring  a  crustcore  feeling  to  the  recording  along  with  some  melody.

  When  the  album  goes  into  other  songs  you  can  hear  more  black  metal  elements  and  blast  beats  while  the  music  sticks  mostly  to  an  emo  violence  and  crust  orientated  sound  this  time  around  while  also  keeping  around  the  violins  and  after  awhile  small  amounts  of  spoken  word  samples  and  clean  sections  are  added  into  certain  parts  of  the  recording.

  With  this  recording  Recreant  go  for  more  of  an  emo  violence  sound  while  also  bringing  in  post  metal  elements  while  still  having  black  metal  and  crust  influences  as  keeping  the  melody  of  the  previous  album.

  Song  lyrics  cover  humorous  and  everyday  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful  and  heavy  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Recreant  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  emo  violence  mixed  with  crust,  black  and  post  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album>  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Rick  Scott  Is  An  Evil  Robot"  "Galatians"  and  "Modern  Day  F  Word".  8  out  of  10.

Recreant/Snakes And Vultures/2011 Compilation Album Review

  Recreant  are  a  band  from  Florida  that  plays  a  mixture of  black  metal,  crust,  grind  and  screamo  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2011  album  "Snakes  And  Vultures".

  The  album  starts  out  with  a  dark  and  melodic  sound  along  with  some  violins  and  after  a  couple  of  minutes  screamo  and  crust  style  vocals  are  added  in  along  with  the  music  getting  a  little  bit  heavier  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  When  the  album  goes  into  other  songs  the  music  becomes  a  blackened  form  of  crust  mixed  with  grind  and  screamo  as  well  as  adding  in  growls  and  blast  beats  in  certain  parts  of  the   recording  along  with  a  mixture  of  slow  and  fast  parts  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  samples  being  utilized.

  As  the  album  progresses  clean  playing  and  prog  elements  are  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  without  staying  too  far  away  from  the  heavy  and  melodic  sound  this  band  creates  with  their  music.

  With  this  album  Recreant  cover  a  lot  of  diversity  and  originality  with  their  music  with  the  main  focus  being  screamo  and  crust  while  you  can  also  hear  a  good  amount  of  black,  death  metal  along  with  melody  and  violins.

  Song  lyrics  cover  humorous  and  everyday  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  professional  sound  for  being  a  self  released  recording where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  album.

  In  my  opinion  Recreant  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black  metal,  crust,  grind  and  screamo  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Don't  Kick  Guppy"  "Crawl"  "The  Reaper"  and  "God  &  King".  8  out  of  10.
