Catachrest/Target Of Ruin/Selvajaria Records/2026 Compilation Album Review

 

  Catachrest  are  a  band  from  Sweden  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  thrash  metal  and  crust  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2026  compilation  album  "Target  of  Ruin"  which  consists  of  their  2021  demo  and  2025  ep  which  also  shows  the  guitars  being  re-recorded.

  Drum  beats  start  off  the  compilation  along  with  some  heavy  riffing  a  few  seconds  later  while  the  mid  tempo  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  element s of  crust.  Vocals  are mostly  black  metal screams  which  also  mix  the  first  and  second  wave  together  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  thrash  metal  influences.

  A  lot  of  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  80's  era  while  also  add  in  the  raw  energy  of  punk  rock  and  hardcore.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  lot  of  tremolo  picking,  blast  beats  and  the  brutality  of  grindcore,  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  the  whole  compilation  also  sticks  to  a  heavier  direction.

  Catechrest  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  black,  thrash  metal,  grindcore,  crust,  punk  and  hardcore  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  war  and  post  apocalyptic  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Catachrest  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black,  thrash  metal  and  crust  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Proximity  Of  Death"  "Ruiner"  and  "Killing  Fields".  8  out  of  10.

Ulag Zone/Assault PT. II/2022 EP Review

  This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Italy's  Ulag  Zone  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  black,  death  metal  and  grindcore  and  the  ep  was  self  released  in  2022 and  called  "Assault  Pt.  2".

  A  very  dark,  heavy  and  brutal  sound  starts  off  the  ep  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  death  metal  growls.  A  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  the  screams  also  adding  in  a  touch  of  black  metal  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  grindcore  elements  can  also  be  heard.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  solos  and  leads  also  bring  in  more  of  an  old  school  death  metal  style.  Tremolo  picking  is  also  added  into  some  of  the  faster  riffing  along  with  some  of  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  melody.  

Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  on  a  couple  of  tracks  along  with  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  when  clear  singing  is  introduced  they  also  add  in  influences  of  power  metal.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  death  themes. 

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ulag  Zone  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black, death  metal  and  grindcore,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Spidergoat"  and  "Lupercus".  8  out  of  10.

Apostle/A Splinter In The Infinite Noumenon/Terminal Hate City/2026 Full Length Review

  Apostle  are  a  band  from  Georgia  that  plays  an  atmospheric  mixture  of  post  black  metal,  grind  and  hardcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2026  album  "A  Splinter  In  The  Infinite  Noumenon"  which  will  be  released  in  June  by  Terminal  Hate  City.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  hardcore  direction  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  Blast  beats  and  elements  of  grindcore  are  also  added  into  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.

  Throughout  the  album  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  tremolo  picking  is  also  added  into  the  faster  riffing.  Shouts  are  also  utilized  at  times  along  with  the  clean  sections  also  add  in  touches  of  post  rock ,  spoken  words  can  also  be  heard  on  a  couple  of  tracks  and  the  recording  also  has  its  atmospheric  moments  as  well  as  one  song  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  death  metal  growls  .

  Death  metal  growls  start  off  the  live  set  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavy  and  brutal  direction  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  chaotic  style.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking,  blast  beats  and  grindcore  elements  can  be  heard  and  black  metal  screams  are  also  used  at  times.

  Vizir  are  a  band  from  Portugal  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  death  metal,  grindcore  and  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Caralhograma"  which  was  released  by  Haloran  Records.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  guttural  death  metal  screams.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a   very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  lot  of  tremolo  picking,  blast b eats  and  grindcore  elements.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  short  in  length  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  At  times  the  music  also  captures  the  raw  energy  of  punk  along  with  some  shouts  also  being  used  on  a  few  tracks,  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  some  clear  singing  and  samples  also  being  used  in  certain  sections  of  the  album.

  Flagelo  are  a  band  from  Columbia  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  doom,  death  metal  and  grindcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  ep  "Insaciable"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Nuclear  Winter  and  Night  Terrors  Records.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  ep  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  elements  of  doom  metal.  Vocals  are  mostly  cavernous  death  metal  growls  along  with  some melodies  also  being  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  blast  beats  are  also  added  into t he  faster  sections  of  the  songs.

Outergods Interview

 

1. Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

Aside from the usual PR campaign/promotion, we're tightening up our live set ready for Mangata Festival on the 12th of July, as well as future shows we're looking at locking in. We want to ensure our live set sounds as powerful as possible. Aside from that, I (Nathe) have been demoing a couple of song ideas, which may end up as part of album 3.

2. Recently, you have released a new album. Musically, how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

I would say it is a more refined version of what I was writing for the debut album. My head's a bit all over the place at the moment, as it was during the writing of "Kingdom...", though for different reasons, so that chaos is still very much in the music. That said, I feel like I’ve finally found the "Outergods sound" on this record.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music, and also, how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

Both Sam (who was the vocalist and lyricist on the first album) and Pat tend to lean into the dark fantasy and cosmic horror themes when writing the lyrics, and they both tend to pull from things that are happening in reality, real experiences, but weave in aspects of dark fantasy and cosmic horror. In terms of songwriting, I stopped writing metal music for a few years when I shifted my focus to my Lost Outrider project. Doing this unintentionally helped my songwriting process, especially when it came to writing for "Dethroned...", as well as helping when it came to the electronic aspect of our music.

4.I know that the bands name comes from the writings of H.P. Lovecraft and the Elden Ring, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in these fictional worlds?

Yeah, the band name is taken from the lore of HP Lovecraft. I find so much inspiration in the lore of Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring. I love the mood of the games, the world and character design, the stories, lore and how it makes me feel when I play those games. So, naturally, that seeped into our music. It's the same with The Lord of the Rings. All of these things are what I gravitate towards for escapism. Even when I was a kid, I used to love playing games like Quake, which has that dark, gothic and Lovecraftian vibe.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?

This was all done by my brother, Tim Sinfield. He has done 99% of the artwork for all my musical projects. I gave him a very high-level concept, then he put together a couple of sketches, and I think it was the 2nd sketch we went for. There is a lot of detail in there, even down to the pommel of the sword having the Outergods symbol on it, which is also in the eclipse of the debut album artwork. It's a great cover. I love it.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

So far, I'd say Bloodstock, Mangata Festival, and Cryptopsy. The crowd responses were great, and I felt we were locked in.. I'd describe our stage presence as intense, as we bring all the sounds from the record into the live environment and ensure there is no compromise when it comes to transferring our music to the stage.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

We have Mangata Festival coming up in July, and we are also in the process of arranging shows post-July. We're unsure about touring just yet.

8.The new album was released on 'Apocalyptic Witchcraft', how would you compare working with them to 'Prosthetic Records'?

I'd say they are both pretty similar in many ways. Both labels are really great to work for. With Prosthetic Records, it was always easy to get hold of our A&R contact, and we were very fortunate that we got to work with a label like that for our first release. With Apocalyptic Witchcraft, they are also always available to help with any questions we may have, and they put so much effort into this release with the promotion, music video, physical release, etc., which is great considering we're a small band. Having physical media is really important, especially for this genre, and both labels went all in on that, which is amazing. I was close to giving up during the writing process of "Dethroned..." due to a multitude of factors, but Apocalyptic Witchcraft's help with this release gave me hope.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and death metal?

It's been really positive. We have built up a nice following from all over with our music, especially since the release of "Dethroned...". Europe is very supportive of extreme metal, and we have seen great response from there.

10.Are any of the band members currently involved with any other bands or musical projects these days?

I (Nathe) have a solo project called Lost Outrider, which is the polar opposite of Outergods as it's a mix of alt pop, witch house and hyperpop. Pat has a black metal band called Antre, who were also featured on the Cyberpunk 2077 in-game radio station. Bret has a death metal band called Mordhau, and Dan has a metal band called The Cartographer, who are playing Bloodstock this year.

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

I think it will be an expansion of "Dethroned...", just as our sophomore was an expansion of "Kingdom...". I can't see us changing our sound too much, but instead we'll build on what we have done so far.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are currently listening to nowadays?

We are all listening to a plethora of music at the moment, from melodic death metal and grindcore, all the way to J-rock, J-pop, and video game soundtracks.

  Greece's  Dephosphorus  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  black,  death  metal  and  grindcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Planetoktonos"  which  will  be  released  in  July  as  a  joint  effort  between  Selfmadegod,  7  Degrees  Records  and  Nerve  Altar.

  A  very  heavy  and  brutal  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  album  also  adds  in  sci-fi  orientated  sounds  a  rimes.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  vocals  also  being  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls  and  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  blast  beats.

  Elements  of  grindcore  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Hardcore  style  shouts  are  also  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  album  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  synths,  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  On  this  recording  Desphosphorus  remain  true  to  the  mixture  of  black, death  metal  and  grindcore  that  they  have  established  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  the  science  fiction  writings  of  Iain  M.  Banks  and  James  S.A  Corey  with  an  existential  outlook.

  No  Heroes  are  a  band  from  Minnesota  that  plays  a  mixture  of  atmospheric  black,  death  metal,  grind  and  hardcore  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "brood  Eternal"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Sound  Of  The  Northwoods.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  hardcore  direction  while  the  vocals  are  a  mixture  of  shouts,  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls.  When  the  music  speeds  up a  great  amount  of  blast  beats,  tremolo  picking  and  gindcorre  elements  can  be  heard  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a lot  of  melody.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  some  of  the  songs  show  touches  of  experimental  and  noise.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  some  spoken  word  and  synths  samples  also  being  used  briefly,  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  No  Heroes  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  atmospheric  black,  death  metal,  grind,  crust,  hardcore  and  experimental  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  real  life  themes.

  Nekrodeus  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  death  metal,  grind  and  hardcore  punk  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album "RUAß"  which  will  be  released  in  may  by  F.D.A  Records.

  A  very  fast  and  brutal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  tremolo  picking,  blast  beats  and  grindcore  elements.  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  at  times  the  music  captures  the  raw  energy  oh  hardcore  punk.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.  Most  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  modern  era  along  with  a  couple  of  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording.  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  deep  death  metal  growls  and  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  grindcore  elements.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  dissonant  direction  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  grindcore  elements  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  A  lot  of  the  mid  tempo  sections  are  also  very  heavily  influenced  by  hardcore  and  noise  rock  and  clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  Tremolo  picking  is  also  added  into  some  of  the  faster  riffing  as  well  as  the  guitar  leads  also  bringing  in  more  of  a  technical  style  when  they  are  utilized  and  as  the  album  progresses  some  of  the  tracks  also  mix  in  an  influence  of  thrash  metal,  aggressive  shouts  are  also  introduced  on  a  later  song.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover   complicity  and  complacency  in  our  current  reality.

Sociasylum Interview

 

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new ep?

 

Since the release of our latest EP we toured Europe for 3 weeks alongside our Finnish friends, Rats Will Feast, and we had a great time playing in a lot of new places and visiting countries we haven’t been to before.

 

At the same time we haven’t slowed down and have been continuing writing songs for our upcoming LP, so far we have around 12, more or less, ready tracks. We will continue fine-tuning them and maybe will write a few more songs. Currently our aim is to start album pre-production this fall. 

2.In March you had released a new ep, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

Looking back at the EP, it feels like those songs serve as a bridge towards the more complete and better defined album or at least this is what I am telling myself. The EP songs were written mostly more than 2 years ago already with the thought of having more repetitive parts and longer, more thought out song structure. Harmony of Discordance EP songs came out sounding somewhat more metal influenced than our previous stuff, but as I don’t want to write the same album or song twice, each next release will continue the evolution of whatever Sociasylum will end up sounding like.

3.This is also your first release since 2018, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

Since the release of our last LP “Crossroads” we were focusing on playing as many shows as possible and did two European tours with different friends from around the globe. Up until the end of 2019 when our then singer, Heindrig, decided to quit the band and move to France. Losing our vocalist slowed us somewhat down and then while we looked for our new frontman, we decided to try to take things slower and focus more on songwriting, which wasn’t very productive at that time. Then eventually Covid period and lockdowns started and while a lot of people wrote full albums during the downtime we managed to only squeeze out 4 songs, out of which 3 made it to our EP some years later. So in conclusion taking things slower made us too relaxed and eventually all of us were sidetracked by being involved in multiple different musical projects, but now it’s quality over quantity approach and we are working towards making sure that the upcoming album is the best representation of what Sociasylum currently is.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the newer music and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

Our lyrical topics have always focused on the negative and sad aspects of humanity or about our personal struggles involved with either personal stuff or different events occurring around us.

Over the years I think that I have progressed enough that I can finally write the songs I always wanted to write for Sociasylum and play them with ease, at least this more related to the upcoming full length release. 

Lyrically it’s too early to know where we will go next with the album. 

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Sociasylum'?

The name is put together by combining two words, social and asylum, into one word. 

The founding members had their own definition for the name, but I personally like to define the name as a safe haven within our society where everyone can belong and feel welcomed enough to unleash their inner energy.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the ep cover?

With the EP we didn’t have a concrete vision for the artwork and we decided to send songs and lyrics with highlighted keywords and some vague ideas to Erik Hallik to get inspired and draw whatever comes to his mind.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

There've been a lot of fantastic shows, most of the funnest shows happen in our hometown at our DIY punk venue Ülase12, it’s always a blast to play there. Definitely one of the highlights that comes to mind is when we played Tallinn Music Week in 2021 to a fully packed venue and everything felt right. Also shows in Tallinn with Hexis have always been very memorable in all the different venues.

8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

We just recently finished our 3-week long European tour and have been planning to focus on finalizing our next full-lenght. Once the new album is on its way to be released we will definitely plan some followup tours.

9.Currently you are  unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

We have been trying to find a label for quite some time, have pitched our EP to a lot of different labels, but EPs aren’t as attractive enough as full-length releases or maybe we were pitching it to the wrong labels at the wrong time, who knows. Will definitely look for a label to have our upcoming full-length album released and hopefully we find someone that we can have a great cooperation with.

10.On  a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal and hardcore?

Sometimes it feels like we are too much in-between different genres and we aren’t purely one specific genre to be liked by all the fans of one specific style of music. I think throughout all our releases we have been too punk for metalheads and too metal for punks.

11.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Musically I feel like I am finally at my comfort level, where I am able to write songs at the needed level that I have been trying to reach all these years. Which means writing blackened hardcore songs and mixing them with grindcore sprinkled with all sorts of modern hardcore influences and dosed heavily with d-beat.

 

Currently all the new songs have been heavily influenced mostly by the recent releases from Wormrot, Full of Hell, Harm’s Way, Terror, Dying Fetus, Year of the Knife and Implore, all of these bands have released recently some of their strongest releases.

Regarding when the full length will be released, it’s too early to tell, not before the second half of 2025.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles the band members are currently listening to nowadays?

We are trying to keep our musical palates very variable and we consume everything from hip-hop to black metal and from techno to grindcore.

 

Personally, I have been again stuck listening to the latest releases from Full of Hell and Wormot.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Yeah, don’t become a people pleaser-workaholic and life will be more beautiful and SKA should be banned :D
