Desaster/Kill All Idols/Metal Blade Records/205 Full Length Review

 

  Germany's  Desaster  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  continuing  the  blackened  thrash  metal  style  of  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Kill  All  Idols"  which  will  be  released  in  August  by  metal  Blade  Records.

  A  very  heavy  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  are  added  into  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  vocals  being  done  in  more  of  a  first  wave  black  metal  style.

  The  music  also  rakes  and  80's  style  into  a  more  modern  direction  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Elements  of  thrash  metal  are  also  utilized  quite  a  bit  throughout  the recording  along  with  some  spoken  words  also  being  used  at  times  as  well  as  some  of  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  touch  of  punk  rock,  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  also  remain  true  to  the  old  school  era  and  the  whole  album  also  sticks  to  a  heavier  direction.

  On  this  recording  Desaster  remains  true  to  the  blackened  thrash  metal  style  that  they  established  on  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness,  hate  and  war  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Desaster  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackened  thrash  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Great  Repulsive  Force"  "Kill  The  Idol"  "Fathomless  Victory"  and  "Stellar  Remnant".  8  out  of  10.

Desaster/Bringing The Storm To Rotterdam/Nomad Snakepit Productions/2024 Live Album Review

 

  Desaster  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  blackened  form  of  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  live  2024  album  "Bringing  The  Storm  To  Rotterdam"  which  will b e  released  in  July  by  Nomad  Snakepit  Productions.

  High  pitched  black  metal  screams  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  heavy  and  melodic  riffing  a  few  seconds  later.  Tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  riffing  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  thrash  metal  elements.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  80's  to  early  90's  era.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  also  remain  very  true  to  an  old  school  extreme  metal  style,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  they  also  add  in  some  Slayer  and  Kreator  covers.

  On  this  recording  Desaster  takes  their  blackened  thrash  metal  style  to  the  live  stage  and  showcases  a  good  amount  of  material  they  have  released  over  the  years.  The  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Darkness,  Blasphemy,  Hate  and  War  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Desaster  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  and  thrash  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  live  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "In  A  Winter  Battle"  "Devil's  Sword"  and  "Tormentor".  8  out  of  10.

Desaster Interview

 

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

Weill, I´m just doing this interview on release date, Friday, the 4th of June! We are very happy that the album is out right now! We´ve started with the recordings in october 2020 and finished mixing the album in early January 2021, so we had to wait half a year till the release which was a pain in the ass! We were hot to get the response from the fans and see if they will like it. But the wait is now over and the first response is so overwhelming that I really feel good now!!

 

2.Recently you have released a new album, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?

It doesn´t differ musically because we are always sticking to our very own style. The only things that changed a bit is first of all the drum work on the new album. Our new drummer hont is very skilled and brought some fresh and new elements to our sound. The other thing is the sound of the album: this time we wanted a more old-.school and natural sound and I think we managed to achieve it! 

 

3.This is also your first full length in 5 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?

Well a lot of things happened during the last 5 years. The most notable event was of course the change of drummers in 2018! Our old drummer Tormentor had joined ASPHYX and trhe even also SODOM, so it was impossible for him to rehearse regulary with DESASTER. It was a hard decision for us, but after over 20 years we had to walk different ways. Hont, who had played together with singer Sataniac in a band before took over the drum sticks and is a permanent band member for 3 years now. In 2019 we released a special 7“ single to celebrate the band´s 30th anniversary and there he can be heard for the first time on the songs „Black Celebration“ and „Primordial Obscurity“. The second one was an appetizer for our new album and is (re-recorded) also included there! 

 

4.What are some of the lyrics and topics the band explores with the newer music and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters over the years?

Well, in the past our lyrics dealt with anti-christian themes but also with middle-ages, castles, battles etc...Sataniac´s lyrics nowadays are still anti-religious, but on another level, it´s more philosophical without beeing pseudo-intellectual. As songwriters we have improved a lot during the years. In the past there was always a lot of „trial and error“ while writing songs, but nowadays the songwriting usually is more straight to the point, more sprirtual and more effective!

 

5.Over the years you have also covered some satanic themes, can  you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts?

Well, when I satarted listening to Mtal in 1986 I soon was fascinated by all the „evil“ bands, especially the lyrics of the King in Mercyful Fate attracted me much! And when we founded our own band in 1988/1989 it was clear from the beginning that we also wanted to walk the „left hand path“ lyrically! We never claimed to be Satanists but we had anti-christian lyrics like „Sacrilege“ & „Devil´s sword“ etc...Our western world is still ruled by religious institution like the catholic church and we still fight against those false prophets and „saints“ who want to tell the üpeople what to think, believe and do! 

 

6.How would you describe the cover art that is presented on the album cover?

The cover shows the rotting saints which were banned from the church behind them. The deeper meaning is that people should get rid of all those false saints who want to suppress them. I like the artwork very much, it´s made by Marcos Miller from Brazil!

 

7.The band has been around for more than 30 years, what is it that motivates you to keep going after all these years?

We still are an underground band that only meets when we want to. There´s no pressure from a record company to release an album every second year, go on tour for months and the same again and again! We only play selected shows with bands we like and when we think there´s the time for another DESASTER album we do it! This freedom is the main reason why we are still around and why we still have the flame burning!

 

8.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

Our stage performance is vere energetic. We like to play live very much, what can be better than to bang and drink together with the fans ?! I think every real Metal band must be able to perform their music also live on stage, you can produce everything you want in a studio but you also have to produce the same atmosphere on stage if you want to be called a real „band“. 

Of course the best shows are when the audience is totally freaking out, you know: headbanging ´til neckbreaking! I can´t understand those people who pay the entrance to stand in a corner without moving at all! I go to a conceret because I like the bands that are playing, I want to enjoy the show together with my friends, have some beers and bang like hell !!! But most DESASTER-gigs were very good so far, DESASTER on stage - CHAOS in front of the stage, that´s how it should be like ! AAARRRGGGHHH !!! One of the best shows ever was a gig in Serbia where the fans couldn´t speak english so they didn´t know our lyrics but were singing along my guitar tunes! That was fantastic, harhar!

 

9.A few years back a few bands got together to cover your songs and do a tribute album, what are your thoughts on that release?

Of course we were very proud of that! It was a project from fans of the band and we liked the outcome very much! To listen to how other bands interprete our songs was great and we enjoyed that! 

 

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your newer music by fans of black and thrash metal?

Well the response is becoming bigger and bigger, I think we never had so many interviews, reviews & requests before! And it seems like the fans like our new album, those who heard it already wrote us and said it is a killer one! Of course there are also those who only like the first albums but that´s also okay for me! With some bands it´s the same for me! 

 

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

We will do always the same, harhar! No progression at all is our slogan! But I think our aim is always to write an album with all the desastrous trademarks in it in a good balance! 

 

12.What are you listening to nowadays?

Well, I listen to a lot of old classic stuff but also like some „newer“ bands like MGLA from Poland. 

 

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts? 

In those days it´s very important that fans support the bands who earn their living with music! So please support them and help them! If then there´s some money left feel free to buy the new DESASTER album, otherwise just steal it, hehe!

Desaster/Churches Without Saints/Metal Blade Records/2021 Full Length Review

 

  Desaster  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black,  death  and  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Churches  Without  Saints"  which  will  be  released  in  June  by  Metal  Blade  Records.

  A  very  apocalyptic  synth  orientated  intro  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  which  also  shows  an  influence  of  the  first  wave  style.  Vocals  are  mostly  blackened  metal  screams  while  the  music  also  brings  in  a  great  amount  of  thrash  metal  elements  and  dark  sounding  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  riffing.

  Most  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  80's  while  also  sounding  very  modern  at  the  same  times.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  some  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  also  being  added  into  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs.

  Some  of   the  more  deeper  aggressive  vocals  also  adds  in  touches  of  death  metal  along  with  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized.  The  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  a  couple  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length,  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  and  clean  playing  and  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  life,  death  and  satanism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Desaster  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black,  death  and  thrash  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Learn  To  Love  The  Void"  "Churches  Without  Saints"  "Sadistik  Salvation"  and  "Endless  Awakening".  8  out  of  10.

We Worship Desaster-A Tribute To The Tyrants/Grom Records/2015 Double CD Compilation Review

  Desaster  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  has  been  around  since  the  mid  90's  and  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal  and thrash  and  this  is  a  review  of  a  double compilation  that  shows  plenty  of  bands  doing  cover  versions  of  their  songs and  was  also  rleeased  by  Grom  Records  and we  will  review  the  songs  one  by  one.

CD 1-
1.Intro-Crowd  noises  and a  live  concert  are  featured  on  this  intro  that  starts  off  the  album

2.Kolac  brings  us  "Crypts  Of  Dracul"  which  starts  out  with  wind  sounds  before  adding  in  synths  a  few  seconds  later  and  after  a  few  minutes  the  music  gets  heavier  along  with  some  black  metal  screams  and  melodic  riffing  and  the  song  is  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  with  the  faster  sections  using  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats. 

3.Slaughtered  Priest  brings  us  "Metalized  Blood"  which  starts  out with  some  German  style  thrash  riffing and  grim  black  metal vocals  a few  seconds  later  and  the  music  goes  for  a  retro  style  of  black/thrash  metal.  

4.Guerra  Total  brings  us  "The  Swords  Will  Never  Sink"  a  song  that  uses  a  great  amount  of  melodic  guitar  leads  and  also  has  an 80's  feeling  that  reminds  me of  some  of  the  Brazilian bands  of  that  era  and  the  song  also  remains  true  to  a  blackened  thrash  metal  direction.   

5.Volcanic  brings  us  "Sworn  To  Avenge"  a  song  that  goes  for  more  of  a  first  wave  style  of  black  metal  while  also  mixing  in  a  good  dose  of  thrash  and also  utilizing  a  great  amount  of  meldic  riffing  into  the  song.

6.Bloodthirst  brings  us  "Beasts Of  Wrath  And  Victory"  a  song  that  starts  out  with  an  old  school  80's  style  of  death  metal  while  the  music  is  still  very  heavily  influenced  by  black  and  thrash  metal.

7.Bonehunter  brings  us  "Venomous  Stench"  another  song  that  remains  true  to  a  Germanic  blackened  style  of  thrash  metal.

8.Fatal  Embrace  brings  us  "Hellbangers"  a  very  raw  and  heavy  black/thrash  metal  song   that  also  has  a  very  heavy  80's  atmosphere  to  it.

9.Extirpation  brings  us  "Hellfire's  Dominion"  a  very  heavy  raw  and aggressive  old  school  black/thrash  metal  track  that  also  brings  in  a  bit  of  the  early  90's  second  wave  style  and  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.

10.Satanika  brings  us  "Symphony  Of  Vengeance"  a  song  that  has  a  very  heavily  90's  orientated  German  thrash  metal  sound  to  it  while  the  vocals  are  in  more  of  a  black  metal  direction   

11.Invocacian  brings  us  "Spare  No  Coward"  a  song  that  starts  out  with  some  very  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  which  they also  mix  in  with  an  80's  style  of  thrash  as  well  as  adding  in  a  touch  of  death  metal.

12..Triumphant  brings  us  "Past...Present...Future..."  a  song  that  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  black  and  thrash  metal  but  done  with  a  more  catchy  approach  as  well  as  adding  in  a  bit  of  the  more  raw  second  wave  style  at  times.

13.Terrorhammer  brings  us  "Devil's  Sword"  a  song  that  is  a very  old  school  and  80's  orientated  black/thrash metal  song.

14.Nocturnal  Witch  brings  us  "Witchcraft" a  song  that  goes  for  a  raw  style  of  black  metal  but  also  havign  a  mid  80's  death  thrash  vibe.

15.Tirani  brings  us  "And  The  Powers  Above"  a song  that  starts  out  with  some  clean  playing  and  exotic  sounding  scales  as  well  as  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  synths  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavy  and  melodic  black/death  metal  direction. 

16.The Meads Of Asphodel  brings  us  "Casteland"  a  song  that  starts out  with  clean  playing  and  atmospheric  sounds  and  a  few  seconds  later  the  music  starts  getting  more  heavier  along  with  some  melodic  leads  and  the  song  also  goes  for  an  old  school  style  of  black  metal.

17.Sanctifier  brings  us  "Profanation"  a song  that  goes  for  more  of  an  old  school  mixture  of  death.  thrash  and  black  metal.

1.Futhark brings us "Hell-born"  a song that  starts  off  with  a  very  ritualistic and  demonic  sound  before  going  into  a  first  wave  black  metal  direction  along  with  a touch  of  thrash. 

2.Speed Command  brings  us  "Face  Of  Darkness"  a  song  that  goes  for  a  mid  80's  style  of  black  metal.

3.Hellocauster  brings  us  "Teutonic  Steel"   a  song that  starts  out with  a  very  melodic  guitar  lead  and riffs  that  also  follow  the  same  pattern  before  going  into  more  of  an  old  school  style  of  black  metal.

4.Lux  Divina brings  us  "In  A  Winter  Battle'  a  song  that  goes for  a  very  retro  and melodic  style  of  black/thrash metal  which  also brings  in  a  small  amount  of  acoustic  guitars and  clean  singing  vocals.

5.Witchburner  brings  us  "Divine  Blasphemies"  a  song  that  goes  for  a  very  raw  and  primitive  black/death  metal  direction  as  well  as  utilizing  a  great  amount  of  blast beats  and  a  touch  of  thrash.

6.Nocturnal  brings  us  "Tears  Of  An  Old  Wizard"  a  song  that starts  out  with  a  very  dark  and  melodic  sound  and  a  powerful  bass  guitar before  going  for  a  more  old  school  style  of  black  metal t hat  is  more  closer  to  the  mid  80's  or  early  90's  style.

7.Hellsword  brings  us "Alliance  To  The  Power  Throne"  a  song  that  starts  out  with  violins  and  the  sounds  of  war  before  going  into  more  of  an  80's  black/thrash  metal  direction  along  with  a  great  amount  of  melody.

8.In Corpore  Mortis  brings  us  "As  The  Deadwood  Calls"  a  song  that  starts  out  with  an  atmospheric  sound  and  clean  playing  before  going  into  a  grim  and  melodic  style  of  black  metal.

9.War-Head  brings  us "Nekropolis  Kartago"  a  song  that goes  for  more  of  a  raw  old  school  style  of  black  metal  as well  as  adding  in  a  touch  of  thrash   and  melodic  death  metal.

10.Incinerador  brings  us  "Into  A  Magical  Night"  a  song  that  goes  for  an  80's  style  of  black/thrash  metal  as  well  as  adding  in  a  touch  of  early  death  metal.

14.Siculicidium  beings  us  "A  Skyline  In  Flame  -  A  Touch  Of  Medieval  Darkness"  a  song that  starts  out  with  clean  playing  that  almost  has  a  pagan  feeling  to  it  and  once  melodic  guitar  leads  are  added  into  the  music  the  song  starts  getting  heavier  as  well  as  bringing  in  grim  black  metal  screams.

15.Graves  Of  Saints  brings  us  "In  The  Ban  of  Satan's  Sorcery"  a  song  that  has  a  very  vintage  early 90's  black  metal  sound to it.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding compilation  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  Desaster,  black,  death  metal  and  thrash.  8  out  of  10.
