Ides Of Gemini/Carthage/Strange Fruit/Magic Bullet Records/2015 EP Review

  California's  Ides  Of  Gemini  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  that  continues  their  mixture  of  black  metal,  doom,  psychedelia  and  shoegaze  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  ep  "Carthrage/Strange  Fruit"  which  will  be  released  on  April  18th  by  Magic  Bullet  Records.

  Acoustic  guitar  playing  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  drum  beats  before  adding  in  clean  singing  female  vocals  that  have  a  very  etherial  atmosphere  to  them  and  after  a  minute  and  a  half  the  music  starts  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  and  the  music  also  brings  in  a  great  mixture  of  both  clean  and  heavy  parts.

  The  second  track  is  a  cover  of  Billie  Holiday's  "Strange  Fruit"  which  start s out  of  clean playing  and  melodic  vocals  and  the  song  is  also  based  on  a  poem  by  Abel  Merepool  and  the  solos  and  leads  that  are  utilized  are  very  dark  and  melodic.

  Ides  Of  Gemini  creates  another recording  that  is  very  dark,  melodic,  heavy  and  atmospheric  sounding  and  also  remains  true  to  the  sound  they  have  established  on  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding recording  from  Ides  Of  Gemini  and  if  you  are  a  fan of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Strange  Fruit".  8  out  of  10.

Ides of Gemini/Old World New Wave/Neurot/2014 CD Review

  Ides  Of  Gemini  are  a  band  from  Los  Angeles,  California  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal,  doom,  psychedelic  and  shoegaze  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Old  World  New  Wave"  which  will  be  released  in  September  by  Neurot.

    A  very  dark,  heavy  and  melodic  doom  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  female  vocals  and  after  awhile  you  can  hear  a  little  bit  of  the  post  black  metal  sound  in  the  guitar  riffing  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  some  guitar  leads  that  add  more  of  a  shoegaze  feeling  to  the  bands  musical  sound.

  Most  of  the  music  sticks  to  a  slower  direction  from  beginning  to  end  of  the  recording  and  they  also  bring  in  a  couple  of  long  epic  tracks  as  well  as  the  vocals  getting  more  ethereal  as  the  album  progresses  and  some  of  the  later  songs  have  a  slight  70's  psychedelic  and  occult  rock  feeling  to  them  at  times  and  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording.

  Ides  Of  Gemini  create  another  dark  sounding  recording  which  continues  their  melodic  and  ethereal  doom  metal  sound  while  still  having  some  black  metal,   shoegaze  and  psychedelic  elements  in  their  musical  sound,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  esoteric  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ides  Of  Gemini  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Black  Door"  "White  Hart"  "The  Adversary"  and  "Scimitar".  8  out  of  10.

Ides Of Gemini/Constantinople/Neurot/2012 CD Review

  Ides Of Gemini are a band from Los Angeles, California that plays a mixture of black metal, doom, psychedelic and shoegaze and this is a review of their 2012 album "Constantinople" which was released by Neurot.

Drums are all slow playing with not much in the way of fast playing or last beats, while the bass playing has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars.

Rhythm guitars are all slow riffs that combine elements of black metal with dream doom, psychedelic and shoegaze elements with a good amount of melody as well as some clean playing and there are no guitar solos or leads present on this recording.

Vocals are all clean singing with no growls or screams, while the lyrics cover dark, psychological, emotional and occult themes, as for the production it has a very strong, powerful and heavy sound to it.

In my opinion Ides Of Gemini are a very great psychedelic doom/black metal band and if you are a fan of this style, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Vessal And The Snake" "Ressurectionists" "Austrian Windows" and "Martyrium". RECOMMENDED BUY.
