Tenebras Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

Hello, my friend. Of course! Our band is called Tenebras and the members are Erebus Dexx and Cihuanahualli Fernanda. We are a Mexican/Greek duo that combines blackened death metal with folk and doom elements.

2.In July you had released your first album, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style you went for on this recording?

For sure! Yes, in July, indeed, our debut album “Mora” was out and we tried our first material to be very experimental and to expand to many genres of extreme music. Our basic genre is the blackened death metal, but we wanted our music to be heavy but at the same time very melodic and atmospheric. We use many doom metal elements and we also love to compose folk traditions from all around the world in our music. So the result was extreme but at the same time calm in many parts.

3.Your lyrics cover a good amount of satanic, occult and paganism themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in those topics and practices?

Indeed, we love to have many different themes in our lyrics. We love horror stuff and we also like the folkore traditions of every country especially in the supernatural subject. Most of our lyrics are about satanic rituals, but other songs talk about creatures from the Lovecraftian mythology and the mexican culture.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Mora'?

Mora is a creature from the greek mythology. It's mostly a tell-tale horror legend in the old greek villages that was meant to scare the people but we have read some reports about that spirit. In the psychology, Mora is considered like the “sleep paralysis”. In the legend, she takes the form of an old woman that appears under her black veil and she chokes you at the time that you sleep. The result is that you can't move and the legend says that if you try to say something, she takes your speech and you are not able to talk never again. We thought that is a very rare and unique legend that mostly Greeks know, so it would be good to show more about the greek culture in all over the world.

5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the album cover?

We wanted our artwork to be exactly like our music: dark and atmospheric. Fernanda created the artwork and we wanted to show a little mystery to the people that hear our material about the optical perception on the title of our album. We followed the legend, because Mora appears in the villages. So Fernanda created the dark forest background and we wanted to let the imagination of the auditors to think about how is Mora on their minds.

7.One member lives in Greece while another lives in Mexico, how does this work out in the recording process?

The recording wasn't of course so simple, but we met the previous summer and we worked in our material. Fernanda created the artwork from Mexico and after the recordings that took place in Greece we proceeded to the mixing and mastering.

8.The album was released through 'Death Portal Studio', can you tell us a little bit more about how you came in contact with this label?

We made contact with many labels but we chose Death Portal Studio because we thought that our material fits with the musical stuff that this label uploads. So after this, we talked with the owner of the label and he agreed to proceed to the release together.

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black, doom and death metal?

I have to admit that it's better than we thought. Many people support us and we are happy that many countries hear us. We were surprised also from the countries that hear us, because except countries like France and Belgium, people from Afghanistan, Russia, Uruguay and Latvia promoted also our material. We are very happy from these results and we thank so much the people that support our music.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

Prepare definitely for the next album very soon! Our next album will be more heavy and brutal and this time more melodic and dark.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

We like to combine many bands that we hear in our music. From the death metal bands, we influence from At The Gates and The Black Dahlia Murder. From black metal bands, we take melodic elements from Dark Funeral and Belphegor. As for the folk parts, our big influence is Arkona and In Extremo.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

Erebus Dexx is occupied with mixing and mastering and also with the creation of lyric and promo videos via DEXX Productions and Cihuanahualli Fernanda is a psychologist and creates arts.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

We would like to thank you so much for the review of our album and for this interview. It's a real honor because we follow your site and we really like it so much! So thanks to you and to our fans that promote our music as much as they can and we can give you one promise: wait for the new material because many brutal stuff is on the way! Stay metal!
