Ljosazabojstwa/Gloryja Smierci/Godz Of War Productions/2020 CD Review

Poland's  Ljosazabojstwa  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  the  blackened  death  metal  style  of  their  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Gloryja  Smierci"  which  was  released  by  Godz  Of  War  Productions.

Ritualistic  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier,  darker  and  brutal  musical  direction.  The  vocals  are  also  a  mixture  of  black  metal  screams  and  death  metal  growls  along  with  all  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  and  melodic  style  while  the  music  also  has  a  lot  of  90's  influences  but  keeping  it  modern  at  the  same  time.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  one  track  also  adding  in  a  brief  use  of  ritualistic  sounding  synths.

When  the  music  speeds  up a   decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  along  with  one  song  also  introducing  clean  playing  onto  the  recording  as  well a s  the  songs  also adding  in a   decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  tremolo  picking  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  faster  riffing.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Polish  and  cover  Anti  Christianity,  Death  and  Cruelty  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ljosazabojstwa  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  blackened  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Zorka  Paeyn"  and  "Initfany  Boh".  8  out  of  10.

Poland's  Throneum  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  into  more  of  a  ritualistic  blackened  death  metal  direction  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Oh  Death...  Oh  Death... Determinate  Preach  And  Led  Us  Astray" which  was  released  by  Godz  Of  War  Productions.

A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  evil  sounding  melodies  also  coming  out  of  the  guitar  riffing.  Half  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  blackened  screams  as  well  as  the  music  also  mixing  in  a  great  amount  of  death  metal  elements.

All  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  solos  and  leads  also  remain  true  to  an  old  school  style.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  also  be  heard  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  ritualistic  sounding  instrumentals  one  of  which  also  introduces  horror  orientated  keyboards  onto  the  album,  operatic  female  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Qabala,  Luciferian  and  Mythological  themes.

A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  also  introducing  melodic  guitar  leads  onto  the  recording.  A  couple  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  brutal  sounding  blast  beats  and  melodies  are  also  added  into  the  guitar  riffing.

Vocals  are  done  in  a  very  early  90's  death  metal  style  that  is  also  very  easy  to  understand  while  also  showing  an  influence  of  the  thrash  element  which  was  mixed  in  at  the  same.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  of t he  faster  riffing  also  mixing  in  elements  of  black  metal.

The  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  era  but  also  mixed  in  with  a  more  modern  day  brutality.  One  track  also  introduces  clean  playing  and  semi  melodic  vocals  onto  the  recording. Toxik Death Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album?
- for various reasons it took some time to complete the album, and we took a little break after completing the album to recharge our batteries a bit. We intended to rehearse in order to do gigs and write New material, but then covid-19 happened. Finally we're allowed to rehearse again, so now we're writing some riffs and stuff, and trying to come up with some cool ideas for future stuff.

1.You have a new album coming out in August, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?
- I think we focused more on songwriting this time around, and not just on playing as fast as we can. The new material is tighter and sounds a bit darker and evil than our old material.

1.This is also your first album in 6 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame?
- Our old lineup fell apart somewhere around 2015. So the band was on hold for a while before we decided to give it another shot. It took time to rebuild, and find the right people, which can be hard in a small town like where we live.

4.Some of your lyrics touch on satanism and occultism, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in those topics?

Henning: : I have had a fascination for the occult, cosmic horror and satanism for as long as I can remember. Mostly on an allegorical or metaphorical level. As the lyrical themes on this record are very twisted and depraved, it is therefore very natural for me to incorporate various symbolism and imagery from these subjects in our lyrics.

5.What are some of the other lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored over the years with your music?

- You would have to ask our old vocalist

1.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name ''Toxik Death'?
- I'm not sure anymore, in 2003 we were all pretty much kids. I don't think there is any particular meaning behind it other than that it sounded cool at the time.

1.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover?
- We got in touch with Marcus from Obsessed by cruelty, since we already knew he made cool designs for bands. We told him that we wanted something that looked like the bastard child of old Slayer and Sepultura.

1.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
- We really never played that many shows, but opening for Toxic Holocaust both in Stavanger and Oslo comes to mind as good gigs. We were all well rehearsed and didnt get hella wasted before the show. I dunno about stage performance, we dont think much about it. We just play

1.The new album is coming out on 'high Roller Records' how would you compare working with them to your older label 'Demonhood Productions'?
- Demonhood was a good label for sure, they really championed the band. The advantage of being on High Roller is that they are a well known and well respected label. Hopefully that enables us to reach out to more people with our new record.

10.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black and thrash metal?

- I don't know to be honest. We never paid much attention to it really. Hopefully there's some maniacs out there that'll appreciate the new album

11.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

- Too early to tell really, we have just recently started fucking around with some new material. But I doubt we will reinvent the wheel somehow haha.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
- Slayer, Sepultura, Metallica, Possessed, Exodus, Bathory, Sodom, Razor, Destruction, Dark Angel, Kreator to mention a few. Of course there are too many to mention, but those are a select few.

We all listen to a lot of different musical genres. I was just listening to Tangerine Dream earlier today, which isn't very metal at all.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Cheers for the interview!

Heksebrann Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

We are Heksebrann, a three-piece band from Görlitz, Germany. Mario is our bass player, delivering filthy HM-2 bass sound and guttural vocals. Julius is the main voice of Heksebrann and guitarist. Marko is hitting the drums with no excuse. We play heavy rock for headbangers and people who love hard music. Recently, we released our full length “Spiritual Descending”. Give it a listen and if you have the chance to see use live, grab a beer and come along!

2.So far you have released a demo and a full length, musically how do they both differ from each other?

Actually, not as much as you may think. Some songs from the album were already written before the demo. The idea behind the “The Hunt” demo was to deliver a first impression of our musical style, so every song is a little different. Our debut album “Spiritual Descending” also covers a wide range of styles, but all in all it is a more complete piece of art. There is some kind of common theme through the whole Album and everything from Artwork, Lyrics to Songwriting works together. You will hear on both records that you’re listening to Heksebrann.

3.Some of your lyrics also touch on the occult, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in this subject?

It is more like a general interest in occult and dark themes. We often use these motives to tell stories that can be reflected into the present time. For instance, people still search for the culprit for their unfounded fear. If we come up with an inspiring story around the subject, we might write a song about it.

4.What are some of the other lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

Beside the witch hunt theme, there are 3 major topics that we include in our lyrics. There is often a reference to the elements that stand above all and which people seek to control. The motif of failed journeys where the lyrical subject chooses a path with a twist that eventually leads to its failure. Last but not least, songs about the supernatural, consciousness and spirit of oneself.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Heksebrann'?

Maybe it seems a little strange that a band from Germany has a Norwegian name. Well, here is the story. Just after forming the band in 2016 we made a trip to Norway to spend our holidays and work on some music ideas that even made it to our recent album Spiritual Descending.
While driving through the country, we were listening a lot to Kvelertak’s Nattesferd. Eventually, we chose Heksebrann as our band name, because it fits quite well to our lyrical content and the atmosphere we want to create.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the album cover?

The idea was born when I was hiking in the woods near our town. There is a little old cabin deep inside the forest that looks like an old witch house. I thought about how cool it would be if we could rehearse in there. With this idea in mind we talked to the graphic artist Marco Thundergoat. With his help with developed the artwork even further and added a witch that is watching the cabin and the spirits that are called by the music. It’s good to have someone who can reproduce your visions and work so close together with you. He did an awesome job and we are really confident with the artwork of Spiritual Descending.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We already played a lot of cool Shows. One for example was in Poland on the Alter Piknik Festival. It is a DIY Festival with a nice spirit and the location is in an old factory. You should check it out! And of course, every show in our hometown is very special, because our Basta! is very small club, the bands are standing on the floor, eye-level with the crowd. There is no gap between them and no big stage. Shows like that can get very intense and completely weird.
On stage we will always give 100% no matter how many people are watching. We like loud heavy music and just want to play live.

8.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or have received any interest?

Yes, that is right. We were searching for a partner to release our album on vinyl, but as we did not find the right one, we decided to do it on our own. It is quiet some work, but you have the advantage that all is in your own hand, and you can manage things as you want. For the future we are looking forward to find a label that likes our music and is interested to work closely together with us. (The quality of the music is what matters the most, not how many records you could sell!)

9.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of underground metal?

The feedback from the people was really good and we are very pleased about that. You can often read that it is hard to fit our music in any genre. I think that is very positive, because that is what makes our music very unique besides our sound. We want to create something we like and people seem to do so, as well. This is the greatest reaction you can get.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

It is impossible to give you an exact answer to this question. We want to use more clean vocals but don’t lose the hard and forward going character of the music. We will also work with some more variating guitar sounds and maybe we can find other undiscovered and unique elements, that will enrich our music. In the end, we are influenced a lot by the world around us. Things we see, hear, feel and consume. So our music will always be a mirror of our current feelings and situation.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I think that we we process our influence more unconsciously. Perhaps every band that you listened to more extensively in the past will have a influence on your songwriting in some way. Our sources of inspiration vary a lot. But to name some great artist: High On Fire, Kvelertak, Solstafir,...
At the moment, Julius is listening a lot to Elder, Opeth and blues stuff. Mario is raving on Kvelertak’s last record Split or Idle Hands’ Mana and Marko’s current favourite is Hällas’ Conundrum.

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

Hiking is a hobby from me along the music. It’s sometimes necessary to be outside in nature and away from civilization. You can get rid of all the shit that bothers you in everyday life and recharge your batteries. Julius likes to travel, enjoys a good movie and likes to tinker with his equipment. Mario is into indoor plants, got more than 60 of them and hang out with buddies and drink a good beer.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

We are planning the release shows for the album in the end of the year and will also release our first music video. Stay tuned and whenever you have the chance to see us, come along and let us have a good time together! Thank you very much for the Interview.
