Italy's Barbarian have returned with a new recording which shows the music going for a mixture of black, death, thrash and speed metal and this is a review of their album "Reek Of God" which will be released in 2026 by Dying Victims Productions.
Spoken words start off the album before going into a heavier direction while the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style. Vocals are mostly black metal screams along with the music being very heavily rooted in the first wave era as well as the mixing in the heaviness of 90's death emtal.
Elements of thrash and speed metal are also utilized quite a bit throughout the album while also capturing t he raw energy pf punk. All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them along with the riffs also adding in a decent amount of dark sounding melodies.
The album also takes an old school style and makes it sound more modern along with the faster sections of the songs also adding in a decent amount of blast beats. Growls are also utilized at times as well as the recording also adding in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts, chants can also be heard briefly. One song is also a L7 cover and synths are also added towards the end. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover death, anti religion and metal themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Barbarian and if you are a fan of black, death, thrash, speed metal and punk, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Maxima Culpa" "Shit He Forgives' "Crossburn" and "Retrogarde metal". 8 out of 10.
